I get where you are coming from. I personally do not own a vr unit at all. But I do eyeball them on occasion. But I am also sitting in front of a high performance gaming monitor. The current trouble with the VR market isn't just support from vendors such as Elite Dangerous. It is also physical limitations on the architecture. That being my personal eyesight requirements per eye versus the distance for the focal point. Just comparing brands against each other you see they do not have a conformity in agreement.View attachment 175608
VR is a significant part of my day job, so I follow all the major web publications. Not happy to come across a big headline like this.
In general B2B VR is doing great, it just doesn't have the publicity. Some people will keep barking "VR is dead/dying" or "VR is a gimmick" and I'm pretty chill about it, people are just ignorant and it's understandable. It's simply not on their radar so they draw conclusions from what data they have.
But for consumer VR to ever become mainstream (as much as it ever will, which I assume is going to be something similar to HOTAS -- definitely not for every home, but stable and profitable), we need major players joining in, not bailing out. And I have little reason to consider this anything but bailing out.
"we've supported VR for seven years, now we'll remove it for a while from the new content, just so we can put it back in later."

Second you have a different challenge. Currently the game will not have VR removed from it as far as I am aware. The important point here is to realize they have not shown anything from with in the cockpit with this new visual system. This is more likely going to be an addon experience. For instance we don't move from the cockpit to the SRV and then exit the ship. We appear in the SRV and drop down. It is the FPS system that will not support VR at launch because that still needs development. They did not say it wouldn't be supported. It will just take them time to get it feeling right. You might get the chance to participate in a beta just for that.
They have a good track record of getting the in ship feel for VR where it needed to be. I have not seen anyone creating threads about VR in Elite and becoming violently sick. If they do translate into a new system. I am fairly certain 98% of those values should all be relevant even to a new engine. The in game head movements versus the engine reacting to that shouldn't change. So it really should just be down to getting running as a person feeling right so you don't end up sick or causing headaches.
Headaches and nausea have been the two major sick factors I have read about regarding VR.
I just would like to add that I do not believe VR is a gimmick at all. There is tons of proof that these systems have incredible value. We currently use very expensive Simulators across the world for training licensed pilots, to even race car drivers that go around corners at over 200 miles per hour. If they don't know the next turn is only 50 feet away they can't prepare for it ahead of time. VR would reduce the cost dramatically and eventually even provide a better experience for operation. VR could enable a Dr to perform a practice surgery hundreds of times before ever cutting into someone. Including the ability to run a mock simulation with random potential problems to train how to react in an emergency. What to focus on, what to ignore, and what you didn't do that could of had a better resolution. These are all potentials through VR. So, totally not a gimmick.
On the other hand. 3D Television systems and the filming systems used are really more gimmick than purpose. The systems used in televisions are already known to have flaws with the way people see. So a decent portion of people have trouble just viewing it. You have to sit in a confined viewing point and remain in a specific alignment. It is really difficult to find 3d films that try to utilize everything into the 3d immersive experience. Instead you might have certain things pushed into the 3d perspective while a lot of the rest of the details are not pushed. To me, these are the qualities I would relate to being a gimmick.
