Star Citizen Discussion Thread v11

Yeah its more than enough to rent mining ships and most ship cost 1mil to 5mil. More you progress the faster money you make and tell me a game where you are supposed to get the best ships in a day. So they will 100% nerf them so you have to earn the ships like in every other game. And mostly you are also assuming that it will have unbelievable grind levels on release. You are probably right as well because most big ships are meant for multicrew and big organizations to shell in money together to procure a ship. Same way me and my friend put our ingame money together to get a caterpillar and then we put our money into buy cargo for it.
I remember when Elite did that. In the begging it was a pain to get anywhere, where 100k missions were seen as really good. Now you can get that Annie in a single day with barely any effort. People used to be like, "oh my God, been playing for 3 months, and finally have an anaconda!"

I watched that trailer and read the comments. This one interested me in particular. So the singleplayer campaign is now what Star Citizen is, and the online is just a bolted on extra? Huh. I always had the impression SQ42 was just there to fun the PU. Now it's backwards?

My very hazy recollection was that in the original pitch, players would be required to purchase SQ42 and play it through, to then "get the keys to the starter ship in the big ol' 'verse..."

That seems to have fallen away at an early stage and since then, the precise connection between the two has been subject to flux based on what CI need to obfuscate at any given moment in time.

The PU has always funded the development of Sqn 42...although back in the beginning, Sqn 42 was the original pitch for the crowdfunding effort. It pains me that buying ships for use in the PU now fund Chris Roberts' fantasy project, imagined by him alone as his magnum opus whilst the PU is being starved of resources and development as a result.

Chris Roberts needs to get Sqn 42 out of the door in order to satisfy the Calders investment of $46m...I've no doubt it was one of the conditions set by the Calders legal side, hence why Ci¬G are scuttling about throwing resources needed elsewhere at it.

However, all the dreaming by the faithful that Sqn 42 will bring in any sort of revenue is a no-go...90% of the copies of it that will ever be sold have already been paid for. It's not going to take the gaming world by storm as they imagine...it's a niche game heading for a niche market 4 years past it's supposed original 2015/2016 release date and going nowhere fast despite the money and resources Ci¬G are shovelling into it...

It's a fools errand being produced by a fool to satisfy his own hubris and narcissism.

It's a fools errand.
And the PU, the part that will likely be what draws in new customers and revenue is what's been held back for years as they focus all resources into the SP that few will pay for.

Yup..and everyone can see it bar the idiot in charge.
Hopefully it won't hurt them too bad, but man... Anyone who want's SQ42 already bought it, like you said. So come launch day, even if a million people play... no revenue. They'll make some money, because a few might read reviews and decide to buy it if it's good, and not a buggy mess. But most who want to play it already own it before it even exists.

Real curious question:

Why is there fog / dust in literally every shot? Space is the complete opposite of this, everything is sharp, because there is a lack of particles in the vacuum. Does SQ42 take place completely in a nebula?

Chris has never understood what space is or how it works. Or anything related to physics.

For reference, compare his ideas of free and non-conserved momentum, asteroid thickets, in-system nebulas, in-system quasars, gravity, space noise, planets, temperature, pressure, distance, dimensions, mass, atmospheres, aerodynamics… well. Everything, really.

In largely unrelated but still lolworthy far-from-news…
How big is the SC client again? I bet it's larger than 64kB… amateurs. 🤣

Rejoice, citizens! Squadron 42 was playable in 2016! (Ben said that even earlier)

How does that go along with how roadmaps went?!

Backers will tell you, in line with CIG's narrative, that its all ok, because despite CR saying in 2014 that its already great, and that he'd put it up against any other AAA game out there, they threw it all out and started again... as if this was something positive.

Greetings,

I must admit, this entire story was never on my radar until this morning, when I coincidently stumbled across an SC video by Obsidian Ant and found it interesting enough to look deeper, tried to find more informations and slowly fragments of a picture came together. There will be many people reading/writing here that know much more about SC than I do.

When I read some background stories, Sandi Gardiner, ex-employees, actors etc. about the history of SC one particular thought started to come up over and over again.

When I came to EDH first, I was posting something about people purchasing virtual paint jobs and cosmetic kits for real money, and that I would find that quite unbelievable, and regardless how much I enjoyed Elite to date, I still do find that a very strange aspect indeed.

Then I learned that Roberts sells virtual ships for real money, up to 27,000 real US dollar ....gasping...Say what?... for a bundle of virtual ships and kits and had fundraised something in the region of a quarter billion USD to date. By spending thousand bucks, you earn the title iof a high admiral and concierge, if I got that right. Oooh, really now?

The question that keeps coming up in my mind is not meant to offend anyone here who might have backed this development or who finds nothing strange about it at all, it is just a genuine thought that came up while reading about this.

I seriously wonder whether Scientology is in any way involved, Roberts or other driving forces behind SC. While I think this to be a fascinating story indeed, worthy of an evening filling film, at the same time it most certainly is in the Top 3 of the utmost craziest Internet related stories in my little world. Wow!

That being said, stunning graphics from what I saw, but well, that's getting better and better anyways.

Get outta here with that weak $27k nonsense.

$35k is where it is at!

I don't think so. However, CIG might have Scientology's leadership slapping their foreheads saying "Why didn't we think of that!?"

Funny though. Both CR and Scientology made very bad sci-fi films. I mean, its a toss up as to which is the worst film, Battlefield Earth or Wing Commander.

You need to get out more...seriously.

Scientology was created by L. Ron Hubbard, a hack science fiction writer. Who incidentally seems to have made a habit of rewriting his personal history. But no, you don't need to invent conspiracy theories to explain Star Citizen. It all makes sense without the need for them, as long as you understand that 'sense' isn't what is driving it.

The Elite threads for Star Citizen are a little on the long side, but there are some crackers of stories in there

The open letter Chris Roberts sent to Kotaku
The vilification of Derek Smart
Trying to keep the fact that Chris Roberts and Sandi Gardener are married hidden from the backers
The illegal use of copyright images
Streetroller's lawsuit against them and the attraction that caused of an attorney general to their TOS
Trying to pass off Citizencon demos as playable

I used to come to this thread to have a laugh at the latest thing Chris Roberts and Sandi Gardiner have been up to. I'm amazed it's still going, and despite them, it's improving. I'm sure that's more down to the talented people who work for them
