Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

Thank you both.

And lol I feel I ought to point out at this juncture that I am not some raving intergalactic xenophobe. I was asking purely as I have gone engineering crazy this week, unlocking another six and getting them up to five star, so I feel the need to start the long trek to unlock Palin and the other distant ones (one needs an invitation from the Colonia Council, IIRC). Given that will be my longest-ever journey and I will take my time over it, I wondered if I might encounter some Thargoids at some point. And, should they attack me, would there be any merit in my returning fire, or should I just scoot out of there. I certainly won't fire the first shot - I'm much more Fox Mulder than Col Kilgore!

Ah, no. Very easy to run away from.

Given that Colonia is a 22k ly trip (or thereabout) I recommend following me out to Beta Site in the Jellyfish Nebula - assuming Trevithick dock in whichever LHS it is as 'home', it is 5077ly trip out (and same back, unless you suicide...), almost as if Beta Site was there just for those who want to unlock Palin (and his new understudy) and then suicidewinder back to the bubble.

And you can always hoon out a little further, if you aren't sure where 'home' is, before heading back (by whichever route).

It'll also prepare you for the Colonia slog - jumping all the way to Jellyfish and then back to the Bubble is about halfway to Colonia...

And as I just discovered, there's plenty of undiscovered and/or unmapped systems out that way.

Safe travels!

Edit: Oh, and you can do it very handily in a cheap little (un-engineered!) Hauler with a 30 ly jump range

That's a kind thought and a good clarification right there, thank you very much. As I imagine that the Jellyfish Nebula will be too far for the nav computer, I'll look up how to plot a route and make my way out. The ever-lovely Mrs Templar is away in the US all next week (she has a proper job, unlike her self-employed husband), so I'm up for a meaty ED project to get my teeth into. The Beta Site it is, then. Will take the Anaconda, then most likely regret it, but it's flexible enough to use for most things if I decide to stay out that way. Can always buy something smaller when I'm there (I guess!).

Thank you for the thought.

Cooking Friday :) Lentils stew.

17 Liter stainless steel pot.
7 Kg beef with bones, different superb cuts.
1Kg bacon cubes
8 Liter water, black Malabar pepper, white Kampot pepper, pimento, cloves in a tea egg, laurel leaves.
Two large onions, slize in half, on medium heat in a stainless steel pan without oil until brown to black. Add bacon and brown, add little water and render.
Whack it all into pot
Start from cold, bruing to cook, 3 hours simmer on low.
When meat tender and bones cooked out, slize and dize meat, put aside.

Add 2.5 kg brown lentils to broth, simmer 30 minutes

Approx. 10 Kg (before peeling)Carrots, parsley root, celery, leak, potato all cut to small cubes, - Yes, its a grind!!! LOL - three tins Pomodorino D'oro tomatoes, add and simmer another 40 minutes.

Add high quality apple vinegar, Dijon mustard, freshly chooped parsley, marjoram, salt, pepper & a little sugar to taste.

Serve in a deep large bowl with a large Wiener sausage, a cold Pilsner Urquell compliments it well. "Sticks to the ribs" food in cold and wet weather.
Sucks thotfully on a Psylent Booster Bean.(They're Grrrrrreat!)

I've made it out there four times so far - twice in a Cobra III with c32ly range, once in a 29.some ly hauler, and just now in the 30.4 ly Keelback. Never have I worried overly about the route - all three ships made it without jumponium/neutron boosting.

Just cruised out o the bubble down to the California nebula, and sort of winged it in the general direction after that 🤪

If you just scoop, honk, jump, you can do it in a couple or three hours (one way, at least). if you stop to take in the sights, geo sites and map a few things, it can take as long as you like :D

Beta Site is an asteroid station, so has large pads/hangars, but has no shipyard/outfitting, so you've only got what you take with you way out there!

Of course, if you've come prepared for a long expedition, you can always go a couple of thousand ly further, to Station X, in the Crab Nebula. I think my Keelback gonna try that next. Well, after I try again to reach HIP whereveritis with all the crystal mat deposits again first!

Thank you for the thought.

Hey, no worries CMDR, always happy to help a fellow CMDR out in the best damned thread on the forums

Decided that the MkII was ready for take off, and plotted a route from the flaming thargoid system inside the Witch Head nebula towards Colonia. Jumped and woUow, was interdicted by a thargoid. Those things are beautiful, but very hard to photograph when your ship has gone BSOD. After a reboot I noticed all my fuel was gone and I was back at the system where I started. Tried to scoop the star, but it was non-scoopable, so I had to make it make to the station Codger showed, the one very close to the star.

