VR support 'not at launch' for Odyssey

There is a more sinister possibility looming in the wings...

The idea that Odyssey might not have ship interiors isn’t hugely 'sinister' I wouldn’t say.

Their old plans seemed to split 'station interiors' & 'ship interiors' into separate PDLCs. IE:

  • Walking around interiors and combative boarding of other ships
  • Combat and other interactions with other players and AIs in the internal areas of star ports

Doing either well is an absurd amount of work, so I wouldn’t have a problem if they’re taking them one step at a time. (Or if they at least got one in to a half-decent standard).

There’s only room for VR drama on my placards ;)

I've enjoyed my VR journeys since it was first enabled during pre-release, and whilst I can understand Frontier considering the complexities for supporting VR controllers and mixing that up with flatscreen players might make development difficult, I'm very disappointed it won't be in Oddysey. And considering I've reached Elite status and not interested in Fleet Carriers, I've had my fill if that is the end of VR during the next phase.

To me, Frontier have probably dropped their VR developers a long while ago as they've never put any effort into evolving VR- no VR controllers supported for example. And anyone remember the ballache getting Vive rendering to look as good as Rift, when Frontier spent a long whilst not really confirming development was actively going on (I'm going back years now)? I suspect that's because it wasn't.

What is shame is that it was Frontier who demoed ED and the wonders of VR using a Rift DK1 to me by Mr Adams Woods himself (eventually in a long queue!) at the first BAFTA games awards in 2014, when they were first showcasing docking during Alpha development. And that made me stump up the £200 to be an Alpha backer. And now, VR's been dropped from the future content, which despite me therefore being entitled to it for free, really won't matter a jot to me now.

I'd image we'll be able to continue with the Horizons build of Elite, as I'd assume Oddysey will be a seperate product in the launcher. But I won't be launching it to play on a flatscreen though, no way. I signed up for Elite in VR.

I hope Frontier have a rethink. Even if they don't, my hope is basic VR support in Oddysey, e.g. the ship works as before in VR, but any FPS stuff is done in on a virtual screen in VR projected in front of the player (VorpX / Virtual Desktop users should know what I mean!). If VR is dropped completely from Oddysey, I won't be playing. And I doubt with the length of time I've spent in ED in VR, I need to bother further. Which is a real shame, as there's no more revenue that's gonna be paid into their store for any more COVAS, or skins, or whatever other trickets they've got planned for Oddysey from me either...

TLDR: so yeah, "bye Frontier" basically, without their reconsideration!

Noted this thread is up to 72 pages now so I thought I'd toss in my 2¢ on this issue:

I don't use VR, probably never will. That said, I look at this this way: Note all the unexpected bugs that just happened when FC's suddenly came into being. Bugs. Lots of them.

The next "big thing" is going to be walking around. I'd rather they release it in a simple form and make sure they have it down correctly, THEN release an update including VR support. I doubt they'd want to alienate an entire segment of the player base by ignoring VR.

Remember: they released the original version of ED with only star port landings and we lived with it for a year. Then planetary landings came. We know they're working on atmospheres and legs. Let them learn to crawl first before we stand up and walk, then get into the whole VR thing. I know it's important to a lot of people but let's make sure they get it right first. Let's not have another FC full of bugs happen.

Ok, that's my 2¢ on the issue. Thank you.

What some of us are waiting for is a simple reply from Frontier to clear the air but apparently that's asking to much to some people.

Have they ever cleared the air on an upcoming update/expansion before? I doubt they will here, either. We've been screaming for air and legs and not a peep. Suddenly, "a hint" but with one condition: no VR support at launch. Well, if they wanted to avoid all the anger and frustration, they shouldn't have released "the hint" in the first place. I doubt we'll ever hear about what happens to VR until they're ready to beta test THAT, which will be followed by tears of joy (and salt anyway).

Yeah I suspect we can get further clarity on what’s been announced by further badgering (and maybe get them to lean towards some some stop-gap solutions), but not an 'OK VR will target X.X in Y format' announcement.

As a VR user, I am 100% okay with this. The problem however is Frontier's unwillingness to make and state that commitment and how they left the discussion. They said VR will not be supported at launch -

Well they said the same thing about PSVR over 4 years ago. PSVR STILL does not have VR support. So as a PCVR user, how am I supposed to take this as anything less than "no"? I can't and that's the unsettling part for me and VR users on this sub.

Reminder for Frontier...Reddit conducted a poll asking users if they use VR and a near 25% said yes. You really want to throw those sales away?

I think a lot depends on how they would implement it.
The main reason for 71 pages is the fact that Frontier initially said "no support for Odyssey, full stop", which means no updated planet textures as seen from space and probably no visiting atmospheric planets in VR. Most of us would have been ok with "when you walk around you'll need to remove the 3D option on graphics settings".
I suspect that Frontier didn't want to be seen as a company that 'couldn't' tecnically get it to work well, so they put their marketing hat on and decided that it was in any case a 'niche' feature.
Frontier have now said that there may be partial support, so we'll see.

FDev is a corporation now. With the big CHINEESE STAKEHOLDER. We're just an irrelevant number to them. All they do is PR speech now, the passion is long gone, the vision is gone and the OG team is also gone.
When I read your post, not sure why, but this set of lyrics popped into my head:
When I was a child
I caught a fleeting glimpse
Out of the corner of my eye
I turned to look but it was gone
I cannot put my finger on it now
The child is grown
The dream is gone

I guess the game is dead. How about we wait until it's actually released and let them mention if VR support is coming up or never coming?
