Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

If there was no exploration, how could there be a video like this? (from 2017)
I'd also mention the famous cloud tech, that would allow flying into gas giants such as Crusader, and maybe scoop fuel (*) which we should have by 2015 2016 2017 2018 2019 2020 the next 2 years, it's just around the corner !

(*) by the way where are fuel scoops ? how are big "exploration" ships supposed to refuel in deep space ? oh and where is deep space ? Is that the same thing as a "release" ?

Aahhh - but have you looked behind every Big Benny's machine? Have you checked under every turtle? Have you checked the labels on every plushie? Have you looked at thin-film interference on bag helmets? Have you mopped every Idris? Have you sniffed every Ranta dung?

That is where the true exploration lies, in the wonderfully rich and deep lore of comparing serial numbers of procedurally-generated plushies - IF such a thing were to exist, but it might be on a roadmap somewhere and once they have developed the tools to build the pipeline for it, CI-G will be able to generate serial numbers for plushies in-game in just a few years, so it basically exists right now!

Buy an Idris!

I have SC (and a few ships in there). There is no exploration. Currently there is only one star system, where everyone spawns in, with no unknown locations, no external portal to another system.

How dare you say there is no exploration. SC has CAVES. Are you not a spelunker? 😀

Also there is no associated gameplay, in any way, like getting money for discoveries, checking new locations, discovering new species (and getting money for that for example), etc. Since everything is hand made, and not proc gen (dont get me started on that !) it's unlikely there will be anything like that ever.
Ships have absolutely zero system associated with exploration (like planetary or biological scanners, mapping tools, etc.) and even if you want to play pretend, there is currently a hard limit on how long you can stay away from a refuel station due to no in-space or on-surface refuelling. No hand tools (like a star trek tricorder) either.
The only thing people do at the moment is take screenshots and play pretend, while showing a scenery that tens of thousands other people have already seen, and multiple times even due to that subreddit that is basically a screenshot repository.
Also given how long it takes for CiG to craft a complete system (about 3 years i would say) by 2023 we might have a 2nd system complete. Everything in there will be "discovered" in a matter of days.
By the hypothesis you reach immortality and live long enough to see 100 systems delivered, well first chances are actual interplanetary space flight will be common by then, but yet again that's quite not enough to warrant any kind of "exploration".

I thought it was quite obvious that he meant "going out on foot/with ship and check out places" by exploration. Just an example how the opposing factions in the Star Citizen spectacle often speak right past each other because of the different understanding. If you play SC or are familiar with the topic you ll get that people simply zip around to enjoy the vista cuz face it....there hardly is anything else to do and they call it "exploration". When somebody outside the project hears the statement "exploration is already in" they will have of course rather different expectations and thoughts based on what real games provide who offer and support exploration. So Surefoots description is quite correct but because of its nature I m pretty sure he would ve been burnt at the stake in other places and called "hater" simply for stating the facts. I m sure he could ve done it more respectful or humble tho :D

As far as the absence of the main protagonists go I see several possible explanations but none of em are good. There are good ones....the thing is just that those are highly improbable and becoming more and more impropable the more time passes without them appearing or making a statement. I ll be waiting on the sidelines awaiting any sightings of these rare but fantastic creatures which might provide some real insight of the reasons. Until then I do have my own thoughts and opinions same as the people inside the project and just as valid.

Holy Christ, there’s always more...

Indeed. From a detached and distanced point of view the amount of material is staggering and impressive. There simply is so much material to go through that the fact alone will deter people from doing it. Same as looking for something to snack in the wallmart isle and getting overloaded with sensorium impressions ranging from colors to variety to product placement. But if you DO make the effort and consider release times for the videos in correlation with funding spikes you will notice a few things. Mainly how the theoretical and marketing work done in regards to Star Citizen justifies a lot of people working mainly on fluff (videos and polishing) aimed at consumers to keep paying or to pay more. Its true that some marketing stunts reek of amateurism and noobish mistakes putting CIG to shame but I ll generously write that off to the companies established incompetence :D Such material simply has no place in the project this early in development but again....priorities I guess.

It should be most people on project development. Building and integrating the assets, creating and refining the features and mechanics etc...you know....developing the game

I just dont see that happening here and the nice graphics dont distract me from the elephant in the room. And as I further refuse to accept all the mind gymnastics coming with (often) ridiculous justifications this is a chasm that has become insurmountable to people not indoctrinated. So the correct and expected inquiery usually is "where is the game?" which is today met with defensive statements, justifications and ridicule because there simply is not good answer anymore. And the people "doubling down" and convincingly proclaim that "Star Citizen already has more to offer then any other game" only out themselves in this spiel.

Yeah that's what i called "play pretend", one can also make noises with their mouth to simulate the activation of scanners and whatnot..
But even considering that sightseeing and taking screen shots might be "exploration" gameplay (to each his own i guess).. the amount of material that is offered is so small, it's just one star system with a handful of planets and their respective moons. You can see everything in a matter of a few hours (counting quantum travel times, train commutes, refuelling, various crashes in between..). And you can definitely do it in the Aurora starter ship, the external camera is the same, and it's smaller, consumes less fuel (*), and is easier to land just anywhere. The hand crafted maps in cities and stations are small early 2000's era FPS maps, you get around them in a matter of minutes.
Comparing with finished games that actually include exploration (like NMS, or Elite Dangerous) there's clearly a whole missing segment of the game here, from ship systems to gameplay elements. And nothing on the foreseeable roadmap future.

(*) Did i mention that refuelling is a major PITA, with various bugs, unresponsive UI, silly workarounds that might or might not actually work...

I m sure he could ve done it more respectful or humble tho :D
Sometimes a bit of a face slap is needed for people to return to reality... I'm all for brutalizing the cultists just a bit, just to jiggle the neurons around, maybe something would connect in there.

My my... Everything in this video, from the speech, the staging (so genuine it's perceived as ripped off Prometheus' Weyland's TED speech teaser short), crowd reaction... to the very thing it tries to sell given state of the game and how 'we desperatly need money so much we're ready to sell anything' it sounds, was already cringey as hell back then, but is more and more as years fly.

In addition to "opposing factions" there are new people in the thread who don't have context. My clarifications are primarily for newbies.
Sorry to be a n00b, but I have to ask - what is going on with that presentation?
Chris Roberts wants to be a movie director / producer in Hollywood. I assume he spends a lot of time directing presentations like this.

Hey, i wouldn't call what Number 2 is doing shilling. I think that is undeserved.

Even CR refunded, when he sold SC IP to CIG for what was it, $3mil?.

I didn't know he actually "sold" the IP to CIG. That's cheeky.

More relevant, when he put up the SQ42 IP as collatoral for the Coutts loan. There seems to be some debate as to whether CIG ever paid that off. It would be strange if they hadn't, since it was meant to be just a payday loan until the tax credits came in, but some people have said that they still see it as being outstanding.

If you want to give it a go you can have many hours of fun, no need to spend anymore than $45 on an Aurora... I still play at least once a month so it must have something.... Also the starter ships both have very good cockpit views if you just want to fly around and explore... I just had a look at their terms and conditions for refunds. They seem more generous than steam purchases...
He also referred to years of delay as the "politics around the development time" 🤣
