VR is a significant part of my day job, so I follow all the major web publications. Not happy to come across a big headline like this.

In general B2B VR is doing great, it just doesn't have the publicity. Some people will keep barking "VR is dead/dying" or "VR is a gimmick" and I'm pretty chill about it, people are just ignorant and it's understandable. It's simply not on their radar so they draw conclusions from what data they have.

But for consumer VR to ever become mainstream (as much as it ever will, which I assume is going to be something similar to HOTAS -- definitely not for every home, but stable and profitable), we need major players joining in, not bailing out. And I have little reason to consider this anything but bailing out.

"we've supported VR for seven years, now we'll remove it for a while from the new content, just so we can put it back in later."

🤔
I get where you are coming from. I personally do not own a vr unit at all. But I do eyeball them on occasion. But I am also sitting in front of a high performance gaming monitor. The current trouble with the VR market isn't just support from vendors such as Elite Dangerous. It is also physical limitations on the architecture. That being my personal eyesight requirements per eye versus the distance for the focal point. Just comparing brands against each other you see they do not have a conformity in agreement.

Second you have a different challenge. Currently the game will not have VR removed from it as far as I am aware. The important point here is to realize they have not shown anything from with in the cockpit with this new visual system. This is more likely going to be an addon experience. For instance we don't move from the cockpit to the SRV and then exit the ship. We appear in the SRV and drop down. It is the FPS system that will not support VR at launch because that still needs development. They did not say it wouldn't be supported. It will just take them time to get it feeling right. You might get the chance to participate in a beta just for that.

They have a good track record of getting the in ship feel for VR where it needed to be. I have not seen anyone creating threads about VR in Elite and becoming violently sick. If they do translate into a new system. I am fairly certain 98% of those values should all be relevant even to a new engine. The in game head movements versus the engine reacting to that shouldn't change. So it really should just be down to getting running as a person feeling right so you don't end up sick or causing headaches.

Headaches and nausea have been the two major sick factors I have read about regarding VR.

I just would like to add that I do not believe VR is a gimmick at all. There is tons of proof that these systems have incredible value. We currently use very expensive Simulators across the world for training licensed pilots, to even race car drivers that go around corners at over 200 miles per hour. If they don't know the next turn is only 50 feet away they can't prepare for it ahead of time. VR would reduce the cost dramatically and eventually even provide a better experience for operation. VR could enable a Dr to perform a practice surgery hundreds of times before ever cutting into someone. Including the ability to run a mock simulation with random potential problems to train how to react in an emergency. What to focus on, what to ignore, and what you didn't do that could of had a better resolution. These are all potentials through VR. So, totally not a gimmick.

On the other hand. 3D Television systems and the filming systems used are really more gimmick than purpose. The systems used in televisions are already known to have flaws with the way people see. So a decent portion of people have trouble just viewing it. You have to sit in a confined viewing point and remain in a specific alignment. It is really difficult to find 3d films that try to utilize everything into the 3d immersive experience. Instead you might have certain things pushed into the 3d perspective while a lot of the rest of the details are not pushed. To me, these are the qualities I would relate to being a gimmick.

I'm sure its been said before, but I really hope the expansion comes with ship interiors. Above all else I'd love to see that feature, even if it is rudimentary. Just the ability to go explore the ship and see your modules is plenty interesting for me, and any new gameplay there would be gravy.

I want to join my voice with others.

I could write a lot about the ongoing situation with VR. Like so many, I’m very disappointed. I was so exited almost to tears to see finally this new trailer for the future content. Soon after that Frontier announcement about VR was a crushing new.

I have just recently been finally able to buy a new rig and soon after a Oculus Rift S just to play my favorite game for what it was made for, like so many were saying: VR. And oh boy it is truly an exceptional experience!

Like many have pointed out, game like NMS, Skytim, Alyx and others titles can handle pretty well the FPS aspect of the game. I play myself Obduction (a game from Cyan the maker of Myst) in full smooth movement style. I play with a controller and I have adapted very quickly to motion. It’s even less intense as SRV…

I fear that frontier say that they will not support VR at lunch just to soften the pain. For me Frontier always represented vision, VR being one of them.

I could really argue more, but I know I’m not alone feeling let down. Contrary to some people here saying that the VR player base is a minority, I really believe it’s not an insignificant minority. We are many here saying the same thing.

I listen time to time to Malic_VR on Twitch. This guy really communicate the passion for Elite Dangerous like no one. I feel it really sad that you decided to make sacrifice in my opinion in the wrong thing…

The community wanted atmospheric planet and space legs and it seem we will have both. Not having that on VR would really be a miss opportunity.

