IF Space Legs, Atmospheric Planets and Base Building are not part of New Era...

It's not something I think many would pay for if there was no interaction with those NPCs. It would be purely cosmetic.
Aye fer sure.

For clarity I'm not trying to sell this as a paid feature or anything. Strontium was talking about Planet Coaster/Zoo tech, I made an offhand comment :

"It would be good even if they just added people walking round the hangar to show scale."

Which Stigbob wanted to focus, hence a page of me trying to clarify what I mean by hangar and scale.

NPCs walking around just bring scale, something ED is badly missing IMHO. One of the arguments for Space Legs is scale.

It would also add a bit of much needed life to the galaxy. (not much admittedly)

It's just if we are talking about Coaster/Zoo tech, this seems like it would be relatively straightforward to introduce, and easy win with a bit of groundwork down to build on.

For paid content I think the more likely idea is paid for hand-crafted mission based story content. I think this is doable, fits in with the trailer style leak we saw in one of the previous patches, previous Elites set a precedent for one off mission based content, and solves a number issues ED has.

Specifically bringing some life to the bubble, introducing actual personalities to the galaxy and bringing some of ED's rich lore to the players via storytelling.

I would like this content to be replayable for different outcomes and therefore different rewards. The difficulty with this is having these missions fit into ED without actually affecting anything (since it's multiplayer). A storytelling focus seems like it could work.

Yeah, that would be cool. Having some scale would be nice.

Quick, someone use this footage and sell it as fake New Era (alpha) Gameplay ;)

PS. If New Era was to lack all mentioned headline features, I'd have no idea what to realistically expect from it.
Full Sandboxing IMHO is beyond FDev's ability (and intent), full Player agenda against their visions, a new, full and balanced MMO design way beyond their capabilities based on previous track record and heavy-handed balancing misses/re-balancing attempts.

I take it the leak is reasonably correct; anything beyond it is intended as a big surprise package anyway it seems.

There has been an unverified leak, but not much else unless Wills eyebrows have semaphored some sort of information.
There was a mod or someone who kept very strongly hinting it's spec legs in the forum somewhere a while back. Unless he was kidding or didn't know what he was talking about. It seemed like an intentional hint. I assumed it was Fdevs way of, "confirming," it. Might have been in one of the official threads too. I don't remember.

Or is that what you were refering too?

I have no idea about the leaky mod, thats news to me. Unless FD are going full psyops on us there is very little to go on. The leak broadly fitted the releases of DLC for other platforms though, so you never know...

Mods are all volunteers so unlikely to have anything direct 'from the horses mouth' - unless it's TJ of course :)

There's a very unconvincing 4chan leak and a lot of internet theorycrafting, but that's all there is.

The only thing the dev's have said is wait and see about new DLC, in the past they've explained space-feet would be so difficult and resource intensive it would be like a whole new game. However people have been throwing fits about lack of feet since pre-launch so its an obvious thing a troll would dangle just to wind up the more gullible.

That doesn't mean its not true, just nowhere near reliable enough to be taken seriously.

I thought they virtually confirmed it's space legs?

Nope. There's nothing but rumours at this point. People expect something "big" because it will be a paid expansion. Being honest, if it turns out not to be space legs or atmospheic worlds (my favorite option), I have no clue what FD could do that would convince the masses to part with another 40$/50$. But FD has a track record of straying off the path to instead work on things nobody ever asked for, like Powerplay or CQC, so who knows?

  • Revamped BGS updating in real-time (no ticks, no Thargsday)
  • a real economy
^^This, pure and simple this! That alone would make New Era a success to me.

Also, couldn't care less about spacelegs or base building, I don't think it belongs in this game. Atmospheric planets would be nice, but I fear that is New Era mkII anno 2022

Powerplay was exactly what a lot of people wanted in that its territorial control. Just limited to being an optional thing due the games blaze your own trail modes based single BGS ethos (which we should have all known about from the start).

CQC was exactly what the PVP'ers had been asking for all along, rebuy free, no engineering to "unbalance" stuff, no "grind wall" limiting access and lots of willing participants. They just didn't like the lack of available salt.

🤷‍♂️

The execution was/is awful though.

Except there is nothing to fight over. PvPers generally want to fight over something, not just a rank.

So no, I don't think any of those really hit the mark very well. Now if there was a territory game in CQC, then that could have changed everything.

If Powerplay was more integrated into the BGS and more of a PvE with optional PvP experience, then again that could have changed everything and made it and the BGS much more interesting. Instead we got a abstract layer on top which does nothing in the grand scheme of things within the game.

I don't think anyone was asking for any of that.
