ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Anyone else take a big performance hit after 2.00 (2.01-2.03)??

With 2.0 my performance was amazing, not so much now. It's still amazingly good experience but, I get jutter now. Looks like I'll need to SLI to hopefully get better performance.
Yeah, I definitely noticed a slight drop going from 2.0 to 2.0.3.

I'm running 2 780 GTXs in SLI and can run with almost max settings including SMAA, but with AO/Blur/Bloom off.

Even so, it still occasionally (randomly) gets sluggish, which, combined with the stupid head wobble stuff from acceleration/turning can make me feel very queasy.

Yes at times it can be a bit rollercoaterish, but Wow.
Wonder if having an active chair would really give you that bit more.

Oh that sounds like a recipe for pebbledashing the computer room.

Incidentally, can anyone actually see what effect Ambient Occlusion has? I'm more than familiar with AO, I've written more than a couple of AO shaders, but I'll be damned if I can see any visible effect of turning it on or off.

VERY disappointing for us still on the list. This is the fourth week of little or no deliveries to Europe :(

Having said that with Slopey's brilliant trading tool having been taken off the market - with Beta 2.0x I've started to manually record lots of information. Is anyone using the Rift doing the same or does it make that impracticable?

Well the changes to 2.04 make a huge difference to the readability of the hud. I turned off the hud stuff in the menu and it is much more readable than it was in 1.06 let alone 2.03

Yes, I'm pleasantly surprised with the 2.04 update, looking a lot better again.

I'm actually going to sit down and play tonight.

I'm heading out of the country for 3 months in November, please hurry up Oculus :) Lol, the truth is, I should have ordered earlier really..

For me the patch releases have performed progressively worse.

In Beta 1 I ran on high and everything was nice and smooth, just slight judder when turning my head quickly in stations but nothing that bothered me.

Beta 2 started with the game looking great. Much more readable text, much less noticeable SDE, great stereo, super smooth head tracking.. just all around improvement. But with pretty bad ghosting in stations which could be removed by lowering settings at the cost of looking more like Beta 1.

By this patch, it neither looks as good nor performs as well as it did before. I can't get a smooth experience in stations on any settings, and just flying around I get pauses. And it's lost a lot of that extra visual quality as well (other than the actual new stuff to see of course). Something just seems not quite right about it. I'll have to play around with config more at weekend and see if I can figure out what's up.

Sooo... after testing and tweaking around some more, I got the faded out colors problem pretty much under control. Basically, you just have to leave the game, restart the drivers (using the OculusServeManager) and start the game again and it should be gone. One problem I didn't get rid of yet, though, is the inconsistent gamma settings. It's more or less luck whether it's too bright, too dark or just right... especially in and around stations, it can be way to bright or too dark (even with gamma turned all the way down).

Also: Sometimes, especially when using the galaxy map, the performance goes down the drain when back into the game. The only thing I can do to resolve that is go somewhere in the game where there is not much around (open space, in example), and it goes back to smooth frame rates.

It looks pretty good, not as good as 2.0 but no major graphical faux pas.

It's crashed twice on me though in 30 mins, the last time hard locking my PC again. I've not had a game do that for years.

There is more jitter moving my head in stations too, it was smooth in 1.06. It's livable with but a step backwards.

I've just had two hours in it, it's the first time I've been able to have any time with a beta 2 build that works on my machine (and not played beta 1 with the Rift much, only had it 10 days) - so I can't really compare it to anything.

Other than I love it. It's beautiful. And after the last few days of re-installing drivers, unable to launch the game, and other problems, I'm still just really stoked that it actually works & works well on my machine. :D

It really doesn't like Crossfire though. Lots of tearing & very much like playing with fogged up glasses on.

Both Rift and monitor?

Hello folks, I got my DK2 already awhile back, but I'm new to ED. (But I did play Elite a lot on the MSX..) I have to say when it doesn't judder it is really amazing thing. I just ordered a GTX 980, lets see how much difference that makes. The old R9 290 just gave up..:)

I was thinking, its nice to be on rift+hotas when you are in space, but when docked, why not use a monitor and mouse? Just raise the rift on your forehead...

I started a new thread on this, please do give your input..:)

As promised after I got help to find the setting again I did try to do some streaming with oculus and it worked pretty good. almost no judder anywhere. :)

Worst was the asteroid belt but still perfectly playable and had some fun dog fighting.

http://www.twitch.tv/zallestial/b/574466870 at 2:20 I put on the oculus, just trash before that so feel free to skip in.

arrival in astroid belt at 8:20, lots of action soon after that.

Hi folks. Just registered an account after lurking here for months because I wanted to share how I got rid of all my stuttering and "white-out (when screen turns light due to loss of position tracking)" issues.

This won't necessarily work for everyone especially those with dated hardware. I'm running a 4790k with a 780ti and could not stand how badly the game performed in the rift. Tried all the suggestions here to no avail but then remembered a trick I used way back to get battlefield 4 running smoothly.

What's the trick? Adjusting the system core parking settings. I'm not expert on this but it has to do with how the OS handles the availability of the cores. Long story short, the utility provided in the link below will allow you to set the cores to never be parked.

I tested this by turning it on and off and have confirmed that this will resolve the stuttering. I'm running at max settings with blur and AA turned ON and shadows on best quality and there is almost zero stutter except inside stations where it happens sporadically. Could not believe this old trick would make such a huge difference.

I have no idea what the long term consequences are by setting the cores at 100% availability so proceed at your own risk. I'm finally enjoying the hell out of E:D and hope you guys get the most out of it also with this method.

Good luck!

Oh here's the link to the utility: http://coderbag.com/programming-c/cpu-core-parking-manager

Hrm... I can't put my finger on it, but I think there is more judder in 2.04. Not really looking around, but something in general. I can't exactly figure what is the cause.

help , any little trick for the judder

Hello every one on the dk2.
I was a first to buy a DK2.. but it was damaged....OH Boy did I curse..

BUT , BUT . a new one arrived yesterday....(so had a sick day off work:) )
But I have dumbed down everything on the graphics.. and still a bit of judder.

I,m sure the answer is on here somewhere , But I don't really want to go through 350+ pages to find the help and advice I need.. please

by the way ..LOVE what I see ..Amazing difference .. the things you notice the ,sparks when you land heavy, the flight manual book tucked in,on the right shelf....MAGIC.
TRY THIS.... adjust your tracking camera so "it appears" you are standing on the pilots seat.. (in the sidewinder) your head 'pops' out of the glass canopy and you can see the ships surfaces better... try flying like this.. and stand up.

do a barrel loop through the docking bay ...standing up.:)

any way ... any help to help remove the judder, any little tricks I missed PLEASE let ME know
:D

Yes, it seems that way to me as well. I've also had a few experiences of the tracking just seizing occasionally for a second or two, even when my head is firmly in the centre of the camera's field of view. The judder doesn't seem to be effected by graphics settings either, it's about the same from "low" to "high"

I notice judder and live with it, but i also noticed that things don't follow up. I f you move your head left and right in the menu, you will see that the menu "stays behind", it cant follow the head movements :S

But in any case, no motion sickness, that is more important:D

Maybe it's just me... But after I play Elite Dangerous with the Dk2 for more than 4 hours :D When I close my eyes I can still see the diamond pixel layout  Anyone else get 'retina burn' from long period of play?
