Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Finally, putting a non-SC into the picture you essentially move SC outside of space sim scope by defining a scope of its own.

Keep cool, I was just responding to ECity demanding what I think if the SC development stop at 3.10.
If so, for me, there will be no SC but another game.
SC to be called SC need to be a MMO with big multicrew ships.
But CIG will not stop at 3.10, no need to worry about it.

Enceladus is mostly covered by fresh, clean ice, making it one of the most reflective bodies of the Solar System. Consequently, its surface temperature at noon only reaches −198 °C (−324 °F), far colder than a light-absorbing body would be.”

And what if I actually am a seasoned software engineer, with practical experience in gamedev? :D
Yeah, it gave me a laugh as well and I have 10 years in Software R&D :). Also tempted me to put in a reply in spectrum but I would just get moderated.

PS. You really do get to work on stuff that is 5 years out from what is currently available in R&D, however it is alternatively called Risk and Danger for good reason. Database Administration is a much more stable career :)

I was thinking about how this happened and I realised they are probably using a webservice/microservice/message-queue system for this super new AI. Sure enough, the bartender stuff started appearing on the roadmap in 2017, about the same time they started refactoring for use of diffusion a sort of service-bus/messaging type framework available on AWS.

That isn't suprising and not cutting edge as almost every online game, mobile game and high transaction business application have moved over to decoupled micro-services. What is suprising is that it's taken them three years and work began five years into the project which is unheard of.

It also explains the pauses while the NPC waits for the response, as we can probably guess "iteration one" is going to require a whole lot of scalling and tuning before those messages start to respond quickly. Every drink you order from the bartender is probably creating a message that gets sent to the microservice for queing (generally over HTTP), processing, sends back a response etc. The hillarious bug above must have been a response being recieved that somehow caused the NPC to spawn in the middle of the scene to start acting on it.

For a crowdfunded game that's supposed to be open development this stuff is really hard to track down and figure out, they say next to nothing about what they do other than that they are building feature X, and using technology Y. Compare this to Frontier's "we're making a space game that will use P2P networking" three years later, here's a complete run down of what we did including every major issue we resolved and virtually enough information (from availability zones, tagging, relational and nosql examples) you can take away and do it yourself, that we're told is comparitively closed.

Five years in before they figured out how they were going to even attempt it, then a further three years to deliver the first "iteration" of, what to me looks like a fairly standard NPC microservice architecture is short changing backers IMHO
I read the diffusion doco and found it interesting that it adds to your AWS charge. Latest version is no longer available from the AWS market place and you have to deal direct with the company now it seems. I once tried to guess what ED/Frontier were having to pay for the services they use in AWS but gave up. Those in the commercial/government space tell me it is not cheap.

Yes it's cool discussing. But I wanted to respond to someone that quoted me and this post is 50 posts far away now. Everyone had switched to another topic. I don't really like when someone get back an old post, so I will not do it myself.
I'm afraid this forum is too active and fast for me.

Seriously, I was meaning to reply to this and agree, in a completely awestruck way, what, 2 weeks ago? thats ~60 sheets ago btw. :)

I think I've spent half as much time reading these posts over the years, as have played ED (which is nearly 4000 hours) which is far more than I've played SC ( actually anything else), obviously. I've tried to play SC maybe 500 hours, but probably have a total of 4 hours in there. I'd like to spend more, but every time I feel comfortable, and get this slightly elated feeling of "hey, this isn't so bad" the game crashes.

But that was the second post I was meaning to reply to....here goes the first, from a few days before that...

Meanwhile, exactly no one who has followed these threads for any length of time will have been surprised by the arc of your posts. Starting with trying to teach us about the state of SC and citizen-splaining how we don't understand the game and game development (never mind whether we're OG 2012 Kickstarter backers), various examples of confusing dreams and aspirations with reality when it comes to what SC offers right now, deflecting criticism by taking irrelevant jabs at ED for its own flaws, not being able to tell the difference between people attempting to set the record straight and "ridiculing" you, and then spontaneously combusting in self-righteousness and complaining we all "hate" SC. You've pretty much ticked all the boxes.

I think a number of folks who have been around a while, started out in a similar way, and it's almost like clockwork now, seeing the trend and over and over...and over the years, you start to wonder if it's ever going to change. i.e. will SC be stable for more than 10 minutes, or get a bit stable, then keep improving? I still try to log in once a week or so, but the result is mostly the same. I do have an old computer though, which is shy 2 cores the requirement, but has upgrading a PC effected anyones game crashes?

