Boomer in and of itself is not a derogatory term, as I'm sure you know, it's a term to describe a generation and the era they were born in. I myself would be categorised as 'Generation X'.
But "slave" is also not a derogatory term. As far as I'm aware, "Ok boomer" is a phrase that can be offensive to some people; one might even argue that it's ageist, remember you said "the fact that you don't find something offensive doesn't mean others don't" earlier in the thread?

Now now dude, that's not really politically correct, is it? :)

I never said it was.

It clearly can because a forum member has already said they found it personally offensive yet you continue to use it, I have not.

one might even argue that it's ageist

The meme that was that phrase was not aimed at any age, teens were saying it to teens, that was really the funny part of it,

Now now dude, that's not really politically correct, is it?

I said it, someone said they found it offensive, I stopped saying it. I'd say that was fairly politically correct.

There seems to be a determination in this thread that I am the one saying I'm offended by stuff, I have said no such thing, rather, I have categorically stated that I do not find anything thrown at me, personally, offensive. I allow others to be offended if they wish, I do not get offended by it.

Not only is there a determination to find me 'wanting to be offended', there also seems to be a determination to be offended by things I have not said or behaviours I have stated I do not exhibit. Pretty funny because isn't that the accusation of people opposed to political correctness, that people go out of their way, are determined to be offended? Yet I'm seeing that here. People making to stuff I've said, to be offended by it.

These changes are really not a big deal, it's not like we've been to any of them and now have to rewrite our address books or explain it to a confused postman.

Times change and the names on the maps have always changed with them.

But you seem to defend the use of that offensive term, even in your last post.

But how can you joke around using terms that some might find offensive? That is hardly politically correct and just contradicts everything you said before.
I said it, someone said they found it offensive, I stopped saying it. I'd say that was fairly politically correct.
Again you appear to defend yourself for using that term instead of apologising to anyone that could've got insulted after reading your post. That is also not politically correct. If you were a celebrity you would've been cancelled by now.

Obviously I'm not serious above, I'm simply demonstrating how any term or phrase can be labelled "offensive" by any person. Anything that you say can be misinterpreted. If we were to stop using words or phrases that someone may find offensive, we would stop talking altogether.

The examples given are not a big deal but the reason behind the changes we can see where this might head into.
Someone mention dwarf stars and different colors black white brown red what if people get offended by the word dwarf or a color and how much of space will have to end up changing.

We used to write "HERE BE DRAGONS" on maps and draw unlikely sea beasties. As our knowledge grows the names become more suitable, take the Siamese twin galaxies they were discovered in the 1700's when Siamese twins were bought and sold and paraded around to earn their owners money. We've moved on from that thankfully as a society to a great extent, so lets ditch the name to the history books and good riddance.

The reason behind the video is just faux outrage by a guy claiming to be angry about faux outrage, he's just as much a snowflake as the enemy he perceives to be attacking the unlikely thing he's confusing with his way of life. Also Captain Marvel and girls being in Star Trek seem to annoy him based on a quick look at his channel.

Marathon is not Snickers though AND IT SHALL NEVER BE SO .

Boomer in and of itself is not a derogatory term,
Are you sure about that? Wikipedia disagrees with you...

"OK boomer" is a catchphrase and meme used by teenagers and young adults to dismiss or mock outdated attitudes typically associated with people born in the two decades following World War II, known as baby boomers.

But "slave" is also not a derogatory term. As far as I'm aware, "Ok boomer" is a phrase that can be offensive to some people; one might even argue that it's ageist, remember you said "the fact that you don't find something offensive doesn't mean others don't" earlier in the thread?

Yes, given it is clearly targeting people of the baby boom in the two decades after ww2, that means its targeting 55-75 year olds and is thus inherently ageist.

The meme that was that phrase was not aimed at any age, teens were saying it to teens, that was really the funny part of it,
Perhaps you ought to look up the urban dictionary definition(s) to see how it is interpreted and used by others: " Ok boomer is a simple way to tell old people to f*#k off."
(The F word was censored by me as this isn't worth picking up infractions for)

And while we are down this snowflake rabbit hole - did y'all know martial arts are inherently racist? They cannot really think it is acceptable to call them black belts these days do they?

Are you sure about that? Wikipedia disagrees with you...

Yeah that is about the phrase. I was talking about the word.

So I repeat, the term 'Boomer' in and of itself, is not objectively offensive.

Perhaps you ought to look up the urban dictionary definition(s) to see how it is interpreted and used by others

Or I could have already gone down a rabbit hole on this when my kids started using it on me and found out in what context they were using, where they got it from, which is what I did.

I've no doubt some use it in the context given in the link you provided but others don't. When I see teens saying the phrase to each other, there are no old people involved. That is the context I find funny.

You're not using the word boomer, you repeatedly said OK Boomer, so you were using the whole meme, and thus slinging its insulting connotations at the person you were addressing with it.

Correct, then someone said they found the phrase offensive, then after that I used the word 'boomer' in further discussion.

I have not said that the phrase is not offensive.

The bit you quoted, "Boomer in and of itself is not a derogatory term", came later in the conversation.

Keep up.

Probably a good idea to rename the Eskimo Nebula. It's not a matter of whether one group of people is or isn't offended; or whether the word Eskimo is inherently objectively wrong, but whether it's really defensible to refer to an astronomical entity as an ethnic caricature in the first place. Like if we had a Chinaman Nebula which looked like a sphere with a wide-based triangle above it, we could argue all day about exactly how right or wrong the word is all by itself, but this would be a distraction from the fact that what's really at issue is the use of a cartoonified stereotype of an ethnicity.

So, even though they informed you that phraseology was offensive, you continued to use the significant part of the language underpinning the offensive meme?

I like the names Eskimo Nebula, Sombrero Nebula and Witch Head Nebula these are stereotypical thus easily recognizable names that children and anyone looking at space can understand not just space nerds saying hey thats NGC 2392 or look at those NGC 4567 and NGC 4568.

Am I going to have to post pictures of the thread for you or are you going to read it?

I said the phrase, twice, to a forum user.

A completely different forum user then said they found the phrase offensive.

I have not used the phrase on here since.

I have used the word 'Boomer' since because in and of itself, it is not an objectively offensive word.
