Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

No Man's Sky is very much worth playing, however other players names and the names of their bases and ships are just as stupid there as anywhere else :) You can pretty much avoid seeing them, though.

I'm not super-upset with seeing them in Elite, because I was expecting it. This game is starting to push the multi-player aspects more, and I think Odyssey will continue that trend.

I'm used to seeing dumb names (and behavior) in other games.

I can mostly overlook it. It's either that, or lose the fun the game does have, and that's a lot. I ain't gonna let them ruin my game!

If FDEV could just clean up the system map, and give me filters that turn carrier display on or off, I'd be quite happy.

Thank you for that, and sorry for the slow response. I'm afraid that the Carrier update has had me park Elite for a little while and switch my loyalty back to RDR2 online, which I'm currently finding more immersive as a lockdown antidote. I am planning to come back, just got fed up seeing Carriers everywhere. Your closing sentence I'm in complete agreement with - that would fix my hesitations at a stroke. I have no issue with Carriers existing, or their owners liking them (frankly, with how the economy has gone, anyone can have one who wants one - the old grind for Elite in any of the three disciplines was much harder than raising 5bn cr), I'd just rather they were easier for teh rest of us to tune out. THanks for the response, and for the NMS feedback.

I thought I’d see if the dust had settled, so I “upgraded”, and logged in. Turns out all the local factions have gone a bit nuts, with many a system flipping to another power or gone independent, which I know is another bug that was reported. Wonderful.

Also, none of the stations are greeting me, as all the STC chatter has disappeared as well. Which is also a known issue. It sounds rather flat without them, and I miss the elegant tones of the Imperial traffic controllers!

So after some consideration, I left for Shin. Dez to outfit my Clipper. After a modicum of tweaking and outfitting, I left on a course for NGC7822 to get out of the way for a bit whilst things settle down.

The clipper is very enjoyable to fly, and has a great cockpit view, but it’s terrible for fuel! I’d not want to be taking it on a sparse area expedition, or out to the edges. All the sounds seem a “bit off” too. And there are disconcerting “workshop” sounds just continuously occurring, which is irritating. There is a twanging piece of wire in the mix too, which is really jarring.

I added some fuel tanks to mine!!

I parked just above the rings of this planet. It made for a pretty cool view!

I'm a little miffed that I flew all the way to Colonia in a 35ly jumping Python (fully equipped as I didn't want to pay transport costs when I arrived and I wanted to be able to cozy up to a faction straightaway) and now people are just hopping over there on these FC buses. I came out here because it was desolate, now the place is like a bus garage for day tourists.

To be fair, most of those in Colonia just bought them out there.

But regardless, I do agree with you that Fleet Carriers have changed the game in some permanent ways, and made the galaxy a bit more accessible (or more crowded, depending on your view :) ).

I was thinking, say some while ago, you flew out in your 50ly jumping ship, right out to the edge. You collected a lot of scans, a lot of data. Maybe found a system with 2 ELw's and a WW. You have all that stored, then BOOM, from nowhere, someone just jumps into that system, scans it, banks it on their own carrier. You get home and find you were scooped. It's a bit much.

There was a carrier parked off Beagle Point within 2.5 days of their launch.

I think something inside me died a little when I saw how small the galaxy had become at that point.

It’s still large enough if you are out there on your own with a ship, of course, but still.

Exactly this. When people became obsessed with building 75ly+ jumping ships, the Neutron Highway, give us intersystem jumps, I kept saying, ED has the largest map in any game available and all people want to do is make that smaller and smaller. It is gutting really.

Once you 've gone more than 3000 ly from the bubble new system discoveries start creeping in. I think FC explorers will discover fewer planets and systems in the end since they are going to have to spend a certain amount of their time mining. Ultimately everyone has to jump and honk, a FC gives advantages certainly but it won't make a big impact on discoveries.

Are we saying that I should have visited Colonia while only the Elite did so? Now I'll just be fighting it out for space on the sun lounger...<Insert your own national stereotypes here. Edit. >

I hear the Formadine rift is nice at this time of year.

Absolutely this - have to be frank, having given it some time, fleet carriers have ruined the game for me. My family knew about my expedition out to Colonia, now it appears that the whole thing was a waste of time. There was a guy on FB this morning, half way back from Colonia, didn't fancy the 300 jumps he had left, so was asking someone to come pick him up in a fleet carrier. He's logging back in when they let him know that they're there. Sorry to say it, but as it sits and for my style of gameplay, the 'must have everything now' tranche of society have ruined my favourite ever game and I am incredibly sad about it. Playing more RDR than Elite, suddenly, and might be done entirely. Am actually in mourning.
