ANNOUNCEMENT Elite Dangerous: Odyssey Announcement

No idea, didn't play the alpha, but I did buy the commercial release in jan 2015 when it was only released in December 2014, and there was no VR support, there wasn't even commercially available VR hardware, all that was availble was the Occulus Rift DK2 "developers" kit that cost over £600.

OCR support was patched into the comercial release sometime during 2015, but i can assure you there was no general release for it at launch or Q1 2015, that i know of. But i didnt have any hardware then so it might have been avaiable as a back door developer hack.

TBH it was still a bit of a developer hack to get it to work well in 2016 when i bought my 2nd hand OCR DK2 set off ebay. Any the change from Windows 7 to 8.1 and 10 was big issues with getting ED VR working too.

It certainly wasn't a "menu" option -plug and play in 2014/early 2015 like it is now.

The game has supported VR from the beginning. The beginning was when VR was only available as dev kits, and you had to hack around to get it working. 10% of alpha players were using VR.

im pretty much certain that the new Planetary tech and graphical upgrades are going to be integrated to the base game, throughout all expansions. they cannot restrict those things to only the DLC since they involve changes to the engine itself. cannot have an expansion running on a different engine than it's original base game. they are linked. so that should be some good news, for people who aren't buying odyssey. being disapointed about lack of VR support is one thing. but draging it for over 70 pages or more, in a thread about an announcement of an entire new expansion coming out, is another thing entirely.

I'm fine with whatever anyone wants to talk about, feel free to discuss anything and theorycraft away. The only thing we know about the update is there will be some form of walking on planets and there won't be VR support "at launch", so feel free to expound upon either of those or talk about stuff ya hopes makes it in.

No VR makes the update a nonstarter and I won't buy it, so I'm letting Frontier know, as are others. VR players will likely let Frontier know about this problem the rest of the way even when Fdev actually gives us more info about the update.

I imagine once they announce that there's no interior modeling inside the ships for us to walk around in, the forums will have more long unavoidable (disappointed) conversations about that as well (if the earlier reports that a dev said it wasn't coming and then the comment was deleted is accurate, at least-- I didn't see it with my own eyes). It has been a LONG time since we had a real update, people have stuck around on faith, and the legs portion is mostly a mystery for now and the most confirmed thing is VR not being supported. Not a lot else to discuss or be happy about with that.

What I was getting at is that there are obvious upgrades looking at the trailer. Will any of the enhancements carry over to the current game. I'm just not bothered about running about shooting stuff. To me it's a space flight sim with the ability to land on planets.
Iirc there were base game updates after horizons so potentially there could be an graphics engine update not associated with the paid portion of the dlc, but this is mere speculation

And in the interview/demo with Scott Manley Braben explicitly stated that 10% of the players have them at that time. That's telling something. In this vid you can also see a VRgin reacting to VR for the first time - priceless even with British composure.

I saw your list of games and thanks for putting it up, but I am a niche game player. Flight Sim and Space Combat Junkie. Played the original Elite, all the Wing Commander series, X Wing/Tie Fighter Series, Freespace etc. Was looking for a new space game to get into and considered No Mans Sky and Star Citizen and opted for Elite after watching some videos. I work away a lot and play ED on my gaming laptop. I play DCS At home on main PC with TM Warthog HOTAS and pedals. Was thinking a VR Headset is not to much extra to carry around, but couldn’t bring all the kit for DCS. I might still get the VR for DCS, but less incentive now.

Flight sims: XPlane-11 also has vr support, IL-2 has VR support, War Thunder has VR support out of the top of my head.
Oh, just found this:
As for carrying things - Oculus Quest + Link Cable is a very interesting proposition although idk if it works with DCS, you'd need to check on Eagle Dynamics' forums. It's also standalone so you can enjoy a nice library of VR games on the go, too. Onward is being ported to Quest currently for example. There are also WMR solutions with inside-out tracking like Oculus' ones, most notably HP Reverb.

I also play DCS and while there are some deficiencies with the engine and resolution (the latter can be overcome with hp reverb), I wouldn't ever trade it for 2d 4k (I tried). The disconnection between playing pancake and actually being inside a fighter jet maneouvering is surreal (pardon the pun). Oh and aerial refuelling where you can see the actual depth is very nice. If you have any further questions (or anyone who wants to get into VR actually) feel free to shot me a pm.

For those who want to walk around the ship, what is the proposed gameplay purpose of this? Other than "it sounds cool".

You're not being excluded. You are being denied the opportunity to play the game in the way you want to. You can still play if you want.

I get that people are upset, but hyperbole doesn't help the cause.

It is less hyperbolic than it seems. A popular comparison that non-vr players use when trying to conceptualize vr gameplay is to think of it as the same class of experience as Elite with a 3D tv or head tracking, or a giant multi-monitor display, but maybe just a little better. That is, they think of VR as something that 'enhances' the experience of playing flat screen Elite Dangerous. This is understandable, but inaccurate in an important way.

If playing Elite Dangerous on flat screen is like reading a book, then the 'enhancement' class of experiences is like reading the 'deluxe anniversary' version of The Chronicles of Narnia, with glossy pages and lenticular illustrations that move when you move your head. VR is like stepping into the Wardrobe, and coming out with your feet on the snow covered ground of Narnia.

Whether by design or by accident, Frontier's VR implementation manages to accomplish what so many other VR implementations of flat screen games have tried and failed to do, i.e. create an emergent experience that is so much more than the sum of its parts. VR does not enhance Elite Dangerous; it transforms it. The game becomes something different when played in VR, and for many that emergent experience defines their version of Elite Dangerous. For this reason, ED and EDVR are not interchangeable for many.

So yes, when Odyssey launches ED flat screen will still be available, and that is great, but the VR community has lost something valuable and important to us, and I think that it is okay for people to be sad about that.

I doubt it. You need a whacky doo computer to run it, I only have a laptop.
Not really.

What? CMDRs being upset in the thread that gave them a reason to be upset? What voodoo magic is this?

We anderstand your frustrations VR users, but please do realise that there is way more important things to discuss here aswell. like what sort of content are we getting? it's a little bit selfish of you guys, to keep hammering about this for 70 pages, yelling about how you're only given 1 rather than 2 options with wich to experience the game. while the massive majority of the rest of us only have 1 to begin with.

Lol sorry you don't have VR? And, again, someone else needs reminding, to a lot of CMDRS Elite Dangerous is a VR game. They bought it through VR only stores and for years have played it in VR. The new update, is not in VR, therefore, VR users who only bought Elite because its in VR are left out.

imagine being served a meal in a restaurant, and you're yelling about lack of forks, and only spoons are given, while not knowing what the meal actually is to begin with. NO FORK NO BUY, before even opening the lid on the meal itself, is what you all guys sound like in this thread. maybe let's unpack the meal first? see what it has to offer? then we look at what we gonna eat it with later. just a thought.

I'm going to have to ask for your metaphor card. That's a pretty big false equivalency.
