ANNOUNCEMENT Elite Dangerous: Odyssey Announcement

If any of the CM's are still reading I have a genuine question ...

Will people in VR still be able to fly space ships around beneath a blue sky?

In other words, at what point is VR not supported? Is it when you enter glide for an atmospheric world, when you transition to "legs", or when you launch an "Odyssey" version of Elite?
I'd really like an answer to this too FD.

Elite does the cockpit VR experience so well and honestly I only have a VR headset because of Elite.

When you've already got that working please don't deny atmospherics to VR, surely there's a way of barring VR from FPS without denying atmospherics (and terrain improvements) ?

Will this mean we can go around in our owned ships on foot?
All currently available and flyable ship interiors are ready for this or will be by launch?
Will these ship interiors be functional, or just cosmetics?
Will we be able to accommodate other players on our ships without telepresence?
Will we be able to enter/exit our SRVs while on the surface of a planet?
Will there be more types of SRVs?

Or will this be a completely separate experience from the already existing ones?
Meaning I won't be able to stand up from my ship's pilot seat and move around in my ship, srv, etc.?

Not understanding something, generally isn't a good beginning of claiming you're right.

I bought this game because VR. That is absolutely the one and only reason I play ED. Without VR I simply wouldn't be interested in playing. I love the game in VR. It's better than any other computer game I have played since I started in the late 1970's. I also know how much work is going into making a game like this, having done 3D modelling and animation for more than 30 years.

Still, without VR this is just another game, and you can feed pigs with those.
Completely agree, this will be just another fps/tps competing with the big players that have been doing this for decades. I bought the game because of VR, stayed with it for years because of VR and will now drop it because of the lack of VR. But I guess there are not enough VR players to bother them.

Better to wait for the official version from Frontier. They have only put out a teaser at the moment.

Greetings Commanders,

Thank you for your overwhelmingly positive response to the announcement of Elite Dangerous: Odyssey. We’ve been really excited to share this and it’s amazing to see that you all feel the same way!

This is just the beginning and we will be sharing more details and information in the coming months that you can look forward to.

We’re seeing all your streams, videos, posts and questions and, today, we wanted to answer a few for you straight away:

Is Elite Dangerous: Odyssey coming to VR?

Currently, Elite Dangerous: Odyssey will not be VR-compatible at launch. We’re big fans of VR and we are truly proud of the amazing experience that we currently offer in Elite Dangerous. However, the new gameplay, mechanics and features that will be introduced with Elite Dangerous: Odyssey means that we had to re-examine if we could deliver that same experience without compromise, which, for launch, means Odyssey will not be VR-compatible.

Will there be Base Building in Elite Dangerous: Odyssey?
Base building is not currently on the roadmap for Elite Dangerous, however we have plenty of new features planned instead such as on-foot exploration, new planetary tech, social hubs, combat as well as more to be shared later on! We’re looking to put our best foot forward with Odyssey and if you’d like an overview of what to expect, you can check out the website or Steam page.

Will Elite Dangerous: Odyssey be included in my Lifetime Expansion Pass?
While Elite Dangerous: Odyssey is a paid expansion, we're happy to confirm that yes, this expansion will absolutely be included in the Lifetime Expansion Pass for free.

Stay Safe, Commanders o7
Hi Tim, so can VR players perhaps expect the other enhancements such as the atmospheric landings, Ice Worlds, upgraded graphics, new SRVs etc. I mean to the onboard gameplay.

I invested a lot of money recently for the headset and new PC just to be able to play Elite in VR. I'm feeling kind of sidelined to be honest.

Thanks, have a good day.

(although I understand that getting a seamless space game/FPS with different controls/movement might be very tricky to implement).
X: Rebirth VR sends its regards. It might not be as scale-ambitious as Elite, but it's a good VR title which has these things working. Also seamless switching from VR mode to 2d mode and controls when you take your headset off.

