Just popping in to this thread to say, with Boris Johnson utterly destroying the widely understood "STAY HOME" message today, we're in deep deep cack here in UK now. We're about to have an almighty second wave I suspect.

The change in message a) wasn't discussed with the other 3 governments in UK, and b) isn't agreed with now it's been revealed. Scotland Wales and NI First Ministers ALL refusing to change the message, reiterating STAY AT HOME. And c) apparently even Health Secretary Hancock's response to Boris's plan was "give me a break!".

sigh
It was noticeable that the when the 'science' guy (Van Tam?) in the daily briefing was asked yesterday 'why are we relaxing restrictions when we aren't seeing a drop in daily new cases?' yesterday he struggled to come up with a response and ended up not answering that question at all (and the questioner was not given a follow-up). When this is all over it will be interesting to see how much the govt is following the advice they are given.

It’s been pretty clear the uk is heading for more infections, and I suspect you’re right @sewerratuk that they feel they can speed it all up a bit.
I disagree about thinking it’s the dog wagging the tail though. Every single move of the gov is prioritising economy over our aged and vulnerable.

I read a Swedish epidemiologist that claimed that every singel person on earth will get infected. He claimed that herd immunity does not work and that no one can afford to wait out a vaccine. Medical treatment capacity was the only valid reason for any type of restrictions, his opinion. Other than that, the goal should be to push the population trough the infection, as fast as possible.

This seem to be close to the strategy of the UK government.

In my opinion it seem strange to have that little faith in vaccine and improved treatment, but I'm not an epidemiologist. 🤷‍♂️

I can’t really see us putting this covid virus genie back into the bottle - so indeed, we can presume the majority will eventually get it.
What I take issue with is not taking every precaution possible to prevent our elders and vulnerable from getting it.
Here in the uk, I think the current biggest daily deaths are amongst our care homes; I don’t believe they have sufficient ppe or support.

In Norway we have 129 deaths in care homes, 86 in hospital, 3 at home and 1 unknown.
That is less than 40% in hospital.
Our numbers are to small to be statistically solid, but I expect it's quite close to other north European countries.

As in many countries, the Queen Economy becomes THE priority.

People can die, these hard-working humans remain an adjustment variable for the capitalism.

Tens of thousands of elderly people who die,, are also retirement pensions not to be paid for years.

Yeah but a society which thinks that is normal is not very nice.
I have no desire to go back to that normal; where we accept the loss of our elders and vulnerable over the economy; to consume crap produced by virtual slavery; to burn hydrocarbons which destroy our lungs and wild life; to industrialise farmed animals in mega buildings; to reward greed and callousness; to stir hatred of our differences; to crap on our teachers and carers and artists; I don’t want to accept that normal!
With the world in lockdown, we’re estimated to reduce carbon emissions by 8% this year. Yep, 8%.
The economic impact of this pandemic pales against the slower but deadlier impact of climate change.
I suspect that we’ll continue to muddle on, adapting to crisis after crisis, it’s hard to let go of our addictions to our luxuries.
I don’t know what the solution is, and I don’t pretend not to enjoy my toys, but if all our car, ship and plane journeys are only amounting to 8%, my putting the cardboard in the right box is not really gonna save us.

guys I don't know if you can see this, that's how a doctor prepares in Madrid only to enter a room with a covid patient. At the end of the video what it says is:
"All this ,just to enter a room with a covid patient, and then you go out to do group sports.Thank you."

Madrid is still bad and will not be able to pass the phase in the de-escalation, people, even some autonomy politicians, think that the virus has disappeared from the streets and are not taking the appropriate measures. 🤦‍♂️

Canary Islands luckily is fine, with no deaths this week, tomorrow we start the 2nd phase.

edit:Germany has seen a rebound after easing restrictions.

The truth is probably that they know the infection/fatality rates are decreasing massively, especially in places that aren't London, and the figures are being artificially inflated by reports of deaths where C19 was a secondary cause - often without any testing carried out for verification.

The government aren't going to come out and directly dispute figures submitted by health services (who, at the moment, are above criticism), so they're just quietly being skeptical of them.

There doesn't appear to be any reason for that Tweet other than propaganda purposes. What the Heck happened to the BBC!?
Im suprised you're only understanding the means and methods of Media controlling the masses.....
im sure we had discussions like this in the past!!
To think that the peoples greatest worry was Climate change or even back further during 2017 when Trump changed all the supposed norms of political correctness to even today with the Whole Covid-19 woes......... some people still fail to see the Elephant in the room!!
Fake News is the biggest opponent to truth!! That is the single biggest issue TODAY!!!

I am 100% in agreement with you.

Let’s hope that a saving awareness will change things.

But I'm not optimistic if the men alone make the decisions.

A very severe worsening of the pandemic at the global level and / or disasters due to the global warming caused by the harmful human activities could dissuade us from returning to "normality".

There is an unspoken reality: reduction of the pensionable population can salvage economies going forward. It's Logan's Run thinking, and it might well be driving the economic input into murderous political decisions, such as hiding the CDC reopening guidelines from the public.

Essentially, the pro-economy cohort are the real Death Panels.

If you are unlucky enough to be trapped in such a country, you are constrained to try to protect yourself, provided you can tell that your stochastic risk is purposefully being raised. Those that cannot tell will simply get winnowed at random.

Aside from continuing to avoid people, and disinfect yourself often, getting proper mask coverage is critically important.

This version is similar to mine. Maybe a 3D version might be easier to do?

I'm back home, minus some spare parts. Going to remain out of action for a while. Worst possible timing, but unavoidable.

Who's stopped worrying about climate change? Just because we've got a lot on our plates at the moment doesn't mean our desserts aren't still going to come from the kitchen. It's going to be tricky staying in our homes when they are 4ft under water. Social distancing is going to be hard in the community buildings that will be set up to accommodate the flood victims

Sure I'm miffed at the BBC for the way they are spinning the truth. If they weren't so scared of losing their funding they wouldn't be rolling over for the Tories the way they are. But at least they are still telling the truth (most of the time)

I've no doubt Dominic Cummings is going to start his propaganda machine up and force a stop to the lock-down. I just hope that the NHS will be able to cope with the next wave of Covid19 patients

You see that's the thing about these politicians who lie through their teeth about this epidemic... it didn't go away in April. We can't just take it on the chin and go back to work. You can't just pretend everything is okay when the bodies are starting to pile up

Who's stopped worrying about climate change?

People who struggle with object permanence. And to all the you-know-whos that struggle with 'fake news media': go to school, learn to think and the problem is solved. The issue isn't people being biased, everyone is biased. The issue is with ignorant people lacking the cognitive abilities to handle biased information and demanding a One True Source of Truth.

Well sorry pal, no book or TV channel gonna offer it: we'll just gonna have to grow up and learn think for yourselves.

You might find that C19 changes things in ways you don't expect.

When things are humming along smoothly, it's easy to divert energy and attention to abstract concerns such as climate change, equality and the acceptable use of pronouns.
When, on the other hand, people no longer have the means to feed themselves or pay their bills, their concerns are likely to focus on the things that affect them most directly.

If there's a widespread conscious realisation that tomorrow's problems aren't important to starving homeless people, you might find that people defend their immediate priorities more fiercely.

Or, alternatively, people are now learning that the status quo was never a given, future threats do exist and not preparing for it has consequences.

In the end I suspect little changed: those who understand the issue still do, others have one more excuse to ignore it.
