Pretty sure I just heard Chris Roberts release a scream that rivaled Wesley's scream on the Torture Machine in Princess Bride. "I just sucked one year of your life away, so, how did that make you feel...and remember, this is for posterity, so be honest." :)

Nah, he saw the jetpacks and immediately rushed out into the office to tell everyone to drop everything and add jetpacks to the game.

Also, engineers? Upgradable equipment? Oh dear... Engineer grind v2.0 incoming.

  • please do NOT add an upkeep mechanic again! (e.g. if we can build bases)

This. Very very this.

The new surface details are looking great. Fingers crossed we get flora and fauna too.

I like the nods to NMS, jet packs and player hubs. The latter works really nicely in NMS and allows some nice interactions.

PS... Horray for everything \o/

Very excited for this!

My two biggest questions:
  1. Is there VR support for this expansion? I love playing the game in VR, and would love to walk around my ships interiors and stations! If it wasn't supported, my enthusiasm will be quickly deflated.
  2. If so, please make sure that proper support for left-handed VR players is a consideration. Other games, like No Man's Sky, forgot lefties completely. Accessibility considerations takes on new dimensions in VR with tracked controllers as input. This includes: Navigating menus and UI selections with either hand, ability to optionally swap sticks for locomotion, holding guns/tools in either hand, making sure sights "snap" to either eye if implementing virtual sights.
I'm also curious about:
  • With the ability to land on barren atmospheric worlds being shown in the trailer, will we also be able to land on more types of worlds? Will we also potentially see the ability to land on more kinds of worlds than we could in the past? (water worlds, ammonia worlds, volcanic, earth-like, etc.)
  • Any changes to allow for more diversity of planets, like tidally locked worlds, and different biomes within the the same world? How about some aurorae?
  • Any plans for updates to stellar bodies like black holes (proper lensing effects and accretion discs), systems with protoplanetary discs (since the cloud tech is there now), differing models for supergiants as oblate stars, contact binaries, comets (I want to stand on a comet, mine it, etc.!!!)

Will this be a paid update for those who have a lifetime expansion pass? I'm hearing both yes and no.

That explains why the timing for announcements was staying the same despite the delay.

Tomorrow was going to be a big PS5 launch announcement. I wonder if Elite was going to be one of the titles announced?

Also called it, looks like the game engine has been updated/upgraded as well.

The Sphere of Combat

Experience intense first-person combat, kit out your character with an array of weapons and gear, and coordinate with teammates to master a multi-layered, deep, tactical environment where Commanders, SRVs and Starships converge.

1. We do not know if its just a FPS bolt on. From the blurb it doesn't sound like it.
2. It doesn't need to compete with other FPS games, it just needs to be good.

As stated, they are not building a FPS and doesn't need to compete with them.

Because they are not building a FPS.

Max, please enlighten us what they actually build then!

You seem to know more then FD, because they tell us that it's first-person combat and the guys on all the picures are holding guns. Or are those well disguised clubs, maces and swords and they actually make a first person melee combat game?

On foot!

Walk around and find the right rocks placed miles apart to shoot with your laser blaster and automagically fill your material backpack.

Yeah. Doing stuff like that already.

Can you see the atmospheric landings?
Can you read the post?

It definitely says FPS combat, I'll grant you. But that's clearly not all it is, based on... literally everything else in the post.

I can't wait to see all the salty Space Leg haters quit the game now.
I know. I dont like the space combat PvP in this game. Never once in all the years have I complained or threatened to quit because of it. I ignore it like a adult and choose to play the parts of the game I do like. Complaining about FD not making the game you specifically want is childish. Criticism is perfectly acceptable, but threatening to quit is silly.

But they have atmospheres also ;)

Where is there any indication of atmosphere? Everybody wears a spacesuit and carries a large gun in the pictures. Not a single word about atmosphere, either. I guess the smiley you added wanted to hint that neither of them actually was mentioned?

They built an add-on to ED, not a FPS game..ED already exists. Also it's not just combat, there is also diplomacy and trade missions. Sure there will be combat too. All this does is make it a First person perspective play expansion, that is being added to Elite Dangerous, not a dedicated FPS standalone game. Read the blurb instead of cherry picking parts to boost your argument.
