ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

Personally, I got the best performance with high settings plus SMAA and minus bloom and ambient occlusion... if that's not enough, try lowering shadows to med/low. Blur can actually "improve" FPS by masking some of the judder.

I really would like to try E : D at 75hz however I only have a TV as my main display and I cannot set it above 60hz. I was told that if you can set monitor and rift to 75hz then you can get true low persistance, is there any way I can work around this please?

With the current implementation I don't think your primary monitor refresh rate makes any difference. Select secondary for display and it will default to 75Hz

When you install the headset extended mode etc etc it will be locked at 75Hz in the ED options, no matter what the TV is at. Some early reports stated locking TV/monitor at 75Hz too made a difference. I tested that and to my old eyes made no difference. You should be able to set a HDMI TV to 75Hz using the GPU drivers but not in HDMI mode, the TV requires a lower res to hit 75Hz.

Thanks guys, I've tried various combinations inc. having just the rift as my main monitor which was tricky but after removing the lenses I did get the game up and running. However, in station I can only acheive around 55-60fps anyway which was a surprise as I had all settings down to minimum yet still my R9 290 + i5 2500 just don't seem capable of pushing the frame rate right up to 75hz needed for low persistance anyway.

Hi guys,

Haven't been keeping up with how 2.03 is behaving in the DK2, but looks to be working pretty well now. I just tried accessing the System map though, and it looks like the camera is too zoomed in, I was inside the actual star, with no way to zoom out etc.

Is this a known issue with the System maps and the Oculus Rift currently?

I had the same so I just expected it as an obvious bug. Oculus not really implemented for system map yet I guess.

Since Beta 2, I've been having weird Gamma correction flashes, and the positional tracking seems off. It sometimes snaps me round looking in a new direction. Anyone else have this?

What does the oculus rift graphics slider do ? Is it running at higher resolution?.

Also any advice on what AA to use

Thanks

Presence went up a notch for me with B2 and an upgrade to a 970.

I was getting pretty smoooth frame rates in B1 and 670 but with BT and 970 tracking is like butter with ultra minimal lag. really does make a big difference to feeling like you are there.

bit more resolution and FOV and holy crap this will be mind bending stuff.

I am getting some issues in SC, not sure if it is tracking related or frame rate (doubtful as I am on a 780Ti) What happens is that the tracking seems to pause for a fraction of a second and then catches up with the head movement (sometimes as much as 30-45 degrees skip)

I have it sitting in the staions in the service menue, it' suddenly lurches me forward, sometimes the whole POV shakes. It's wierd and a bit.... upsetting.
:S

I'll do so too, most likely... problem is, the only thing I have to go by on how it "should" look is single display mode, and I'm not quite sure it will ever look like that on the rift, although it did in the previous alpha/beta phases.

When it's working properly it looks like it did in Beta 1.06 and similar to what it looks like on the monitor. You'll know what I mean as soon as you see it.

Also got this and a lot off other ppl . I tryed everything but wont go away AHHH
Has something to do with the trackin i think .

If someone found a solution please post

Yeah, I've see a bit of this.
Might be sudden fps drops that only last a second. I'll try testing over the weekend.

Yes. having those kinds of too. Although at the same time I'm having a little oculus position jitter too. Kind of remind of oculus camera loosing positional tracking for a moment.

Elite washes the colour out of everything when the Rift DK2 camera tracking isn't working. It sounds like you're getting that? I have the odd glitch for a few frames very now and them but it's pretty rare. This sometimes seems to happen when things like planets are loaded as you fly towards them.

This washout effect is something that I haven't see in any other Rift-enabled application, but since Elite is about the only thing I use the DK2 for it might be something that other applications do as well.

If you want to see the effect clearly either move your head out of the camera tracking cone or just look directly behind you so that the camera can only see the back of your head. It's very noticeable.

I get this too. Does not seem a frame rate thing as it's a single big pause in an otherwise smooth flight. Minimum graphics settings also don't get rid.

Could be a tracking issue, but my suspicion is that it's some procedural generation or background simulation routine going on that freezes everything up for a second. Minor issue in most games but a massive one in VR.

Makes me realise how remarkably free from such things the last version was, for a game with so much going on. Hope they can resolve it as it's bad enough at times to be nauseating, which Elite has never been for me.

Anyone else take a big performance hit after 2.00 (2.01-2.03)??

With 2.0 my performance was amazing, not so much now. It's still amazingly good experience but, I get jutter now. Looks like I'll need to SLI to hopefully get better performance.

If you haven't already try turning blur off in the gfx menu, that helped me a lot.
