Because it was a quick hack that worked, and you can see Braben talking about it in the vids @Jay Le Chardon linked somewhere earlier in the thread.

Not sure about a quick hack that worked, but he did post an interview: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threa...sey-announcement.546389/page-125#post-8499184

Edit: I think I know where you're coming from now regarding the video. It was probably one of these:

You don't understand because you're new around here probably, judging from join date. I have been waiting on this expansion since at least 2016. Bloody 5 years to be more exact. So don't act so surprised if I consider that I have given frontier enough bloody time as I reasonably can. People with LE pass have been waiting since 2014. Now we're being EXCLUDED from this update, like so.

You're not being excluded. You are being denied the opportunity to play the game in the way you want to. You can still play if you want.

I get that people are upset, but hyperbole doesn't help the cause.

Vote with your wallet then. don't buy Odyssey until it has VR support, and let Fdev know, whenever you can. After the initial 6 months of sales exhaust those that can live without VR, they will want to keep sales going, and if say 25% of the ED / EDH playerdase wont buy EDO , because they want VR support, then there will be a commercial decision made. But you will probably get good inship / space VR but crap FPS implementation.

I have VR via a old Oculus Rift DK2 720p set 2nd hand from 2016. but I haven't used it since July 2016 when I moved house, it's still in a box in the loft somewhere. I did really enjoy EDH VR but using a Siatek Cyborg Evo Joystick and keyboard it's "difficult" with VR headsets, you really need to add voice control systems not to break the immersion.

But as a 2015 lifetime pass holder I will get EDO free anyway, and all my playing since 2017 has been 2k 26" screen and I am ok with that. I may dig out the OR DK2 at some point , but I wont upgrade it to a decent modern VR set until EDO has VR support, but it wont stop me from playing the game. Anyway they have now said ED and EDH will retain VR support, so it's onlt the new EDO content you wont have, no one is taking away you current ED VR experience.
The problem I see is they will focus new features on the new game so the existing game will stay as is with fleet carriers being the last new thing. It will stagnate. I play the game a lot in preparation of the next development so I've been mining like hell to get enough money to buy and fuel my fleet carrier. If you take away new features and development horizons will get old very quickly. If they say they will continue to develop horizons and add new content then great but does anyone think they will?

Perhaps a little empathy for those who have been excluded from Odyssey with their chosen method of playing ED without warning or explanation?

I empathise. But functionality was pointlessly removed from the 3.3 update with no benefit to anyone, here something new to everyone will not (inittially?) have extra functionality that seems quite tricky to integrate into what has so far been a game where the player avatar is a vehicle.

People are not losing out, they just aren't getting as much extra as they were hoping for. I empathise, I am sympathetic, but as far as we are aware no existing functionality is being removed as was the case with the old discovery modules.

So I can also understand why some other contributors are taking the 'well tough' stance, because FDev have at least provided some prompt justification this time.

JUST DON'T BUY ODYSSEY IF IT DOESN'T SUPPORT THE HARDWARE YOU WANT IT TO.

If Odyssey is technically a separate game, then I think you are almost certainly correct. All the dev effort would transfer to the new code.

Telling us VR users to be happy with what we have is not helping.

I'm not telling you to be happy with your lot, i'm saying vote with your wallet, it's the only good bargaining chip you have. Look it at from my perspective, when i bought ED in Jan 2015 there was no VR, was no Horizions, half as many ships, no lucrative way to earn credits, we didnt even have limpets as miners , it was manual scooping!

I still put down £120 for a lifetime pass because i was an keen BBC micro player of elite in the mid 80's. It's now 5 years on and i still havent had anywhere near VFM from my lifetime pass, do you know know the only perk i have? Jet Black Paintjob for any ship, so if you see a jet black Drake class F/C next week you will know who owns it!!

But I don't spend every waking minute posting on forum after forum how "stiffed" i was helping FD get off the ground after the kickstarter money ran out, and what i have for my money anyone can now buy for £40.

Jesh!

When I started playing Elite in VR I thought that after that experience "there was no going back", and now with the announcement of Odyssey without VR clearly FD has taken a clear step back for those who think like me.
From a project / business point of view where it competes with "others", this decision gives this competition, which already has perfectly developed legs and atmospheric planets, a golden opportunity.
I don't think not including VR was very smart.
Except the competition is a mess, if you mean Star Citizen. And I wouldn’t hold your breath for VR in SC, assuming that they ever finish it, VR is promised after the full game is released. 6 years in and still just a buggy alpha release!

I am voting with my wallet. Was considering buying a VR headset to play ED. Will save myself the money now!

I hit the like button again  Anyway, I already have the Lifetime Pass so this is paid for. They have taken away the VR functionality of the game. I have been playing the game this way since it was introduced 6 years ago. Don't tell me to not buy something I have already paid for.
