Your last enjoyable Elite activity?

Was musing with my old guild buddy the other day and we got to chatting about ED again.
We both came to the realisation that the last thing we had both enjoyed was participating in DW2.
Even more disturbing was that since DW2 finished last summer we had only been online together in Elite on two occasions!

Anyone out there finding fun stuff to do?
Honestly? Exploring early 2016... Finished a trip, got back, and been waiting since for the game to actually progress. So only jump in here and there to try features. FOUR YEARS...

Exploring, yes you heard me, it went from my fav to least fav things in game once I went to the SigA and back. Outside of the bubble there is nothing more than pretty repetitive PG craters. Oh and mindless jump, scoop loading screen... Never again.

Yep... Game released and a year later a big bar raising exploration update with planetary surfaces... And then...? Five years later? But at least there was time for Multicrew!

I've been trying to build a sacrificial assassination ship lately.
I've tried with a Krait Phantom, Viper Mk3 and DB Scout so far.

Concept is all out Thermal Conduit Beam Lasers and Thermal Resistant Armour, then fire at will while silent running with 200% to 300% heat levels.

Not very effective but very fun non the less. The Thermal Resistant Armour is working like a charm but Modules are melting and failing super quickly despite extra Module Reinforcement Packages.

I'm still fiddling...
Next step is to try it out with Sturdy Beams, see how much longer I can sustain fire for...

I call the ship "Ritual"

Multicrew... and Barnacles, and Thargoids, and Guardian ruins and sites, and brain trees, and bio and geo sites, and notable stellar phenomena, and shards, and exploration update, and mining update, and new ships, and many bug fixes and QoL features. But don't let facts get in the way of a good rant.

A while back I finally worked out that I could map lateral thrusters (the "strafing" ones) to L3/R3 on my pad, enabling me to fly FA Off without having to switch modes. In a stock Sidey all of a sudden I managed to FA Off-land at a Coriolis station and explore the outer sections of it without much hassle. So much fun, even though no credits were earned.

Yesterday, I finally arrived back in Colonia on my alt account, getting there was a slog but managed to build a new ship (sporting the absolutely glam Stygian Red PJ) already A-rated it - it's a PvE one-ship-for-all kind of build - and will now be able to G5 it over the next number of weeks, without the need to jump more than 2-3 times at a time to get anywhere.

Already bumped into a few forum regulars but want to remain incognito for the time being;) it's nice to see so many familiar names from here in the game though.

I'm exactly on the same boat.
DW2 was great, after that I only mined for few weeks preparing for Fleet Carriers and that's it.
I tried to take part to the Golconda event but when I found out that there was no new interaction with the generation ship and it turned out to be just another hauling CG I gave up.
I really hope for the New Era to refresh my game experience 'cause at the moment I'm not even interested in FC anymore.

Well I'm still aboard Gnosis and as it looks like the flightplan is to continue on her Colonia heading, that should take about a year. An enjoyable thought in itself for me though, like a slow boat to China. Week on week a new environment, last week docking was tricky with Gnosis in fast orbit of a neutron star, too quick for a direct approach under FSD gravity effects (so spent some time wake scanning and broadcasting the offer of nav-lock approach assists). This week found a couple of new trait biological sites, picked up some materials and doing a spot of Monazite mining before engine go tomorrow. It might not be all whiz bang but it's varied, detailed and more sociable than pure exploration, as there are commanders of various nationalities aboard, some known some new.

That does sound pretty neat actually. I wouldn't have the patience for it myself but it's cool the game caters for those who do.

Fair enough, let's put some "facts" on the table shall well? :)

Let's take one item from your list shall we? Let's take a big one... the only chance CMDRs had to experience the first time an alien invasion took place in Elite Dangerous. "Thargoids!"

FD had years to prepare for the Thargoid Invasion. They knew it was coming, so had plenty of time to invest new mechanics and gameplay into ED, ready to then make the most of the invasion? Can you name a single mechanic they put into place in the preceeding years, ready to then leverage when the Thargoid invasion happened to make the most out of it? More involved combat scenarios? NPC Wingmen? Fighter based combat scenarions/missions attacking/defending locations? Stuff to actually leverage and utilise as part of Thargoid related gameplay? Because I can't...

Instead year after year was "wisely" spent on the likes of Multicrew and game unbalancing Engineering, so when the Thargoid Invasion finally came, the kind of gaming experience FD could offer us leveraging the mechanics they'd wisely investing in, was:-
1) Interdictions, where you could do nothing but watch.
2) Stations being attacked by invisible fleets when the game was offline.

Why aren't we swapping into a Powerplay type view to see the Thargoid position across the bubble? Why are we seeing tasks in areas to affect that position? Why in 2020 are we not able to utilise gameplay mechanics we have back in games from the 1990s, such as being able to launch in a wing of fighters (other CMDRs or controlled NPCs) to attack/defend assets/locations to actually affect the Thargoid position?

For the past 4-5yrs the level of features added to ED (IMHO) have been all too often half baked and shallow. And the Thargoid invasion underlines this... A chance to add some more involved joined up gameplay, and instead years were spent on other shallow features, such that when the Thargoids arrived, the game literally had no mechanics to leverage to make much of it.

And let's take a more recent example from your list? Mining 2.0? Areas of it certainly are good, but again, others just show FDs inabilty to do well designed layered mechanics. We have a scanner (PWA) which is all but pointless, and whole areas of mechanics (eg: subsurface deposits) so poorly implemented, they are all but a waste of time. Again, it just seems to show a lack of joined up design ability.

So yes, lots of things have been added to ED over the past 4-5yrs, but too many of them have been shallow (point and click Generation Ships), dust collecting (Thargoid bases), basically misguided (Multicrew) or even needlessly upset the the balance of the game (eg: Engineering for PvP and PvE). And all this with supposedly 100+ people beavering away on the game year after year?

IMHO, FD just seem to struggle at design or management level with what they're doing with ED... Too much effort has been squandered over the past 4-5yrs, and there seems have been little desire or ability to create bar raising features. And the fact so many features are pulled and delayed literally months before release, just seems to underline this design/management issue.

Apart from Fuel Ratting, a long time ago, I enjoyed the Thargoid Combat Zones ... BUT really fine was the Guardian relic/sites stuff.

And I feel if FD doesn't add a bit more Guardian/Thargoid storyline (or another comparable one), there is not much left to motivate more (or at least longer) gameplay. Which is a great shame, considering the unmatched quality of the game, sounds, graphics, atmosphere by itself.

So I still hope for the new season. IF FD miraculously re-discovers storyline as a topic ...

My last enjoyable Elite activity?
Don't know yet. Probably whatever I happen to be doing when I nod off in front of the screen for the very last time on this Earth.

Latest one was last night, got to to tick one small part of my current exploration/survey project complete before logging off. :)