Wow. Is this really true? According to CTT @1:08, the whales are the ones who're now saying

"regular players shouldn't have access in game to ships they paid over $500 for. That regular players should have their accounts wiped every 3 months. To allow the whales to retain their advantage and exclusivity they paid for as large financial backers"

If the whales can be thinking like that, then what's in store for the franchise if the megalodoon $46M+ backer whale Calder brothers decide to go down the elitist AAA publisher route? Given the fact they're the single biggest investors who own 10% of the company, and the only whales to date who have a seat on Board of Directors? What's to stop them from demanding Chris transform SC into the practical, industry standard cash grab machine? Something that would earn investors genuine billions in profit i.e. releasing a macro transaction ridden, poorly optimized MVP the likes of an ultra high fidelity graphics GTAO or Candy Crush?

Basically, what the hell is driving this sort of narcissistic and elitist mindset all of a sudden? If CR decides to listen and make this the new gospel in the next patch update? Because decisive talk like this will likely turn the SC fan base inside out and tearing itself apart.

CR has already shown prejudicial treatment of whales over the poorer $50 - $500 peasant backers. So if CR makes the mistake of taking his whales seriously on this latest bit of elitist bum nuggetry, then cyber crap is going to hit the fan. For that would be the absolute definition of insanity^2 o_O

CTT is a few sandwiches short of a picnic but his videos are somewhat entertaining

I've done tons of trading/mining grinding money for parts etc.

I've never been killed by a player in game trading/mining*.

The amount I've lost to 30k's is off the charts.

*except a couple times at jumptown doing solo runs, but that was part of the fun
Since the heady days of 3.7...before 'persistence'... where I regularly gave millions away to newbies about a week before a wipe, I've haven't been able to acrue any significant amount of aUEC since 3.8...where constant 30k's turned me into a virtual pauper in 2 days. I'm sitting at about 500k or so in the live build although saying that, I've spent a couple of millions on ship upgrades and ship purchases... which would all be for naught if I had to do a character reset of course. I haven't played much at all due to the sheer number of 30k's, constant threat of having to do a reset to recover from bugs, mining not working or just plain distraction from other games in my library that actually work. I don't recall ever rage quitting a game due to sheer frustration with persistent crashes and bugs...like ever. Seems SC has produced another first.

Unless they fix the current bugbear for me in 3.10, namely the FPS crashing to a slideshow when I'm mining needing a rage quit to sort out...I won't be putting much time into it either. The current fascination with combat oriented pursuits to the detriment of everything else from Ci¬G aren't for me either...unlike you and many others, it's just not my thing, never will be.

I think "according to CTT" is the key phrase here. He gives no source, and one of the YT comments seems appropriate:

@Citizen Tech Talk The whale came to you telling you that he wants to have his ships persisted across patches only for whales? And to nobody else? Does it never occur to you, that maybe you are the only one who would take such a bait because its just too silly to take seriously to begin with? Most people dismiss such info because its silly. Why ballon such dumb statements to this level of drama (aka do we not have more important things going on)? And if that guy was merely a troll trolling you, he would be laughing his ass off behind you back right now... but I guess I cant judge that, because I dont know your source nor if that source is trustworthy. I guess you deem him trustworthy otherwise you wouldnt have made the video about it.

What heresy is this? SC was promised to be BDSSE, not MMO.
It looks like it failed to be the former, but it just physically can't be the latter, as the engine simply doesn't support that. 16 players per instance was great in 2008, okay in 2012, but now we have Battlefield and various Battle Royales that had dwarfed that number into Not So Massively. And when multiplayer interaction essentially ends at 8-player ship vs another 8-player ship, it's not MMO by mechanics, it's MOBA.

Fun fact: you are currently enjoying non-SC game, because current state of this software is not a MMO. More spicy is that you are content with that, as the only thing you want is a more stable server :)

Your fun fact is just evident fact. Yes, what I enjoy now is not SC yet, it's an alpha in development. SC will be the real SC only when in beta.
'the only thing you want' : absolutely false, try not to speak for me. I want a lot more (mmo, components, salvage...). But I'm a grown man and I can enjoy what I have now, even in it's unfinished state.
