ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

On the subject of reading sidepanels, have you tried turning on Blur in the graphics options, it made reading text on the panels clearer for me, i also find that adjusting the rift position slightly on my head helps over time.
Yea, I tried... problem is, since the cloud effects are gone, high gamma makes the black text on bright background unreadable, and low gamma makes the light text on dark background unreadable. With the "old" effects, everything was slightly brighter by default, so low almost any gamma setting was ok.

This actually seemed to help! Thanks! I was having stuttering (losing positional tracking) every ten seconds and gamma type flashes constantly. After this I seen only one flash in one hour of game play. I have to keep my eye on core temps. But during the one hour test no problems.

Top helped me a lot ! before my cores where running at 60% 40% 30% 30% now they are 70% 70% 60% 60%

and preformance went up :D

Got my DK2 working in Beta 2.04 with 2 GTX 970s in SLI with high or ultra settings on everything with Blur on/AA off/Ambient occlusion off/ all i can say is
WOW  i could write so many things about the incredible view with the DK2 in this game but i would take up so much space here :)

i am completley blown away by the sense of depth/scale, the sheer beauty of it is astonishing, i truly feel like i am actually there in the cockpit of a spaceship in the utter vastness of space, and i can read the text on everything clearly, i really think in terms of technolgy this is like going from the stone age to the space age in one step, i really urge people to get either a DK2 or get the CV1 when it comes out just for THIS game alone, not to mention other games coming out for DK2 in the future :) dont even think about getting one, just do it now :D

Thank you so much to David Braben and the whole team at FD for making this game AND to all the people here that are helping to test it ( i humbly include myself in this too ) :) without these amazing people this game would not have been made.

Forgot to add, in SLI mode i do geting a banding pattern somethimes on planets, one moment the planet will look as it is supposed to, next moment banding occours as if the planet has been split into different segments.

Nice words Aldric :) Things of dreams are finally becoming reality!

Thoughts from Saudi...

So I had to leave my beautiful water cooled rig back home in London as work started again after the summer over here in Jeddah. armed with my 780m laptop and my DK2 I booted up Elite Dangerous .... Crash! BSOD x100!!! System service exceptions galore!

After a few refreshes and figuring out how to del the riftenabler.sys file after a crash instead of a whole system wipe I finally got stuck into Beta 2...

Today I clocked up about seven hours game time and I am amazed at how far things have progressed. I was just plucking up the courage to ask the missus for permission to have a new rig shipped over, but I have decided to hold off. Not only was the game play amazing today, it was also smooth as you like. Didn't do any specific FPS checks, but didn't need to. On medium settings the 780m is handling way better than expected or previously experienced. No idea why things are suddenly so much better! I have tweaked and refined the settings over and over, but something must've just clicked today!

I couldn't be happier, although the wife is sulking because I didn't take her shopping! :p

I played ED on my monitor for 30 Minutes...
And, after that time, i must change back to OR...:)

I think i can never play ED without a OR...:)

Lol, tried the same thing tonight, everything nice and clear but the lack of scale and 3D made me switch back after 2 minutes.

For me ED is a pure VR game, can't play it any other way now!

Hi folks. Just registered an account after lurking here for months because I wanted to share how I got rid of all my stuttering and "white-out (when screen turns light due to loss of position tracking)" issues.

This won't necessarily work for everyone especially those with dated hardware. I'm running a 4790k with a 780ti and could not stand how badly the game performed in the rift. Tried all the suggestions here to no avail but then remembered a trick I used way back to get battlefield 4 running smoothly.

What's the trick? Adjusting the system core parking settings. I'm not expert on this but it has to do with how the OS handles the availability of the cores. Long story short, the utility provided in the link below will allow you to set the cores to never be parked.

I tested this by turning it on and off and have confirmed that this will resolve the stuttering. I'm running at max settings with blur and AA turned ON and shadows on best quality and there is almost zero stutter except inside stations where it happens sporadically. Could not believe this old trick would make such a huge difference.

