Star Citizen Discussion Thread v11

Some times you‘ve got to see things in perspective. fdev worked long and hard to get Elite working. What we got was a barebones version. I don’t feel like complaining when it gets to Star Citizen. In my eyes, the game is evolving pretty good. They are getting there, it’s gently caressing complicated what they are trying to achieve.

sometimes you would have to look better at what you post even if it help you support your narrrative.

hey, I would like to work on a sequel of Elite!
ok, development started.

Hmm - my memory of 2 Kickstarters for space games must be playing up. The one had a really nice demo, the other nothing. Two years later I was playing the latter, still waiting on the other. I know I am old and senility is setting in, I must have missed the 15 years from 1997 - 2012.

Congrats to FDev, yet another Guinness World Record to add to their extensive list!

And yet more proof that Chris Roberts had no clue on current game development or production timeframes when he said "we're one year in, two more and things would get stale". Wow, how little he knew 😳

🤣 I feel inclined to offer you a recommendation for a good optometrist. What they're trying to achieve doesn't really matter in light of what they've shown themselves actually capable of achieving or the pace of that sad level of achievement.

And if you want to see things in perspective…

Wait ... you're not really suggesting fdev worked "long and hard" on Elite Dangerous ... from 97?
In my eyes, it's mutating more than evolving. And unfortunately most mutations lead to dead ends in the evolutionary chain, something CIG has demonstrated well in the past.
Please be gentle, the devout fan of Star Citizen is trying his best to join in the thread's discussion.

Facts can be scary when they're not prepared, as this isn't a designated safespace.

Personally, i think Chris Roberts did a fantastic thing back in 2012: because of him the Best Damn Space Sim Ever got crowdfunded, produced, released in 2014, sold 3m+ copies, and is regularly played today.

Thanks Chris 😃

Well, arguably he was quite the prophet with that statement. It did get stale.

Unfortunately some backers took that award and ran with the idea that ED was in development for years before SC.

The most extreme case of delusion i saw was from one backer who was seriously suggesting FD started work on ED before Frontier: First Encounters was released.

Picking a side and enforcing it often spirals out these days. No wonder we do have this flatearther society on hands.

People like to gloss over EDs success but that "barebones" version was technically sound, reliable and had a good foundation. It was light on content and arguably still is but at least ED allows devs to add more stuff to it. I m sure financial support is a factor in this. Instead I see money flowing to a technically inferior product that cant seem to even nail down its foundation, runs with a prayer to god and cant help itself but profit on promises it simply cannot deliver.

Roberts stated that he always wanted to build Star Citizen even back in 1990.....conclusion?

Ah yeah here the extreme bias kicks in that makes the same thing reason to mock, ridicule and bash one game, only point out how superior and grad Star Citizen is.

I can only buy so many paint packs. And SC at least has a chance of becoming a game I really want to play. I don't think ED does. Always up for being wrong though.

I swear we put paid to this nonsense only a short while ago.

You were shown a quote from David Braben where he states in no uncertain terms that development started during the Kickstarter, not years before. I don't know if it is bad memory or just peddling false crap..

Both (assuming comptent devs) have the scope to become great games.

In your case, with your love of PvP, i agree, i don't think ED will ever be the game you want. The smaller scale of SC and lack of modes means its much more PvP "friendly". However, there are those in the SC community who really don't like the idea of getting pad rammed or being blown up as they exit the safety zone around stations, and will not appreciate being told to git gud or fly a something better (when perhaps they can't afford anything better), and some who just want to chill. They backed SC based on the dreams CIG sold them (PvP sider, NPC to Player ration 90 to 10, with NPCs being indistinguisable from players (LOL!)).

For the moment, they can still dream. Limited players on a server, the PvP guilds/clans/whatever not really in full swing perhaps, no real loss, so griefers perhaps not so interested yet, and they can always fall back on "its early days, its alpha" to assuage their concerns about how the final game might be, and it allows them to continue dreaming.

As things get closer to release, or upon release, they might find that the game isn't what they expected, and the forum wars will truly start, akin to what we have here. And CIG might listen to those people, and make changes which make the game less PvP friendly, and that will then upset the PvPers.

Dreams are easy. Reality sucks.

I have enjoyed ED and NMS each in their own way. Both being very different games. I like to hope that SC/SQ will get to the level that they would be a fun prospect for me.

One concern with SC is that PvP really isn't my thing so it'll need to have a solo or PvE option as ED and NMS do, where NMS has the best solution for how I like to play.

E. Excuse the ramble.... I haven't had coffee yet...

Yeah, if we go by that logic Star Citizen development would have started in the year 2000, when Chris Roberts is already on record about his intentions for a sequel to Freelancer. And breaking that Guinness record.

I've had lots of coffee, here are my predictions:

  • SC will either become a tangled skein of barely operating systems, or a bland expanse of culled features simulating stability. If it's the former I'm gonna finally buy Vorpx and force it to work in VR for fun ;)
  • NMS will miraculously keep adding things and mainly functioning in VR. I'll be dropping back in for the jetpacks, not the jets. (Don't let me boast about the way my CPU doesn't explode into shards while doing this...)
  • ED will add Legs, and more scaffolding bearing a sign that declares: 'Potential!'. It will probably work in VR and I will probably play it a lot. And then spend some more time falling through the scaffolding. Hardcore citizens will not play it, because it does not feature box carrying, functioning toilets, or the things that will definitely be added to SC later.

Half a coffee in, still can't focus properly - this made me laugh a lot! 'Scaffolded Potential' - perfect!

My award will go to the game that is first to implement functioning mop & bucket* gameplay.

* Am I imagining, or was this a serious suggestion made by CiG?? A bleary eyed CMDR wishes to know...
