ANNOUNCEMENT Community Update - January 3306

I guess that illustrates perfectly the difference between optimist and pessimist.
I'm one of the 'odd' people who enjoy playing ED as it is today, not lamenting on what it should, or could, have been. I have a list of things 'to do' that gets more added than removed.

You can't be optimistic or pessimistic about existing content as it already exists. However, when existing content is suspended like Community Goals, then something is amiss.

It’s not even maintenance as existing features are being suspended.

I'm not going to defend or debate FDev's stance. Frontier staff are active in this thread, they can nip this in the bud themselves if they choose to by managing customer expectations. Mine are pretty low already & I'm only really interested in not losing existing features & finding out whatever the eventual premium DLCs are going to be.

Because they are REMOVING content from the game - Community Goals and Interstellar Initiatives. This is the exact opposite direction of where the game should be going.

Removing CG's and II's, and likely making the FSS less accurate regarding surface POI's as well. This minor bug fix patch has a lot of downsides to it, doesn't it?

I wouldn't mind if they said it was only a temporary measure while they work on the bug fixes. However, it's the lack of certainty about them coming back that has me worried. Wonder if they felt that after all the development effort in creating II's just got them unappreciated salt so they cut them down.

I enjoyed the II's (especially the thargoid one) but you did feel that the if you had anything positive to say, you were shouted down on the forums.

It only looks like it's the opposite direction because you are taking a look at a bad time.

Frontier are just crouching at the moment to be able to jump even higher. 🤾‍♂️

Personally I'm not bothered by the FSS being less accurate (but I sympathize with those who are), but if they are using the timed tabbed system that was seen in the beta, then that's a serious downgrade / screwup.

We don't know where the game is going, so we don't know what the right directions is either. I take they are in the process of adding stuff, but I guess they are gonna tell us soon...?

As it happens, I suspect that Frontier wouldn't want to remove content from the existing game unless there is a very pressing reason. My speculation is that either Fleet Carriers or 2020 Vision are behind schedule and require extra assistance which can only come from the Elite Dangerous 'Classic' team.

Pure speculation though.

Short of shutting down the game temporarily, I don't think there's anything else Frontier could remove support from. Oh, the shop I suppose, but I expect Frontier will think that's worth supporting.

It's quite instructive when updates start removing features rather than adding them.
I guess this is what it is like to be a Mac owner?

Heat death is more accurate. With no onward lore ED is drifting with all the Tier 1 guys kicking back and having a nice cup of tea.

Either New Era puts the jump leads on Elites nipples and shocks it back to life, or it will put the leads on lower, more tender areas and apply a fatal voltage....

The last GalNet article not related to a CG or II was https://community.elitedangerous.com/galnet/uid/5cc966bd92262d34e3723d66 (Distant Worlds Expedition ends, from May)

Before the DW2 ones, I think the ones around the Gnosis misjump.

Before that I think the announcement of additional shipyards for the Colonia region.

Without IIs or CGs, I wonder what in-game events Galnet will have to report on? One article every six months or so, plus the (not particularly useful) Powerplay summary and the slowly decreasing list of station repair shopping lists, doesn't sound good.

In fairness my perspective on this is that the game is actually in a pretty good position for both features and lack of really serious bugs at the moment (especially with the fix list from Beta + a bit more) ... and what it needs more of is not "more features" but actually making fuller use of the existing features, as the IIs (especially the Enclave) did. But most people seem to want one of features/polish/bugfixes ahead of that, in terms of what they actually request. And of course 'new features' is the only one which makes real-world money. It's understandable that it's not a focus...

... but if you think about what people talk about from the previous years of the game, it's things like the Enclave, the Gnosis misjump, Distant Worlds (both of them), the early stages of the Thargoid invasion before they got too predictable and mechanistic, the Colonia Expansion Initiative, the Dangerous Games, the Salome storyline, going right back to the Lugh War. Features get added, consumed and then taken for granted ... events get remembered and talked about for years afterwards. Especially important in the time of

None of those events involved very much that hadn't been done before in terms of game mechanics - but they combined existing ones, used them in new contexts, put a bit of a story behind them, reasons to get involved, and so on.

Hopefully once 4.0 is out we can get back to that sort of thing.

“....we will be clarifying this in the patch notes Soon(TM)”

So.....typical FDev announcement of an announcement with absolutely no information.

Better than nothing I suppose.
