Question for Open players who don't like PVP/ganking... help me understand

Dystopian future? Nothing of the sort...

On January 25, 3305, Imperator Kaeso Mordanticus was brought before the Imperial Senate and Emperor Arissa Lavigny-Duval. In a surprise to observers such as Cassia Carvalho, Senator Denton Patreus immediately executed Mordanticus with his personal sidearm. The Imperial Guard then began gunning down any senators who had previously expressed support for Nova Imperium, including Pal Vespasian and Eloise Winterstone. Following these events, the Emperor proclaimed, "There is no Nova Imperium. There is only the Empire."

A perfect example of civility in government reshuffles.

Anarchy is a paradox.

No, it isn't.

Imperial manners at their finest, CMDR.

Yep.

The point is, you cannot use "but muh mad maxx/blade runner/purge" as an excuse.

Humanity is still far too civilized in the majority of its inhabited space for this to be "the norm"

By extension, using this excuse as way to justify certain gameplay is stupid as well. It's fine if you wanna RP as some legit lunatic who's schitzo and stuff.

But you cannot, and will not, ever make me think that the entire society of humanity is just like DayZ 24/7 with every single human all the time. Nope, try again.

I'm not gonna say you're wrong in the way you play.

But

I will say this: Elite Dangerous takes place in a time that is over 1,000 years into the future. With said future, we as a species, have achieved FTL travel and are very well capable in interstellar travel. We can even hold our own and even defeat an alien race so advanced and alien, that they can be mistaken as gods.

You cannot, even for a second, make me ever believe that human race devolved into pure anarchy everywhere 24/7, as if it's like that movie Purge. We would have never, ever, and I mean e. v. e. r., have even achieved the attempted terraforming of mars, let alone interplanetary travel due to the fact that we are too busy KoSing each other because "haha gun goes brrrrrrrr"

It's stupid and you know it's stupid. A lot of players RP their gameplay, many of those are OG Elite vets. This is how the game is played by many. But when you get some certain individuals come in and try to treat this game and the players as if they're less than canon fodder in whatever CoD game is out these days, is when you have problems.

Play your way and all that, I know.

But

You cannot expect to treat this game like it's a 5-minute timewaster like candy crush.

It's not a "video game"

It's an experience. It must be treated as such, otherwise you get stupid threads like this one or anything "open only"

Do you work in marketing by any chance? Because that's how marketing likes to talk about things. For this consumer -it's a video game. One with which I have about an equal number of hours with compared to Overwatch and TF2. I am not an OG vet and couldn't care less. Ships go boom, stars are pretty, CMDRs fly in hilarious paper ships. This is what is best in life for me. And I've been provided a mode to play as I see fit.

tbh I do not care what any of you say, I am just going to play the game the way I want. If you do not like it then tough. I bought a game that actively sold itself as it never said anything about how well practiced or equipped those cmdrs had to be. If the game allows me to do it without breaking any ToS then that's fine by me.

Notice how I used the word "I" a lot there? that's because I bought the game and spent my money on it. I never bought the game to have to do mental gymnastics explaining to people why and what I do. I bought it so I could blow people up if I so cared. The fact i spent several years Exploring, running factions, and many other "fun" activities are nothing more than a part of my journey in Elite Dangerous.

You go get em Jesus!

See, this guy sold a lot of carpentry products to buy the game. I doubt he would have had much time for someone asking him to remove a leg from his four-legged table, because it made it easier for them to do the magic tablecloth trick. The man has principles damn you!

I have zero idea what the point of this post is, let alone what the content is about either. I just find it amusing that Jesus is a PvP player, and good luck to him!

(No offence meant Mr Jesus, you're a lovely chap, and have a fabulous beard too)

Using the game's setting as an "excuse" to engage in emergent PVP would require all players be equally aware of, and invested in, the game's setting and backstory. If there's anything I've learned from this thread, it's that those kinds of assumptions are fatally flawed from the get-go. Many players simply launch the game and play, and whatever lore/setting/whatever they're aware of comes in bits and pieces, if at all.

Even if, hypothetically, a mandatory tutorial was created, a sort of primer of "what to expect in Open", and all new CMDRs were required to watch / interact with it prior to their first journey in Open, would that really change anything? Players are still going to come from their many and varied backgrounds, with their many and varied expectations and goals for the game.

It's meant to be big and broad enough to accommodate all, and there are additional features - game modes, social tools - to tailor the experience even further.

I suspect FDev feel they've done enough in this regard, and leave it to the players to sort it out as they learn the game and use the tools available to curate the experience to match their expectations.

TF2 tries to be video gamey.

Elite does not. video gameyness is not the primary feel for this kind of game.

That's the point.

Can you define video gamey here? Cuz last I checked that is categorically what it is. A video game. You might take this all very seriously, but I don't treat it like a religious experience. Well, except when I'm following our savior Colonia Jesus around delivering the holy frag gospel.

Yep.

Executions sanctioned without trial on the floor of a superpower's senate. If that's not the sign that enough power justifies whatever action you take, I don't what is. Anyway, I'm merely highlighting that this is not a galaxy full of sunshine and roses.

It's also demonstrably not every human everywhere as evidenced by my contact list being full of players who haven't attacked me and I haven't attacked. It's a rare event that carries a small risk when you drop into a system. So no, open as it is isn't DayZ so this would be an incorrect comparison to start with.

As with every sci-fi however, a few monsters exist.

This may shock you but there are lot of people out there that won't kill you simply for what you say.

I don't need the state to treat my neighbors well any more than I need God to be a good person.