(Have to get better at taking pictures of those)

Next I decided to get away from all then misery, and see how fast I could make the Krait go. The PP is running rather hot, considering its G5 low emis engineering, but the heat builds up slowly it seems. I always forget to honk, so I tried to find the optimal routine for travelling. So far it looks like:

Generally just leave the throttle at max.
Once in the system, rotate to a comfortable scoop angle, taking into account where the next star is. I prefer the star I scoop above the canopy.
Scoop away, trying to get to as close to death as possible.
Once you have the target star visible, and the FSD has cooled down, while still scooping, press the FSD button.
Now things start heating up, so to distract your amygdala, start honking the system.
After the sound of the horn, don't look at the temp yet. Instead align the target.
Once the countdown starts, you can look at the temp, if you can find it in all the smoke.

This way I have been able to complete a full jump cycle (incl scooping and honking) in 41 seconds. Being a little rusty, and experimenting with the timing, 4,410 lys in an hour flat means an average traveling speed of 4,410 ly/h. Not as fast as an origami Conda, but definitely useable. Now I just need to find out how to squeeze in the FSS, that the profanity filter won't let me misspell :)

That's brilliant, thank you so much. The Anaconda jumps around 40ly, has a good fuel scoop, twin SRVs and a fighter bay, so should have all I need. It'll double as an exploration trip and top up my mats if I find some landable planets. I'm at 30% Pioneer so be good to boost my numbers a little.

Dang it, I'll leave this evening, have a couple of hours between 1800-2000. Try to get around half way there. Thank you ever so much, both for the advice and the ispiration.

You're welcome CMDR!

I should add, though it is not listed on the link I provided, Beta Site does have a Cartography contact, so you can sell your data/secure your discoveries. Made 20 million when the Keelback docked up last night. It's a fairly lousy hourly rate, to be sure, but time enjoyably spent has a value all its own

May I suggest the AFMU module for long distance travel? Can make all the difference and the Conda has plenty of slots to accomodate.

That's a great shout, thank you, I'll swing by and fit one before departure. 40 minutes until I leave, I feel like I'm packing for a family holiday. Have never used an AFMU before, never even bought one, this is a voyage of discovery on several levels.

Thank you.

Oh crap oh crap oh crap - I hope this catches you before you set off!

It'll also prepare you for the Colonia slog - jumping all the way to Jellyfish and then back to the Bubble is about halfway to Colonia...

Because when I said that (above), what I was getting at was that its about the same as getting halfway to Colonia - it (Jellyfish Nebula) is actually in the complete opposite direction to Colonia, though!

I mean, you'd see that when you open the galactic map and start looking for routes, but, y'know, for the avoidance of doubt/confusion - going out to Jellyfish sets you up to unlock Palin (and whats her name, the new one in Witch Head Nebula), return to the bubble to rank up with them, then head out to Colonia with some long distance travel under your belt, so you have some idea what you'll be dealing with on the 22k ly romp (or should that be yomp?1?) out to Colonia!

Apologies if this poor wording on my part has misled you in any way!

If you have a slot available, the AFMU is for free with regards to mass and it can be turned off to save energy, but I haven't used it. It might come in handy if you choose to go up and take the neutron highway, but in most cases it's just a nice to have you rarely use. Note that I've been involved in more car accidents than I can remember, and that I fly less safe than I drive.

lol don’t worry, it was entirely clear, I got what you meant!
I have set off, fitted a 4D AFMU just in case - thanks, @MaxG10 - as I figured I could lose some cargo capacity. Still picking 256T. Reckons it’s 154 jumps. Have made the first 11.
Thank you for your help, Commanders.

You probably wont need one,but if you have space for HRP,it's worth packing for the longer trips..The only downside is you must sacrifice a slot for limpet storage, which makes small ships exploring quite challenging at times.Hopefully, this drawback will be mitigated somewhat with the arrival of Fleet Cariers. :giggle:
Currently jumping about in the scout with no particular place to be and 450kls to a pair of waterworlds which need adding to the tally. It's been a good trip so far, earlier i stumbled on a system with two ELW's and three terraformable HMC's.A system ripe for expansion and exploitation by the ever burgeoning masses who yearn for colonisation opportunities, lost in a sea of stars.

Silly question time...

This screenshot shows five MCs assigned to fire group 2:

c13Jc0S.jpg

This screenshot shows the state of play, ammunition-wise, how each MC has rounds remaining:

bQUWMSy.jpg

Now, I think, from the first screenshot, the top two are the top mounted ones, the second two on the side and the last is the underside one. So how can I tell from the reload screen (shot 2) which one is running the lowest that needs a reload? Is the "order" the same, as it were, so the last one corresponds to the underside MC?

Sorry, it's a bit late and I hope the question makes sense!
Cheers!

Earlier today I left the Witch Head and set out for Colonia in the Krait. Now 16,410 ly later, I think I need a break. I'm at Caravansomething in the middle of the closest I've seen to a globular cluster:

On the way I've had time to play with the SLF. Would make a very claustrophobic explorer if it could only jump and scoop. At one time I was kicked out smack nose against a black hole, with another black hole about 1000 ls away. Then it was time to deploy the fighter and do some reconescance.