I have no idea what the long term consequences are by setting the cores at 100% availability so proceed at your own risk. I'm finally enjoying the hell out of E:D and hope you guys get the most out of it also with this method.

Good luck!

Oh here's the link to the utility: http://coderbag.com/programming-c/cpu-core-parking-manager

I noticed the same thing on my AMD CPU. AMD has a thing called 'overdrive' in which it allows the CPU to, briefly, overclock itself, within its thermal envelope. Seems a no-brainer, more MHz for the same money. However, I found out that after a brief period of higher clocks, the various cores would clock themselves down to cool of again. Result: stutter.

I now run the CPU at stock clocks, and no more stutter (that is, not where one wouldn't expect it). Probably better cooling would allow me to run the overclocked speeds, but as it stands, disable overdrive for a more consistent experience.

Maybe it's just me... But after I play Elite Dangerous with the Dk2 for more than 4 hours :D When I close my eyes I can still see the diamond pixel layout  Anyone else get 'retina burn' from long period of play?

Yep, especially in poor lighted rooms, the pentile matrix is there.

Do i have a halo??

Hey all, not really a problem here just wondered if its a problem with my setup every time i look up with the rift i seem to get some sorta gamma boost and look forward again and its back to normal its not that much of a boost that it hurts your eye`s as such but just kinda breaks the emersion a little?

Yes it is great, for me it feels like I'm at the helm of sailing boat :) Once you get a bigger ship try to take a walk around your cocpit (be carefull with the cable) - awesome experience for me

""it feels like I'm at the helm of sailing boat"".. YES! thats a great description,
i got my boyfriend --non gamerperson  to "have a go".....

and he wouldnt get off.... ....thinking we might end up having fights over whos turn to do "just one more trip before bed."....ha ha ha :D

Have anyone also Problems with shadow pictures or frames, when turning your head? The problem is since Beta 2 and i have nothing change at my system.

Only one solution for that: 2nd "passenger rift". ;)

What the! I have a single 970 and on high preset (with shadows and textures down to medium, AA off), I get the same performance as you..

I definitely haven't touched the rift quality slider!

BBtw the rift slider essentially lowers the resolution the game is rendered at, and upscales it to 1080p.. I'd avoid using it if possible.

Thanks Rob! I ran MSI Afterburner with my setup and one of my cards was not being used at all. SLI does not seem to be implemented (as standard) in Beta 2 after all.

Some googling led me to forcing AFR 2 in Nvidia Inspector and seeing if that worked. It doesn't seem to play nicely with the rift and one card was still not being used, overall performance was worse.

Still, Rob, your settings seem pretty nice for a single 970. Do you really get no judder even in stations? I'm going to give them a shot now. So far I was just switching between the chunky presets... (Maybe I'll try disabling SLI altogether as well...) EDIT - Just tried your settings, also disabled SLI altogether but it had no effect. No way I can run your settings on a single 970 judder free on a station landing pad. Out in space it's a different story ofc. Maybe its my CPU or something else...

If Aldric (or anyone) can let me know how they got SLI working with the DK2, I'd be most appreciative!

Ok messed around with settings and I just can't get anything to work in or around stations . the only way is to lower the oculus slider down to mid but the graphics and text are just terrible which is just unplayable especially as 1.6 was so good.

My specs are 4690k i5 r9 290 tri x with 8 gig ram . game is on SSD

I have the same setup, mine is smooth. Catalist 14.7 Win 7 64bit

- Set the rift as external display (Left display in windows)

- Turn off windows aero

- Set the graphics settings to low in elite, and then turn off blur, set aliasing to ffxx (first one)

Mine is smooth in stations and space, but when in training in the astroid belt its laggie

Cheers

Rob

Since the latest update the game stutters really badly for me, it looks like the game is loosing tracking and constantly flickers to the paler colouring and back. V4.00 seemed fine and I was impressed with how smooth the game play in stations was. V4.04 - completely unplayable for me, screen constantly juttering in stations and even space.

Anyone noticed this or have a work around?