We still don’t know if we would be able to walk in our ships, which according to the trailer doesn’t seem to be the case. This is one of the most anticipated feature.

Please Frontier, we ask you to reconsider working on making Odyssey VR compatible at launch because other have done it and I’m sure you can do it.

Stephen said yesterday in the live Twitch that he read our comments here. I think all commander here need to continue expressing their wishes and needs. Sometime this can make things change.

Thank you.:alien:
Take Care Everyone.
Sorry for my English

It's really dissapointing that VR won't be supported.

That said, I can understand the reasoning.

However, flying, and driving in VR is still an amazing way to play ED. It's still going to be my preference when flying. If there was some way to toggle between VR and pancake from in game, that would be really nice. Unfortunately there is probably a bunch of reasons that won't happen. And for VR players used to the amazing immersion of VR, playing pancake is probably going to be a sad experience, regardless.

I'm curious though, are we going to be limited to what planets we can 'run' around on? No ELW, or WW yet I get it, but what about gravity? Are we going to be able to leap large distances on low G worlds? Are we going to need exo-skeleton suits on high G worlds? Are we only going to be able to run around on a small spectrum of worlds within a small G range? Or are we just going to have magic suits that decrease/increase the effects of gravity to 1G on any planet?!

I'm going to guess magic suits. Are bullets going to have decreased range on high G worlds? Or will they be magical too?

150 pages of the same moaning about VR. If you're gonna keep whining about it, at least bring something new to the discussion. I don't need to sift through 150 pages of the same "waaaaaa no VR no BUY" comments.

Hate to dissapoint, but we're gonna do 15 000 pages of "moaning" if that's what it takes to get them to give us a DEFINITE answer about VR support for Odyssey after launch.

They are developing the dlc, so until they finish the dlc, the can't work in the port of VR. When that moment comes, the can say you if its easy work and they will have in months, or is hard work and will drop in years. Until they don't finish the dlc, they can't answer about how long will take the VR port.

So this update will include Atmosphere landings?

We don't know. They don't specifically mention it. However, the blue outline of the planet in the trailer has been interpreted as such. It has also been interpreted as simply a shader. It's possible if there are atmospheric landings it could be as limited as landings initially were. Without actual information, as great and due as it would be, I would not get my hopes up.

I've received way more than my money's worth from this game and Elite in VR is phenomenal. While I plan to buy Odyssey, I hope to primarily play in VR. I hope switching to 2d Odyssey will be easy and only needed for FPS game play on foot. I hope atmospheric planets will be available in Horizons- even if I won't be able to leave my ship on foot without logging out and then into 2d Odyssey.

I've tried VR in ED. It's amazing. Or it would be if they could find a way to reduce the weight of the sets to mere ounces and find a way so it's not so warm while wearing a headset. For VR to really take off, we're going to need something that connects at a neural level like the interface in the Black Mirror episode "The Callister".. These headsets just aren't going to cut it.
hi, i don't have this pb with my HP reverb. (2160x2160 px max). No warm and weight <500g. Very cool headset for me.

Adding myself to the list of people that's sad that Frontier chose to drop support for VR. I phrase it that way given what other "at launch" statements turned out to mean.

I played on my monitor for about 2 nights during beta when some of the builds only had one eye working in VR. The rest of the time I've played in VR starting with a DK2 up to the Index. The game is only worth it to me in VR. I don't need the on foot portions to work in VR at launch, if they want to delay that go for it, but full ship and SRV VR support on atmospheric planets with the new visuals should be there from day one.

Devastated. "flat odyssey" should be the title. Like waiting two years to see your favourite band live in concert only to be told you'll have to watch it at home on your TV in the ambience of your lounge room. Players spending thousands on VR rigs, expensive VR headsets, RTX cards, CPUs, X56 controls, cockpits etc to play the only VR space sim available which is now 2D. Fabulous. The only reason many are playing Elite is because its VR otherwise we'd be playing star citizen or any other countless FPS flat games. At a time when VR is getting great headsets with higher resolutions. Such an irony that a game that revolutionized the gaming world in 1984 with 3D, now nearly 40 years later is reverting to 2D. So uninspiring. 😞

Having this thing on my face for hours gives me nightmares.
I don’t need to have a VR experience to know that I don’t want to stick a headset (even ultra light) on my face for hours.
But way to hot and tiring to boot
Admittedly after a few hours you want to scratch the skin of your face.

The Index is very comfortable. I can practically don it on and off like a baseball cap. And as much as I am ashamed to admit, I did fell asleep in VR more than a few times getting bored to death on long supercruise boredom highways in Elite while playing late at night 😂
