Black Friday Sale - Now

I'm not spending a dime in the store anymore, with the new fss mechanic coming my time playing ED might as well be over so I don't see the purpose of buying anything now.

I've bought the expansion for Age of Wonders: Planetfall instead.
Not spending money on a game you no longer play is a wise decision,if only everyone else did that......

I didn't partake in it but there was an offer for a free Thargoid bobble head a month or two ago and when I checked to see how it looked, Frontier wanted one ARX for it. Though I had a 1,000 plus I failed to see why a FREE bobble head cost even one ARX.

You are mixing-up two different things. The free one was for a space-cabbage bobble-head as a reward for murdering xenos. The 1 ARX one was a retro-bobble-head of a scout.

Without a definitive answer as to how much, I just bought my first and probably last bunch of ARX. Paid almost 19.00 U.S. and received 25,000 in arx's. Reckon that should be enough for a half dozen of my ships. Now I just have to wait until the darn things become available to actually purchase.

Not bad. The same pack cost 28.45 dollarydoos here in Australia.

I ended up buying the ship kit for the Clipper. I didn’t realise there was a Clipper ship kit thankfully or I would have bought it already haha.

I also bought the Eden Covas, for something different. I mainly just used the default ones before, so it is refreshing to hear a different voice after so long. Actually I do have the Leo Covas for my mining T9, but I don’t do a lot of mining generally.

I only utilize the default Covas's, everyone I've listened to though sound to me like they all have a British or English overtone. Similar to the way I can speak like someone from the South here in the U.S. but the locals can tell it's a Northerner.

Well you are not quite correct - Eden for example is voiced by Idun Vik (a Norwegian actress) Alix is by Alix Martin (an American) Celeste by Sabrina Ruiz (who I think might be from the USA too - there are a lot of them - but there is an actress of that name in Europe and the accent sounds Parisienne to me in the HCS pack).

EDIT: HCS has advised that Sabrina Ruiz is "... French and has spent much of her time in Scandinavia".

I avoided them for a long time and apparently there are some new additions. After listening to the ones you mentioned. The only one of the three might be an actual born and raised English speaking America is Alix. The other two may reside here now, but haven't always.

What? What are you on about? Why would they live in the USA?

Even Alix Martin (the American) lives in Austria - Idun Vik lives in Bergen - Sabrina Ruiz is French (don't know where).

I reckon the Midnight Black paints will be at the top tier level @ 3250 Arx a pop. Wild guess though.

Well history says they’ll try more, they always priced the limited skins as one for the price of a pack in the past.

Still they don’t have packs anymore and they caved on... not modifying the prices for tactical white and graphite so who knows.

Probably depends if more people than a few on the forums actually hate arx. And how arx has been going otherwise (you can get free arx so it’s probably worse financially for frontier for some demographics).

Yeah just because existing players get an extreme shock from it and shut down.. doesn’t mean new players hate it. Look at some of the responses here.

Yes Arx is correct. No sale on Arx though, which would of been nice.
That would have made me spend money much more than the discount on paint jobs.

I guess Arx really doesn't have the intended effect on me. Some things look even more expensive than they actually are. 9k, reduced from 13k? And then I make 15 Arx in a game session? That seems deterring.
Same here.
It just doesn't do the trick for me.

Price goes from $4,99 to $3.66, yep, I see the discount. Price goes from 13k to 9k Arx... I still have to buy the same Arx pack as before. No discount there in my eyes. It just means I have more ingame currency left, but not in my wallet.

To be fair, I cooled down on Arx quite a bit, after hating it initially. My remaining bugbears with it are fixed Arx packs (i.e. I can't just buy the exact amount of Arx for whatever items I want to obtain) and the lack of paint packs as an option where I'd prefer to have the whole set at a "discount" (as in, the original price since most paints have been jacked up in comparison).

I even bought my first pack this week due to the ship kit sale (first time I spend serious time with the iCourier and I LOVE that ship, and the kit actually looks pretty good so I went for it at 33% off - the reduced Arx price meant I could opt for a lower tier Arx pack). I am however planning ahead more and don't engage in successive smaller impulse purchases (3 Euros here, 4 Euros there) as that was easier to do with the old system.

That means I have to use a spreadsheet to work out how much a given pack gives me in actual store items, and to minimise leftover balances. With all that considered, my actual spend on a monthly basis has gone way down now, and will remain there - Christmas seasonal offers notwithstanding as I missed out on a lot of those during prior years so will probably buy a mid tier pack again next month to buy a few chrome/gold/iridescent paints.

Yeah. I have a spreadsheet also. Mine includes the different currency options too to see which is cheaper on the day. Mind blown.

Im really enjoying free arx. I think its natural for most rational people to have a negative reaction, given the 3 digits of complexity in the pricing (they should have used the 4th as well...) its such a badly disguised effort to bamboozle you, they got caught red handed and of course set off the alarms. For me when it comes time to get something else I don't mind getting a good arx pack, but in the meantime been loving getting free cheap things off the store. Today I used my free arx to get a 1260 (!?!??!!) arx paint for the krait.. thanks. Would have paid for that in the past... so can't complain.

My spend this year has been nothing compared to last year.. and that nothing compared to the 2 years before. Partly because I got one of everything (when you have 4 limited edition anaconda skins eg you start to look foolish), but mostly because frontier aren't earning any goodwill. The fake stuff they're doing coming up with schoolyard excuses like they're listening to the community by delaying fleet carriers means they've got a lot of digging to do before it comes back.

Yeah. I have to admit I feel a bit foolish for being overly hostile towards the whole concept at the beginning - but weighing off pros and cons Arx does work for me now for the most part.

For players like us though who already bought a fair chunk of items in the past saturation has set in i.e. how many paints do you indeed need for the same ship (I do like a bit of variety though all the same!) - and similar to you, I could facepalm myself looking at how many packs I bought for some of my ships, but that's also due to the fact that some were only made available later, and if I had the choice of today I wouldn't have bought certain packs. Hindsight etc.

As for the goodwill towards Frontier - I'm in two minds how I feel about them right now... I think they really haven't covered themselves in glory this year, but looking at the beta forum and how much better organised everything is compared to the happy-go-lucky approach of the 3.3 beta, it's encouraging to see nevertheless. Difficult to judge what's going on behind doors, staff leaving/joining etc. so I don't want to rip into them too much now.

So I'm cautiously hopeful that this year was the low point and things will improve again over the next months. I'm still enjoying the game like I have over the past years (!), you can argue it's never been better despite the current issues (people get used to things, good or bad, pretty quickly) and will continue to spend money on items if I like them enough, and the price is right; and future DLC is 100% day 1 for me anyways regardless (unless they make a complete pig's ear of it of course:p).
