Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

  1. Cannons: I'm curreently tooled up with MC's but how do regular cannons fair? And PA's? I tried frags but they didn't feel good to me.
  2. Fixed weapons like rail guns. Now, I'm prettyt bad at lining up shots so I think these may be a bit beyond me. Are they worth persevering with? Or is worth learning the shudder FAoff thing first?
  3. Bi-weave shields: I currently have, on my 'Vette, G5 reinforced 7A's, fast charge and five shield boosters with various effects. I know bi-weave will recharge faster (my current shielding takes an age) but, in reality, how do bi-weaves fair?
  4. Lastly, missiles, torperdoes and mines. I can't (yet) see a situation that warrents these, especially given where I'll be fighting. Does anyone use these to god effect? This is based on just the regualarly available ones - those "pack hound" things I keep hearing about, well, I'll probably never get those and what they do is beyond my current understanding.
And, very lastly - honest! - apologies for all the questions!

1. Cannons are the poor man's PAs, by "poor man" I mean if heat or power are constraining your build. They offer a "similar" punch, similar aiming style, a bit more room on ammo(not much) but i think they're a solid alternative.

2. Love rail guns, but they really standout if you get the plasma slug experimental. which removes the ammo component. to your question about fa off, i think it is just a skill that can enhance really any ships capabilities not limited to single weapons. I FA off for just a moment at a time to whip a ship around and flip it back on the moment I begin firing.

3. I use bi weaves for ships that have terrible max shield size, the reboot one them can really save your arx.

4. I'm a fan of missiles, if you've got an agile ship the dumb missiles are great at massive dmg if you can stay on your target. the smart or tracking missiles work on slower ships when your target tries to run to recharge their shield. i've downed so many cobras trying to escape using smart missiles. but all and all like the100thmonkey said
Missiles are OK. All the others are edge case engineering weapons, imo.

I too have yet to learn FA off, but use fixed nevertheless to some extend successfully. Guess you could just try it on a less expensive and more agile build.

Packhounds G5 engineered with Penetrator Munitions experimental are good to take out specific modules, such as power plant, which is great fun. The added steop to targethard points or a module is well worth it. Strip shields first, then send packhounds in quick succession.

Bi's are a must have for combat zones in my opinion, the fast charge recycle rate, combined with thermal, and then added resistance augmented boosters are very strong!

Yeah, I haven't done Colonia either but I do have Nemo. Missing Bris and Lori Jameson. And with the latter, there's very little to recommend her either as her stuff is mostly covered by other folk. Mostly.

Which has all got me thinking about experimenting with other weaponry instead of grinding away to get "dangerous". But perhaps I'll do that anyway then move on to another pursuit :D

Questions to fighting folk though - and these are based on PvE in a hazres (or CZ) situation:
  1. Cannons: I'm curreently tooled up with MC's but how do regular cannons fair? And PA's? I tried frags but they didn't feel good to me.

IM(C/H)O
  1. Cannons are great when they hit but being lower velocity and firing rate getting hits is less certain, PA only come in fixed mount
  2. Fixed mount weapons belong back in the early twentieth century.
  3. They aren’t as strong as standard but the do recover quicker especially with the fast charge effect, recovery time can be even faster with fewer shield boosters. It depends on ship, fighting style and how damage averse you are which is better for you.
  4. They are a bit niche currently, mines were great until NPCs learned to dodge especially for traders, torpedoes should be effective if they hit but are vulnerable to point defence and there are so few reloads, speaker seeker missiles have decent range for sniping but suffer from point defence and work best when there are no shields they can be useful for stealing kills, dumbfire missiles are good as a fireworks display and allegedly against ground targets.
Edited to fix the combination of my bad spooling and the chuckers lack of context checking.

