Star Citizen Discussion Thread v11

Multiplayer is a lot of fun.

Multiplayer is generally lots of fun in any game. It comes from playing with other people.

But thanks for the video, watching it now.

First thing was interesting to note was global chat where it seems some people are having a discussion about grouping up, with one player not happy that it seems you have to group up to achieve something.

Oh, white knight in the chat. "Roadmap is a courtesy, they don't have to show it to us nor should we expect them to adhere to it"

MOST OPEN DEVELOPMENT EVER!!!

Also, lol at not expecting them to stick to it. Sure, roadmaps are not perfect, but CIGs constant pushing back of a majority of stuff is a really big red flag.

Pls, pls, pls screenshot that and put it in that thread about FD owing people a roadmap, and quote that post about how great SC's roadmaps are, pls.

Oh hey… now CI¬G aren't content with just being scummy but they have chosen to delve into outright illegal territory:

Not too appear dense or anything...but what the hell is GDPR when it's at home...will it destroy all human life as we know it or should I wear a mask?

I'm serious by the way...since I don't follow the latest trendy tinfoil hattery crusades of human rights on t'internet that much. I kinda look at Twitch, Twitter and general social media fixations I read on here (since I don't partake of any of them) with an expression like this on my face...

I'm of the opinion that social media personality extensions like them kill off not only braincells... but the pure common sense that folks generally develop once they become adults.

GDPR: General Data Protection Regulation. EU law on data protection and privacy.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Data_Protection_Regulation

I won't comment on its merits here, per forum policies regarding not discussing politics, but I will note that it is fairly explicit about requiring consent before gathering personal data, and if CIG are making this the default, and hiding it away, they may find themselves in trouble.

You mean just like every other business, news agency, bank, insurance company and government institution from the DVLA, police and social security departments worldwide violate with complete impunity?

However, that opt out of GDPR option is a recent addition to the RSi account settings...never used to be there until very recently...I checked mine in my account settings since after looking at the image the Twitter poster presented on his feed, I didn't recognise the setting in the image. On mine, it's set to off... or 'yes' to opt out....which must be by default since I never saw the settings option before I looked after reading it on here. I do check my settings quite a lot since when melting stuff, I have to turn the 2 step verification on which I have disabled by default. That's not to say the Twitter poster is wrong, it might be a default setting on newly created accounts...no idea.

Besides...the option to opt out is clearly there...whether enabled or disabled by default is pure semantics since I don't know of anyone who wouldn't be looking in there when setting up an account anyway, it's not like it's hidden. It's a simple matter of clicking the option...an option which clearly implies seeking consent.

Like I said, I'm not going to get into a debate about the merits of current data protection laws. Or for that matter over the degree to which they are actually enforced. All I'm saying is that from what I've seen here, CIG may find themselves in need of legal advice from someone familiar with the GDPR, since what they seem to have done might appear to be contrary to section 7, regarding consent. This could potentially be expensive.

The GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) sets a maximum fine of up to €20 million or, in the case of an undertaking, 4% of annual global turnover – whichever is greater – for infringements.

Edit:
In case anyone is wondering whether the GDPR is ever actually enforced, I'll note the just over a year ago Google was fined €50m for breaches involving the use of data collected without proper consent.

No. Police or government organisations need to apply to a court before they can access your data, and then just have access. They can't sell it to a third party. The press sometimes use personal data, but then find themselves in court having to prove it was in the public interest.

In my last job I handled very sensitive data (which happens when you are a database developer) and had to do a refresher course and take an exam on data protection, every year. As part of the course they would cite the most prominent cases from the last year to show how serious the consequences of flouting the law or just being careless was.

If CI(G) are ever found to have been selling data and try to justify it with this default setting. That could very well be the end of them.

This is what happens when you live as a recluse and your only company is a bunch of cows :D

I just prefer old fashioned company...the type that turn their phones off or just leave it in their kitchen drawer when they come round to ours for a blether ;)

I can just imagine how those conversations go :D

Just pulling your leg here btw

I don't think you can opt-in or out of GDPR as it's an active law and covers data gathering, handling and dissemination. You have to opt-in to allowing the company involved to use the data beyond its original purpose. (not lawyer)
