VR support 'not at launch' for Odyssey

I'll be getting this for 'free' (lifetime updates), but I won;t be playing it... I bought VR to play Elite... I do not care about space legs, I do care about flying space ships, space legs is not what I kick started this game for, I am still waiting for the stuff they promised in 2014, stop trying to compete with Star Citizen and fix the bugs, first!

It won't be motion sickness that FD are struggling with. (Imagine any company having the gall to say, "Soz VR users. No VR for you because some of you may feel sick")

It's effects that are 2d; without some form of depth buffer, you can't render in 3d.

I used to play games using 3d vision until nvidia killed it. It's surprising how many elements in games are actually rendered in the 2d plane. E. G. Dust clouds, explosions and the like.

I reckon that's the case with odyssey.
That would mean we have no chance of landing on atmospherics in VR :(

I watched the stream, they mentioned that they will clarify with the devs. No FPS or yet to be announced Odessey content in VR is fine, many want to know about backwards compatibility, planetary tech, flying through atmospheres in VR.

The base game still receives visual updates. I have a feeling the FPS stuff is bolted on like SRV gameplay.
Check out their announcement thread on this forum. They confirm that Odessey will not support VR at launch. They may bolt it on later I suppose, but unless some of the enhanced visuals make it down into Horizons then I think they will have lost most VR players by then.

I have a reasonably strong VR head. Within ED, the only VR nausea I've had is with the violent manoeuvres that the docking computer performs (I rarely use automatic docking btw... so pls don't criticise me for mentioning that!).

Ah, so it's not just me, then. I've not had motion sickness in my Elite ship, but when playing through the tutorial to get used to the transition to VR without risking a rebuy the only thing that gave me the motion wibblies was the autopilot starting to spin me for docking. I think it's like how passengers can get car sick, but as a driver your brain anticipates it because you're turning the wheel yourself.

Not necessarily.

You may have seen that thread that removes some of the details like window smudges and supercruise lines. That tool was created by 3d vision users.

Some effects are 2d in which case you're screwed but others are just borked and can be fixed.

Push come shove, if it's some cool new effect that is causing issues, I would be happy if they were disabled.

I'm currently rendering an image that has clouds made up of lot of 2D planes cleverly arranged to look like 3D objects, in an animation you could have the object point at the camera which is what they currently do with the dust clouds you get after exploding an asteroid.

Also the problem you describe is not exclusive to VR is a given in all games that allow you to move freely within a 3D space, it might be slightly more pronounced in VR but still...

Actually it's probably down to the fact you have no control over the movement, it's why the screen fades to black once your SRV starts tumbling.

Sure. That's a bill board. They still have depth information. Elite used the same effects in the overheating smoke, entrance smoke, deepcore mining explosions. They are all 2d just rendered in 3d

I'm talking about different effects

For example in Total War. The gunshot flares, just one of many examples, are rendered in the 2d plane so when playing in stereoscopic 3d it is rendered on the screen instead of at depth. Unit icons, mouse pointers are also classic 2d criminals

Many of these classic elements (unit icons, mouse cursor) in ED however are rendered at depth. Which makes me think it will be something like effects that are applied on top of in game assets, like muzzle flairs.

Ok guys. Time has finally come for my first and only Forumpost in 36 years.
I am really enraged for u guys killing my Nr1 VR-game ever since! I dont need spacelegs if u cant provide VR support for it. No need to challenge No man skies or StarCitizen with this Spacelegs rubbish. I want ED back as it has ever been since 1984. A spacecraft simulator. This is the wrong direction, not only for me but for a handful of friends who only play this fantastic long time motivated game in VR. Let me shed my tears a little more: Elite is THE most immersive and mature space game that is out there. I love the fact that its unforgivingly difficult, no red arrows pointing your way to the next treaure chest. There is no goal to reach, just explore, min-max ur ships and reflect about life itself when roaming lonely orbits. There were countless hours just co-piloting on a friends ship to relax and enjoy the immersion.

New DLC with new content? I like.
New engine with fancy features that can finally provide Antialiasing? I like.
No VR? God lord u broke my heart. The pain is real.

I dont even need tracked vr-controllers support. I am fine with my Hotas. I might even add a gamepad if its needed like in Subnautica. Just give me Stereo Vision!

You can turn that off in options if you want to ensure you don't get motion sickness. :D I turned it off on my trek around Kumay as I needed to see where I was tumbling. Haven't turned it on again since. Though on particularly nasty tumbles, I do sometimes close my eyes as it makes my head spin too!

totally agreeing.... stop VR for the next era the game will be a fail

It’s all so terribly tragic, I suppose it’s worth waiting for the new dev diaries for additional information. But I’m doubting VR will come to an FPS version of this game, the lag will get you killed.
On a more positive note... At least it’s taken away the thought of how useless fleet carriers are. ... mostly

Flimley

Can anyone point me to any quote issued by FD in the announcement or in the stream from yersterday that landing/walking on planets with atmosphere will be possible in Odyssey? Any at all? Beside the "in-engine" video released?
I really think that people are reading way to much into that PRE ALPHA footage. I hope I'm wrong.
Why exactly wouldn't they include the landing/walking on planets with atmosphere in the actual announcement, without any kind of interpretation. Just directly so people would know for sure.
Why wouldn't they want to share that part particularly, that that worked on for so long and are proud of it?
Something is fishy here.

I think that the new planetary vistas are referring to the new terrain generation and bases/hubs on planets.

If that's the case then them not supporting vr for the fps part is the least of my concerns.

Well, that's too bad. I am probably going to test Odyssey since I have the lifetime expansion pass, but probably will play mainly Horizons since VR is just so awsome. I can understand that it is not a mainstream feature, but am still really disappointed.