1. Tried them on some smaller ships. DPS is similar to MCs, but their low projectile speed makes them a short range weapon - and for that, I prefer my Pacifiers :devilish:. The force shell special effect is nice, though - but an absolute niche application. I haven't found a realistic scenario for that yet, but I'm not a pew expert, either.
2. Always fixed, except on large ships. I can't get the hang of rails either, but plasmas are ok for me. But then again, even a size 4 plasma (overcharged and everything) does less damage for more power compared to my rapid fire screening shell Pacs. And, occasionally having been on the reciving end, they're easy to evade.
3. I usually use bi-weaves when I don't think about it. Admittedly, though - after slapping on four boosters and three Guardianb reinforcements, the difference in recharge speed becomes somewhat academic. Yes, it's 6 vs. 14 minutes - but seriously, are you going to hang around in a hot zone for 6 minutes, waiting for oyur shields to recharge? On the other hand, it's also 2300 vs. 2700 points of thermal resistance, so also nothing to lose sleep about.
4. Missiles - I don't use them. Torpedoes - I carry them on my utility Krait in the two M HPs, but rarely use them as the ammo is rather expensive. Mines - there are a few CMDRs (can't name the one I know here) who have perfected the art of dive-bombing mines from an iCourier. Again a very niche application (and mostrly a specialist combat wing role), but can be devastatingly effective if it's done right.

Thanks for the tips all! Apprciated!

I realised I was running a little low on small calibre munition rearm mats so I thought I'd restock.

On my way, I met my favourite Simon Pegg character:

In the same SC to the planet I wanted, I met this chap - what is HE doing all the way out here? Perhaps he'd just finished mapping an ELW for his next docco:

I reached my destination and deployed the SRV. Merrily hunted down every piceous cobble I could handle and then... well, all I can see is that curiosity got the better of me. "I wonder what will happen when I run over this?"

Somehow my T9 has acquired a bounty from the local Ahats, and the crew refuse to fly in it, making a very good case,so i stripped and sold it on (25%,shocking.)Never really used it and it's so slow on the turn, needs a real hexpert to fly thet pig,or at least someone who is prepared to put in the hours on it,but it's not for me.

Got me a new joystick, a VKB Gladiator, to replace my Logitech 3D Pro. The Logitech is an OK stick (especially for the price), but it's getting pretty loose with quite a bit of play in it, and I had a bit of money coming in from my online music show, so I decided to replace it. I almost bought another T16000 but decided to give this a try instead. I paid $95 for this new one, so it's not terribly expensive.

First impressions are good. It has a pretty light touch, and seems very smooth. The yaw twist is a bit stiff but it's new. It has enough buttons on the base for me, and I like the positioning of things. I have not opened it up, but it certainly seems solidly built. I like that there are not too many buttons on the stick itself. On the Logitech I disabled some because I couldn't avoid accidentally pressing them!

No drivers were needed. I just plugged it in and there it was.

Of course ED did not automatically transfer my old bindings, so I had to re-do them all. I think I have them set, but there's a few things I might change as I get used to the new layout.

I need to get used to the softer springs, because I keep over controlling! But it feels really smooth. Hopefully it will last a long time.

Here's a pic:

I made my way to Cubeo last night, scanning new (to me) systems along the way to get the exploration credits. 6 jumps in my Corvette from New Belgrade station to the Cubeo system. After arriving is system I scanned the nav beacon and hit an HGE to stock up on some Imp Shielding. Then I made my way to weaver station and turned in my exploration data and donated some credits to build some reputation and gain rank percentage. Then I took a few data courier missions. One of my destinations was 143K LS from the arrival star, but it turned out to be worthwhile because they had a good price for gold, so I filled up my hold and then completed my final data delivery mission and headed back to Cubeo.
After arriving in the system I was promptly pulled over by the cops (first time that happened to me). It was on iCourier that took a sniff at me and sent me on my way. So I jumped back into SC where a pirate decided he wanted my gold. Big mistake on his part. I submitted to the interdiction to what turned out to be an Anaconda. I turned around to face him and unleashed the fury on him. His shields were gone in 5 seconds, and it took another 30 seconds to destroy him, because he tried to run away from me and got outside the range of all but one of my MC's (I have one engineered for long range), but then I just started firing missile at him while my lasers were melting his hull, and then he went pop and I collected some nice mats and 115K bounty after making almost 12K/ton when I sold my gold.

