ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

For me, I got the shipped email on Thursday, a UPS email on Friday, and then it arrived on the Monday. Yours might be different.

I know some people got theirs before the UPS email arrived though.

So I got my DK2 today, fired it up with ED but I'm getting a metric ton of flickering.

It seems mostly shadows, and even planet surfaces. I'm sure I've done something wrong, has any else had this issue?

Good to see all you guys going yellow!
You're in for a hell of a ride.
I'm sure many of you have ordered the DK2 because of this wonderfyl game (Elite). But there is lots of other fun to had too...

Sorry for going off topic but... I'll also throw in a recommendation for Alien: Isolation in the DK2. Its a bit of a technical marvel imo. The graphics are pretty impressive and yet it runs seamlessly super-sampled in DK2, no hitches no judder. If/when FD get their engine/rift integration refined to this level I'm going to be a very happy chappy!

So far my top 5 rift experiences are:

1 - Elite: Dangerous - The game is basically VR dream come true, and it is integrated so well. (though I would rank it much lower in terms of optimization, the awesomeness of the game itself and the smart integration means it has to be #1)

2 - Live for speed (demo) Cars work like cockpits and older graphics mean it runs silky smooth. Amazing integration for a small indie team and the greatest feeling of the so called 'presence' that I have experienced to date.

3 - Alien Isolation. Silky smooth with graphics that good. I don't know how they did it. This would be #1 on my list but I don't think first person games are ideal on the rift and it makes me a wee bit queasy after an hour or so.

4 - Titans of Space. A really nicely presented 'educational' guide around the solar system. Even at 1 millionth scale it is still incredibly daunting! This is the first experience I put new users through, it's blown more than a few people away!

5 - Vanguard V. A fun demo of an arcade shooter (starfox meets panzer dragoon) that works only with head tracking. Plays really well and has a pretty awesome soundtrack! Hope it gets made into a full game...

Funny that 4 of those are space games. Honorable mentions?

Blockout_Rift - surprisingly great 3d tetris style game.

Euro Truck Sim 2 - very relaxing.

Cineveo - a very nifty little cinema/movie player app that lets you watch in movies in interesting locations. 3D movies look really cool, way better than with glasses! (costs money)

Senza Peso - Another very polished short but sweet experience that I often put first timers through. Opera.

Radial G - The game itself isn't all that great but if by some miracle Wipeout HD got released on PC with Rift support then I would never take the damn thing off... Until then I guess there is this.

Sublevel Zero - Cool but incredibly hard Descent clone.

There are other interesting demos but these are the ones I would recommend that you all try! I think I've played almost everything that's out there but would love to hear if there's anything essential that I've missed! Anyone tried Grid Autosport's newly integrated support. I don't have it but will buy it if the rift works well!

Sorry if this whole post is considered totally off topic! Enjoy your new toys guys!

well. sad to say, but I tried all advice ..and still the same blurry-ness....

no stutter , all smooth but very blurry.
I tried update firm ware

http://www.roadtovr.com/how-to-update-oculus-rift-dk2-firmware/

the nividea setting
and in rift settings.. still the same..
I tried landing . but was so blurry I couldn't judge my height ?

any advice on a direction to try .. most welcome.

if you see a sidewinder hanging around out side a station.. that will be me fiddling with settings.. come over and hoover in front . so I can use you as a
guide for close up visuals...... :)

I got a mic too so have a chat.........

Hello!
Whats your IPD?
Because right now DK2 have a lens separation of 63.5mm (center to center) and due to the spherical nature of the lens if your IPD is too high or too low your eyes are not in the sweet spot for a good and clear image.
Mine is 67mm and i must say that my sweet spot is very tiny and i need some time to adjust the DK2 perfectly to have a clear image.

There is some modding to change the lens separation

Have you got SLI enabled? tell us more.

Sorry mate I should of gone into any kind of depth there.

My card is the 295x2, so the amd crossfire is turned on for it for profiles without a profile etc.

Each time I try and turn it off and run ED, I get a bluescreen error that points to a rift file so for now I'm leaving well alone.

Me too, but a few weeks ago I saw people saying it turned up before the UPS site registered it. UPS are pants compared to DPD. With DPD you get texts saying "your parcel will be delivered by ALAN between 12:00 and 13:00 today". Its like science fiction!

I'm determinedly NOT getting my hopes up.

I might just go past our reception area though......just to check things out....

UPS left my Rift down the side of my garage
Thankfully it's been rescued by the wife, now I just need to finish work and get home round half the m25

AMD R9 295x2

There's a bug at present with the sli/crossfire implementation, planetary textures come out as bands and shadow issues etc . as the 295x2 is a dual GPU card it runs in crossfire as standard. One work around is to put environmental detail down to low, or you can disable crossfire in the amd overdrive menu

the blue screen you got is with the riftenabler.sys?
if that's the case, you need to downgrade your driver to 14.4 instead of 14.9
There is a way to use 14.9 but you need to clean your reg files and it's

Ahhh well then, thanks for that info.

And thanks everyone for the help too, i'll give it another go later on.

Yes.

If you're using SLI/Crossfire - turn it OFF.

Turn Shadows down to Medium. Everything else either off, or as low as possible. Up them later if you feel your rig can handle it... for now, just get rid of the artifacts.

Make sure your Rift is set into Extended mode through the config util.

Make sure you are running at 1080p in 75Hz in Elite (graphics options).

Even in driver 14.4 I get the BSOD on RiftEnabler.sys.

The trick is to put the Rift into Direct Mode, then turn it OFF. Then change your Crossfire settings. You do sometimes get the BSOD again, but providing when you reboot your Rift is still off, you can then change the setting.

After that, set everything back to how it needs to be for Elite (Extended mode).

Bit of a faff, but it works.
