ANNOUNCEMENT Elite Dangerous: Odyssey Announcement

I just wanted to say that Frontier really nailed the name. It's a thought I'd had more than once, it isn't as though they could call it Elite Feet, so how do you name a first person expansion? Elite:Walk-About? No, that's awful. When it zoomed through the S and you see the word Odyssey I was like "Oh that is such a good name". So congrats to someone at Frontier, you nailed it.
Funny, that was something I thought as well. There had been some discussion before on the forums about possible names I remember, but I could never think what might work. Odyssey is pretty good ...

They have reduced the weight. When was the last time you tried one. You seem out of touch with the technology.
They did reduce the weight but it's still a sauna for your eyeballs. I love vr and Elite is what got me into it, but the tech is far from perfect in the comfort perspective. It's really the least-addressed area of new development. Foveated this and Retina that, but play Beat Saber in a Rift S and I think you'll agree, it has room to grow.

Don't want to wade into this vr debate because it would be picking the one thing I'm not happy about and focusing on it when there is so much that I am happy about. I guess you could say my excitement is through the stratosphere! (Get it? It's.... It's an atmosphere joke.)

Am not sure what NMS could do better wrt vr support. It's great imo and I would bite your arm off (figuratively) for that kind of support for odyssey
I haven't played NMS for probably 6 months, is there actually combat between players? I mean I know there's now supposed to be multiplayer. I wonder how it works with the different movement options? Do people next to you just disappear and rematerialise over there lol?

Is this you?

Lol, reminds me of CeBit 1992 where you could do your first steps in a Cyberspace suit. Unfortunately, I missed that chance, as I was there for evaluating the NeXT workstation and the queue was just too long. But it was not a headset only, but a suit. With hand controllers of sorts (gloves actually), and you could walk around guided by personnel, exploring a virtual light grid with cubes and triangles and such. Those were the days.

O7,
🙃

It depends on how immersed I am.
When I am in a properly active session, I tend to not percieve the discomfort, once I'm in a oassive session, it gets uncomfortable pretty quickly.

Not a great fan of MNS but when I have played it the players land and get out of their ships in real time. You see lots of them in the stations, upgrading, getting missions and whatnot. Never tried to shoot anyone though.

Is Elite Dangerous: Odyssey coming to VR?

Currently, Elite Dangerous: Odyssey will not be VR-compatible at launch. We’re big fans of VR and we are truly proud of the amazing experience that we currently offer in Elite Dangerous. However, the new gameplay, mechanics and features that will be introduced with Elite Dangerous: Odyssey means that we had to re-examine if we could deliver that same experience without compromise, which, for launch, means Odyssey will not be VR-compatible.
VR is the only thing that keeps me occasionally coming back to Elite. No VR = no purchase from me.

I have to say I'm disappointed about no VR.
I'm in the minority, but I prefer seated VR with non-vr controls for long sessions. I don't want long sessions standing for any game. Keeping VR with standard 2D controls should, I would think, be easier to implement and is in keeping with the current implementation.

You are not alone friend. My confined PC space (by choice) means seated only.

No idea mate I don't PvP sorry. You can tell VR players because their hands are tracked monitor folk don't have tracked hands. There is actually a nice sub community there. I always get a wave or what not from other VR folk when we cross paths.
I have never seen anyone teleport. Am sure it happens but the vast majority use free run (as do I).

150 pages of the same moaning about VR. If you're gonna keep whining about it, at least bring something new to the discussion. I don't need to sift through 150 pages of the same "waaaaaa no VR no BUY" comments.

Here's another question that I hope the answer to should be obvious. I wished I'd be sure though:
Does walking on planets work on all landable planets or only on dedicated planets/locations?
One Giant Leap

See the galaxy like never before. Touch down on breathtaking planets powered by stunning new tech, soak in suns rising over unforgettable vistas, discover outposts and settlements, and explore with unrestricted freedom.

Presumably SRV-like freedom.

The only game I ever had to teleport in was The Solus Project. Only because the framerate was terrible when it was in early release.
