ANNOUNCEMENT Community Update - January 3306

I like the 'great!' and 'excellent!' responses, but unless I miss something the only actual announcement is 1) no II/CG for months at least, and 2) no info about the DLC for at least six months.

That isn't 'great' or 'excellent', it is an expected disappointment. It is sugarcoated by repeating stuff announced earlier ("we'll fix bugs!") but that doesnt make it any better.

I've pretty much accepted the fact that our current version of ED is now well and truly into "maintenance mode." I am happy for the patching process (long overdue), but the inability of Frontier to walk and chew gum at the same time - i.e., patch the game while also adding a modicum of new content to keep the playerbase engaged - is starting to get annoying. Hello Games, with a team much the same size as the B Team currently working on this version of ED, manages to regularly roll out meaty new content updates for No Man's Sky while also bug fixing their game.

I have to confess that my interest in ED is starting to wan these last few months as the lack of fresh content - now even minor stuff like CGs! - makes the game feel more and more like an abandoned title. I hope the Jan 14th bug-fixing patch is impressive because if it is just a minor list akin to what was in the beta, well, that will just about kill all enthusiasm for the game for me.

They did have those resources - sadly the community - led by Mr Obsidian & Yamiks - decided those resources should be reallocated. Maybe you could ask them to amend their letter?
Won't we all be laughing at this when an entirely new codebase is rolled out to all players along with the paid content at the end of 2020?

Well, it's not entirely unlikely.

Still, it's not fair just to blame our beloved Content Creators. My own suspicion is that after the September mess, resources would have had to be reallocated to bug-fixing anyway. All the open letter did was give Frontier cover for something they'd have had to do regardless if the game was to limp along until the New Era. I'm not saying the betas aren't useful, but I suspect there's also an element of window-dressing about them. The first was certainly as short as a beta usefully could be.

Greetings Commanders,

Happy New Year!

As we enter 3306, we would like to tell you about the next update coming to Elite Dangerous!

Thanks to all the commanders who joined in the beta back in November, we're happy to announce that the January Update will be launching on the 14 January! As we mentioned back in October, the first half of this year's updates will be focused almost exclusively on Fleet Carriers and fixing as many high priority bugs and issues as possible, ensuring that the game runs as smooth as a freshly-purchased Cobra MkIII. To be clear, this means that Interstellar Initiatives/Community Goals will be on hold while we focus on the subsequent series of updates and betas that will be coming over the following months.

Much like the January Update, these updates will be accompanied by an open beta, allowing commanders to jump in and see the content before it's released, as well as help us identify any major issues or bugs. We'll be providing more details about all of these updates in the near future, so keep an eye on all of our usual channels.

The team are hard at work on the next major milestone coming to Elite Dangerous at the latter end of this year and, as also mentioned in the previous post, we'll be ready to start revealing more about this after the Fleet Carriers update. We know you're keen to hear more, and we're excited to be able to show you what's to come!
I just want to say thank you for taking the time to do it right instead of pumping out half finished content like the majority of game companies. You guys do a phenomenal job at FDev. Keep up the awesome work!

  • 2 x fleet carriers reprioritization
  • icy planet overhaul reprioritized (not a single word from FDev about it since)
  • still not a single use of the "Rumored" in the CODEX
  • no update about Powerplay
  • Galnet death
  • no more CGs and IIs for the next half of the year
  • Thargoids story on hold for a few months It looks like they are back now ^^ (01-09-20)

... and on top of that we still don't have a single clue what is coming and what will exactly do the Fleet Carriers...

How to kill hype in the bud.

Make Elite Dangerous great again FDev - new era better be good ;)

Honestly, it is kinda a silver-lining kinda thing. I have no clue if the next DLC will actually be any good, but the resources they spend on it and the complete and utter lack of interest in keeping the current player base engaged suggest they think they can rely on whatever it is they are working on to get the fire burning again on its own merrit.

We'll see.

Hopefully the cautious approach (in both time-delay since beta and in reducing dev time for CGs) results in a less troublesome update & quicker fixes to emergent problems than we've seen for some time.
Hope it plays out this way :) good luck & break a leg Fdev (but not the BGS please)

Happy New Year !!
I just hope that the game with the upcoming updates continues to improve. As well as I hope that with, the one mentioned by you, the DLC that comes later this year is really a new ERA in Elite Dangerous. I trust that from Frontier you know what you are doing and that really what you mention is really going to be a turning point in this great game.
Greets and keep going.

your suspicion is quite correct. they could have gotten away with it a bit longer but the september fiasco was probably too big to ignore, must have had an effect inside the company as well.

and, yeah, beta won't do zilch but appease the masses. let's just hope they have truly 'rationalised the codebase'.