Have a link please? :) Always interested in music.

Used to make music myself a wee bit ( the pic is a shot from the beach where I used to live in Ireland at that time):

Looks a sturdy JS, hopefully at this pricetag, how do you feel about throttling precision? What have you assigned on the buttons?
There's no link, it's a live show and you have to show up in Second Life when it's happening :p I'm just a cover artist, no original music these days, but I have fun and there's always a little crowd.

Your Soundcloud stuff sounds great!

As for the throttle on the Gladiator, I'm not using it, so I can't tell you much about it.

Anyway, decided to head out to the Witchhead Sector and snoop around. I haven't been out there yet. I figured I'd hit up the Engineer out there and then poke around the area.

Checking the requirements for the Engineer, I found myself short a few Sensor Fragments, so I had to go acquire a few more. I haven't been out to the old Thargoid crash since way before the live Thargoids appeared. I remember people trying to put the pieces of the crash together, to figure out what the Thargoid would look like. It was an interesting time in ED.

Anyway, I got the fragments and headed off to see Chloe Sedisi. For an Engineer, she has quite a big setup. It's like an entire city down there.

On the way to my destination, wouldn't you know it, I got stopped and scanned by a Thargoid. I was pretty sure it wouldn't attack me, and fortunately it did not. I would be defenseless if it did, in the DBX.

Yeah, so now I'm out in Witchhead. Not sure what I'm gonna do out here yet. I landed in some station that's under repair. Hope it's still there tomorrow.

Last night I bought and engineered a speedy little Eagle.

All fixed weapons (1railgun, 2 pulse lasers), flight assist off, HIRES. Pew! Pew pew!

This is the final build. I have all the core modules engineered, but I want to replace my 3A thrusters with 3A performance-enhanced thrusters DDG5DD, and I still have to visit all the respective engineers for the experimentals.

To add to some of Mr To'f questions, and may set a compromise on weapons.
I recently built a new phantom based on all gimballed weapons, so only fire forward mode available. following Mr 100thmonkeys suggestion.
Made the shipped shields and hulls as close to my phantom Denis for comparisons. I promptly named the ship 'Gimbbly'. A good name is important right?
Added a 2 size frag cannon 2 size pulse laser and 3 size beams on the top. Works well enough in high and Haz res sites.
Also quite good in combat high and medium intensity. I was able to take down a T10 and even a corvette.
The later being a war corespondent. Did not feel good about it! but, they did not ask before taking my picture for their propaganda.
And you know how us elite wan nabe's are about privacy.

The cons were that fire forward meant more time time to get on target. Being a mouse and keyboard cmdr means harder to get on target quickly.
So, the compromise was to keep the turreted beams on top. fitted two gimballed pulse lasers for forward fire.
One set to rapid fire with scramble spectrum. The second overcharged with multi servos. 'Denis' is now called 'Gimbbly Denis'
All is working well and reasonable time to defeat the opponent is good.

I am still finding Elite dangerous a very contrarian game. I am often find that only bigger heavy ships are my targets.
Trying to attack and destroy lesser sized ships often take longer, as they have multiple shield rebuilds before defeat.
learning the Greek alphabet back wards is also problematic, often attacking Spec ops delta results in the rest of the alphabet joining in on me.
I quickly learnt that delta is the lower rank, I was going for the gamma first. Not that much support from the green npc's when having ago at spec ops.

Finding the phantom a good mid size combat ship. I will be trying to get all the rest of my combat ranking with this ship. plus or minus some extra engineering...
