They don't have a SUPER bullet proof record of saying things will come and then them coming.

If VR is not added at the ground level it becomes increasingly hard to add it (NMS shows it is possible tho) and I am a pessimist!
Yeah I can understand that. But it's not being dropped from the current game, and it was never said it was going to be in the expansion.

It's not being dropped, it's not being added to the new expansion at launch.

Yes, they did use the phrase "at launch", however, "we had to re-examine if we could deliver that same experience without compromise" leaves that a pretty big and open question. The only thing promising about whether or not they'll fulfill that is this statement: "We’re big fans of VR".

So, while "at launch" and "big fans" are there the "re-examine" leaves it pretty open. As a VR player myself, having waited 5 years for atmospheric landings... waiting another... what? 1? 2? 5? 10? years to include VR is a pretty big and open question.

I wish you were right, but Odyssey clearly includes atmospheric planets, which from the sounds of it will not support VR even from the cockpit...

Does it? I've seen this mentioned a few times, but from the trailer I saw it was just 2 people walking around on a regular dusty non-atmo planet in full space suits.

As long as I can still play in VR and not be completely crippled for doing so (like if you ignored Engineers from Horizons), I'd buy Odyssey either way. The only thing that would kill ED for me is if VR became untennable or if by playing VR I was choosing to limit myself to the point that the game wasn't fun anymore. If they separate it out enough that I can just plan my gameplay sessions around 2D fps mode and VR space flight mode, I'd be all over it.

Now, if I go to fly onto an atmospheric planet and it says "Sorry, you can't do this in VR", that would be some crap lol.

I'm glad I won't need to buy it on my main account, as that means I will most likely try it out for a bit (but not being a great FPS fan, I haven't seen anything in the blurb that I'm personally looking forward to yet). But I won't be buying it on any alt account until VR is added to Odyssey (in the vain hope that it does happen).

Currently, Elite Dangerous: Odyssey will not be VR-compatible at launch. We’re big fans of VR and we are truly proud of the amazing experience that we currently offer in Elite Dangerous. However, the new gameplay, mechanics and features that will be introduced with Elite Dangerous: Odyssey means that we had to re-examine if we could deliver that same experience without compromise, which, for launch, means Odyssey will not be VR-compatible.
Oof. Big capital F. On the plus side, I’ll get to save some money! Yay!

I feel conflicted about this update. I could give up VR if the space legs were complete - ship interiors, exploring inside abandoned bases and generation ships, base (or even campsite) building. I could also give up space legs if Odyssey gave us flying and driving over atmospheric planets in VR. But it sounds like the DLC with be neither. In other words this DLC sounds...

HALF-BAKED!

How does a planet without atmosphere have a blue sky?

I just chalked it up to "trailer needs to look good". I figured if they were going to show us an atmo planet, they would at least put in a tree/bush or have the people take their helmet off or something. I could be wrong, but I really thought the blue sky was just for cinematic effect and not a statement of any kind.
