ANNOUNCEMENT Elite Dangerous: Odyssey Announcement

That we need a massive amount of feedback to have VR for odyssey.
My suggestion to start a change.org petition was a serious one. Publicise it around the VR gaming community and I am sure you will get signatures from those that don’t currently play ED, but support adding VR content to as many games as possible. Get 50 or 60 thousand signatures to present to ED and they may change their mind. Nothing to lose by doing it.

AFAIK there's already a petition ongoing but numbers are much lower than that of course 😅

It was good get confirmation that the current horizons planets are also getting an update along with the new planets we can land on in EDO. I can only assume all horizons players will get this so we will see something new in VR once the update drops (unless ED:H really is going to be a different game go ED;O

If you're referring to this comment; "You can visit old planets too, and we have refreshed the visuals on them.".

That doesn't say that the visuals have been updated for Horizons; just old planets have been given a makeover for Odyssey, as far as I can tell.

Or did you mean something else?

I disagree. It just means that you will be the first to walk on an undiscovered planet outside Colonia/Bubble

I fear it just means you will be the first to walk on any given atmospheric planet - because so far we weren‘t able to land on these although there seems to be little difference other than the blue sky box, a bit of particle & haze effects and more detailed... err... dust and rocks. Exciting, isn‘t it. But rest assured, Frontier will make it sound as if it was a gargantuan development effort nevertheless...

Yep, that's how I read it too. All planets will be getting whatever 'new tech' is coming with Odyssey, but if you launch the game via Horizons then it will all be the same as it is now. (I mean, they're not likely to give half of the first new paid DLC in four years away for free.)

Honestly, the lack of clarity from FD over this subject is really bad (and to me at least suggests nothing positive).

1. At launch Odyssey and all the new content coming with it, visual / graphics updates and legs will not support VR, however we are working on VR support for Odyssey and expect to have support for flying and SRV driving within timeframe (I mean it's still nearly a year away), and VR support for legs - if that is possible - by timeframe.

2. Odyssey will not be getting VR support because we do not feel that it will work for legs, so all support for VR is being removed. However, planetary / visual upgrades will be applied in Horizons which still supports VR.

3. We're really proud of our support for VR since the game launched, one of the first AAA games to fully support the VR experience. Unfortunately, we are now dropping that support.

I'm sorry to say that I think number three is the most likely - because surely if it were either of the others someone from FD would have been happy to let the community know that by now...

Whilst we don't know for sure and it could be anyone who does not move over to odyssey is SOOL I doubt it. I don't think it is good for the game OR for FDs coffers if they completely cut of all players without the dlc it would make for an emptier ED:O than FD will want.

However I can't imagine 1 set of players could have the old planetary surfaces and another the new set in the same instance... Not unless all it is is a tiny lighting improvement or something , which would.mean FD failed epically in that target render they promised to make best efforts for us in ED Beyond (which is horizons).

Optimistic hat on for a second FD will hopefully used improved surfaces as a taste for horizons players to try to encourage them to buy the DLC

I think the opposite, I think this is how it will be. That Horizons runs on the old engine and if you want the pretty new tech you need to launch Odessey. The reason is simple:

Because if it wasn't, FDEV would be on here confirming that to be case as that is the easiest and smartest thing to do to earn back some good will from VR players. The fact that they haven't means they don't have that simple straightforward route.

Because that's the way of things these days. Anything that doesn't directly affect someone or that they have no interest in - must therefore be stupid, bad and fought against regardless.

Welcome to 2020.

I hope you're not generalizing here.
I don't use VR, can't even because Xbox doesn't support it, but I think it's dumb to take VR out of an expansion for a game that initialy supports it.
They're alienating a whole group of enthousiastic players this way.
I'd be gutted too if they stopped supporting 4k on Xbox.

No, I am generalising, and there are always pleasant exceptions like yourself.

But that's what generalising is. For the most part, I stand by my original comment. I don't have a particularly high opinion of people generally - and for the most part, it's well earned.

I get you but I hope you try, just like me, not to become one of them, I must admit that I do fail miserably at that sometimes.
It's not that my life has been an always pleasant journey, mostly due to other's behaviour, but there are always exceptions.

Will definitely have to check this out now. It's been in my Steam wishlist for years now.
It is awesome. However, do some reading on where to buy depending on what hmd do you have. Oculus version is better bought on oculus, there are differences between them wrt. motion controller support (and you really want them working).

check the FAQ:

2. Which VR headsets and controllers are supported?

The Steam version of the XR VR Edition supports the HTC Vive (headset and controllers) through OpenVR.
The Oculus store version runs on Oculus Rift and supports the Oculus Touch through the Oculus API.

We are now also providing an Oculus build on Steam for customers to choose from. This build does however require the Oculus store to be running and logged in in order to correctly show the Oculus Touch Avatar (your hands!).

The Open VR version, which is the default on Steam does also run with the Oculus headset, but does not support the Oculus Touch controler.

Both versions of the game can of course also be controlled with joysticks or gamepads OR with a mixture of joystick and VR controllers. (see details about controls further down!)

If you have problems playing with the Oculus Touch controller, you may by accident be playing with the wrong version. In the Steam frontend you can right click on X Rebirth VR Edition and select "Launch X Rebirth VR Edition in Oculus VR mode"!

The game is reported to also work on many other headsets, like the Microsoft Mixed Reality Headsets (see next answer!), but without VR controller. We can not guarantee it to work on all such devices.

We do not officially support other VR headsets (e.g. OSVR) at this point, however the Steam version is using OpenVR and should be compatible with systems that support this as well. Any feedback is very welcome.

Walk around on planets, shoot other players with rifles, ya ya kool kool, can I walk around my ship? THAT'S what I want to know!
"One Giant Leap

See the galaxy like never before. Touch down on breathtaking planets powered by stunning new tech, soak in suns rising over unforgettable vistas, discover outposts and settlements, and explore with unrestricted freedom."

I find it hard to imagine that if we can explore with unrestricted freedom, the ship will be banned from this possibility.
