Star Citizen Discussion Thread v11

BTW, did Sandi or Erin appear in any recent (post-Citcon) vid? Didn't watch the last pillar talk but looked like Erin wasn't part of the party...

Real curious question:

Why is there fog / dust in literally every shot? Space is the complete opposite of this, everything is sharp, because there is a lack of particles in the vacuum. Does SQ42 take place completely in a nebula?

Pet peeve alert! Nebulas are actually not foggy/dusty at all. They only look so because they stretch over vast distances and we observe the effect they have on light over that distance. Space ''inside'' a nebula is more empty than our artificial vacuums. :p

As for SC, well, it's not news that they are very very into visuals. So it's likely foggy/dusty because they're happy with the dramatic look it gives. Same goes for the planet with massive floating rocks so low in the sky: makes no sense from a gravitational point of view, but looks cool so it's there.

The Elite threads for Star Citizen are a little on the long side, but there are some crackers of stories in there

Speaking of which, everything related to these was silently buried, was it ? Never seen any other mention of Space Hello Kitty...
Oh and in that list i'd add selling virtual land claims, that are triple virtual as they are in a game, in places that dont exist, using a mechanics that doesnt exist either. Curious to see if/when these will resurface, if at all...

(...)I'm amazed it's still going, and despite them, it's improving. I'm sure that's more down to the talented people who work for them
Yeah they do have a strong art department.

Neither did, i suppose Erin is geographically away (aint he located in UK ?) but for Sandi there's something else at play i guess...

Look, if they want to invoke the Rule of Cool for having cool visuals, let them. This project has far worse issues than having slightly unrealistic visuals (accounting for having everything scaled down 1/6th) - TBH in space visuals in the PU so far are of the more hardcore realistic side of things compared to almost all space games... No nebula in the PU though. If you want "pet peeves" there's sound in space (with echo !), speed limits, no gravity per se, hilariously bouncy physics, infinite instant accelerations (or said otherwise, no 2nd order movement), no atmo drag or lift, etc.

And the PU, the part that will likely be what draws in new customers and revenue is what's been held back for years as they focus all resources into the SP that few will pay for.

so this is the new narrative.
I don't think so, PU is late for the same rasons SQ42 is.

I certainly wouldn't cast the first stone at Star Citizen for their making their space sim better looking and easier to play. That would be because although there's nothing to stop the stone, eventually it would stop in mid-space to make it easier to scoop up <grin>

Get outta here with that weak $27k nonsense.

$35k is where it is at!

But its ok, because the backers asked CIG to do it! Its not CIG being bad, backers asked to be bent over and taken roughly.

a bit strange said to one that has never heard of SC untill this morning by one that has lost hundreds of hours and money on a non-game.

Yes, I never heard about that story before, and yes, the thought of a marketing driven scheme to siphon cash from the gullible and vulnerable came to my mind when I read the forbes article from May 2019 that Obsidian Ant referred to, leading to a quick thought (not conclusion) about possible scientology involvement or Chris Roberts or peers being members perhaps. I would not have been astonished, but apparently it is not related, and it is not a scam, per definitionem that is, I understand that.

Now I am going to look for that Wing Commander Movie, a game I played for hours and days, the movie too escaped my radar, so perhaps he is right and I need to get out more. ;).

LOL.... well I want to see how bad it is and because I have a choice of watching the movie or walking in the rain now trying to reduce the festive calorie intake.... I prefer to test the couch. Hmmm see? Not getting out... again! :)

Just saw that J. Prochnow acts in it, DAS BOOT being the only film I remember him from. The soundtrack by David Arnolds though is promising, he wrote the music to the original Stargate which I find stunning.... signing off.... lights out ...screen rolls down.... shhhh :)

Chris has never understood what space is or how it works. Or anything related to physics.

For reference, compare his ideas of free and non-conserved momentum, asteroid thickets, in-system nebulas, in-system quasars, gravity, space noise, planets, temperature, pressure, distance, dimensions, mass, atmospheres, aerodynamics… well. Everything, really.

In largely unrelated but still lolworthy far-from-news…
How big is the SC client again? I bet it's larger than 64kB… amateurs. 🤣

^^
Wrong. See BlinkyATX's coverage of CR's true vision of Newtonian physics applied in the vacuum of space. Where you can push a flaming pile of space ship wreckage off the landing deck. Of a space aircraft carrier. In the vacuum of space. With a space bulldozer. Enlightenment begins at 8:40 with Nobel Prize achievement at 9:40 o_O:alien::coffee:

It's... really, really bad. And then it manages to get worse with the space tractor... 🤦‍♂️

On a side note Fishy.... :) .... If you ever find yourself in Donegal, go to Falcarragh, Mainstreet, right hand side half way into it, house on the corner, can't miss it, called SOMETHING FISHY.... best burger and fries you will ever have! :)

Haven't "played" for a while (not that there was ever much to actually play), and having just built a new system I thought I'd install 3.8 and give it a spin.

Got a disconnect within 30 seconds.

Second time was better stability-wise, but geez - it's still awful. Control system is terrible (really? 'F' key to interact, and then left mouse click? For everything? And people criticise X4?), graphics just annoying (why is there a big shiny background in the middle of what they are still calling the 'star map' so you can't actually see it?) and not particularly impressive to be honest. The planets look awful from a distance, and then you land on them, and they are worse.

And there's still basically nothing to do... after nearly six years.

What are they spending all that money on?

Haha, I need to spend a weekend out there now!
