Yeah. I have a spreadsheet also. Mine includes the different currency options too to see which is cheaper on the day. Mind blown.
Im really enjoying free arx. I think its natural for most rational people to have a negative reaction, given the 3 digits of complexity in the pricing (they should have used the 4th as well...) its such a badly disguised effort to bamboozle you, they got caught red handed and of course set off the alarms. For me when it comes time to get something else I don't mind getting a good arx pack, but in the meantime been loving getting free cheap things off the store. Today I used my free arx to get a 1260 (!?!??!!) arx paint for the krait.. thanks. Would have paid for that in the past... so can't complain.
My spend this year has been nothing compared to last year.. and that nothing compared to the 2 years before. Partly because I got one of everything (when you have 4 limited edition anaconda skins eg you start to look foolish), but mostly because frontier aren't earning any goodwill. The fake stuff they're doing coming up with schoolyard excuses like they're listening to the community by delaying fleet carriers means they've got a lot of digging to do before it comes back.
Yeah. I have to admit I feel a bit foolish for being overly hostile towards the whole concept at the beginning - but weighing off pros and cons Arx does work for me now for the most part.
For players like us though who already bought a fair chunk of items in the past saturation has set in i.e. how many paints do you indeed need for the same ship (I do like a bit of variety though all the same!) - and similar to you, I could facepalm myself looking at how many packs I bought for some of my ships, but that's also due to the fact that some were only made available later, and if I had the choice of today I wouldn't have bought certain packs. Hindsight etc.
As for the goodwill towards Frontier - I'm in two minds how I feel about them right now... I think they really haven't covered themselves in glory this year, but looking at the beta forum and how much better organised everything is compared to the happy-go-lucky approach of the 3.3 beta, it's encouraging to see nevertheless. Difficult to judge what's going on behind doors, staff leaving/joining etc. so I don't want to rip into them too much now.
So I'm cautiously hopeful that this year was the low point and things will improve again over the next months. I'm still enjoying the game like I have over the past years (!), you can argue it's never been better despite the current issues (people get used to things, good or bad, pretty quickly) and will continue to spend money on items if I like them enough, and the price is right; and future DLC is 100% day 1 for me anyways regardless (unless they make a complete pig's ear of it of course

).