Well no support for VR in Odyssey is a huge disappointment. I have two VR setups for Elite and enjoyed many hours with my kid in VR, spent 100s in the Frontier Store. I suppose they are willing to just lose a part of their loyal fan base over this. It's a real shame. Looking at it now, it is probably going to feel like two separate games to me, and I have loads of cracking first person shooters that I can turn too on flat screens if that is the type of game I'm looking for. There is so much competition in that space already, will be interesting to see how it works out for Frontier. Elite containing VR mechanics like Half Life Alyx or Lone Echo was too difficult to do I suppose.

bad statistic.
you use the average adoption of VR among all players and translated to ED player base.
Your reasoning is fault. Surely the amount of ED players using VR is much more high than that.
As you can see if you attend some VR forum or sites, most VR users have bought ED only because it has VR in it, otherwise they would have pass.
Uhmmm ... Read again, this was my point.

I would like to see a bit more clarification on some of the statements for VR use in Odyssey.

I play in VR and for the past three years my Elite: Dangerous stream has been the most watched on Twitch. Since keeping track in a optional survey in 2018, over 320 people have bought over 400 VR headsets because of asking questions about VR and many play Elite: Dangerous because of seeing it on my stream.

Can any portion of Odyssey be played in VR, or is it just the on-foot parts that do not have it?

What is the standard gameplay loop for this? Do we select to switch to on foot, get a notification to take the headset off and then when we decide to get back in the ship, vice-versa and put the headset back on as seamless as we can?

Right now if I switch to flat screen, and then back to VR, it resets my screen res to a 1280x768 VR mirror window every time, will this be changed because it has been a bug fix request since the beginning in 2014, and has yet to be changes, will it be changing back and forth but do it seamlessly between VR and non-VR on foot gameplay and so I dont have to reset my stream window back to full screen each time for my viewers?

Is there a reason for possibly not having it enabled, but with a warning for those that might not be able to deal with VR sickness, but tie the aiming reticule to head-look like the planetary probe launcher used to do in beta 1 of the 3.3 update before that was also removed?

Would be great it Odyssey works in the manner you suggest. I could live with that for that start and woudl hope that in a second release the switch is no longer from VR to flat but from seated to standing and have teleportation and locomotion like in any good VR game.
Personally I’d rather have the atmos planets without the space legs. It’s the perfect opportunity to refresh the cobra engine to take into account new developments in graphics card functions (DLSS, VRSS, VR SLI and dare I say it Raytracing).
This game for me is a flight trading simulation and FDev have got it spot on in this regard.
Because of all the pressure from the community we are now getting what looks like an FPS... this is very disappointing. No offence to the dev team, but attempting to pull off an FPS game that is on par with the other AAA FPS titles out there is a big ask.
For me, I purchased the LEP whilst I was on Mac... I moved to pc, then saw the light and was blown away by VR. I’ve upgraded my pc multiple times to improve ED in VR and have now got a cockpit setup with HOTAS, RTX2080 etc.
I very rarely play any other games, but when I do 80-90% are in VR.
I totally understand that the VR FPS elements are not really compatible with the guys playing in 2D, however please please please enable VR in Odyssey but restrict our ability to go into FPS mode.
Since the announcement of upgraded graphics for ice planets and the wait for the new era, I think I speak for every VR ED user when I state that not giving us the potential to land on a planet with atmospheres after the extensive investment of time and money (In many cases thousands of £s & $s) that has been languished on ED is a bitter pill to swallow.
Elite Dangerous is the sole reason many of us have VR...
I would gladly pay for another LEP for decent VR support(I really don’t care for the “legs”).

I 100% agree to all you said.

Agreed with all but the highlighted: I don't get what you mean. Basically it's what an FPS is: a cam with a hud and a weapon in the field of view and a locomotion speed and limitations based upon human body's own limitations + any addition required by the gamedesign chosen (fast or realistic, crawling/climbing, jetpack...)

Yes, I understand you and that highlighted fragment. I will try to better explain my way of thinking:

Ship and SRV are just machines. I'm expecting different 'feeling' of my person walking around and doing stuff. Not only putting a camera inside my helmet or rifle scope and changing 3D model from SRV to commander. I'm expecting some new animations and interactions like: fatigue, deep breathing, maybe steam settling on the helmet's glass, the need to rest, wiping the helmet's glass, etc.
One of the best feeling of that kind of things, in my opinion, was in Metro: Last Light. When your mask filter was running out, your character breathed heavier and then suffering suffocating. The filter change was combined with a timer on your watch and had its animation. The mask glass could break. Also water could splash on it and you had to wipe it with your hand, which also looked great.
