VR support 'not at launch' for Odyssey

Pants I missed it, I thought it was at 18:00
Is there a link please
here it is:

Thanks so I have seen it.
It looks ok tho ice planets are a far cry from the beyond.artistic target. Also sounds like those upgrades are for odyssey not horizons so they are perhaps double dipping on that.
I dunno. I would be interested enough if it was in VR but I have already kind of experienced the moments they were waxing lyrical about (the moment when you see the size of your ship and the Niel Armstrong moment ) by playing in VR.

Also this thing people like stigbob have said that how a NMS style [VR] implementation would simply not be good enough for ED.... I would say a NMS implementation is exactly what is required because that is.the kind of gameplay they just showed.... Using a scanner to take plant sample to get credits for? Sounds familiar to me.

Look it's fine, I would play and enjoy that but nothing shown so far warrants throwing vr under the bus imo or warrants the logic that it HAS to be a cutting edge all bells and whistles vr implementation.

I am also worried about the idea that they have finally realised the promises they made right at the start. I am probably being overly cynical but that sound like laying the groundworks for this being the final expansion to me. Yes call me out on that if you like just like People did when I said DBs comments on VR all those years ago was a really bad sign for VR support in the next DLC.

Seems I was not spouting FUD back then after all :(

NMS style? Yes. NMS quality? Hopefully not. It can be done better.

Note I am talking about the vr implementation. I would frankly bite your hand off if FD announced they would implement VR in the same manner as NMS (and still keep hotas support etc etc) bit that is water under the bridge as that has been covered already. If you expect more that is cool. I just want something.

Out of curiosity, how many people are boycotting MSFS 2020 specifically because it's not releasing with VR support at launch either?
Not comparable. VR is confirmed for MSFS 2020 to come along side the Reverb G2.
That said I had zero intention of buying it without VR and every intention of buying it with VR
Same logic I used for NMS, Dirt Rally 2, Early access support or assetto Corsa 2 etc etc etc

If FD made such a firm post launch commitment to ED:O I doubt many vr users would have a problem

The difference is that MS have specifically said they will do VR for the new flight simulator, whereas FDev have said they are REMOVING* it from this product line are still being evasive and or silent on the topic of future VR support.

*many are going to get pedantic and say "oh they aren't removing it they simply arent implementing it" to which I say, VR has been a feature of the 1.X, 2.X & 3.4 updates, or "Dangerous" "Horizons" & "Beyond" seasons therefore it is an existing and long established, possibly even a "core" feature of the game, but it is one that is not going to be a feature in subsequent versions of the game. That is to say that VR was a feature of the game in the past, and is a feature of the game just now, but the next version that is being worked on for the future won't include that feature (VR), ipso facto, they are removing it as a feature.

...Whereas FDev could say exactly the same thing and some would demand proof.
But that's never gonna happen, Frontier don't have the minerals for such an assertive statement as what Microsoft said about VR being added to the new Flight Sim.

When we pressed for that, even enlisted @Arthur Tolmie, the new keen as mustard and seemingly very helpful lead community manager to try and get such clarification and commitment, and even he got stonewalled with evasive non-committal and hollow platitudes that neither confirmed nor repudiated the company's commitment to making VR a part of Odyssey in the future.

That chain of events, where the company stonewalled their new lead CM, was in my opinion actually cringe-worthy, I felt embarrassed for Frontier. The company hadn't long hired Arthur into that job, which is to be top of the tree of the department who liaise between the players/customers and the company, and they wouldn't;t even give him a sentiment nevermind a specific. Sure, the company might not want to pin themselves to a deadline because software development requires fluidic situational project management, and with the COVID situation and its constantly changing restrictions and guidelines etc noone really knows what they are up to... But how hard would it be for the company to have given Arthur the statement "I've good news, but no specifics. After discussing the feedback we have decided to put VR into Odyssey at some point in the future. However we have no specifics or details to share at this point, there might be some more information nearer launch".

This inferred inability for the company to even vaguely and loosely commit to doing something without going into the specifics and making binding statements really screams of weak leadership and a lack of vision, which I might expect in a company run by committee, but not from a company that is over quarter of a century old, has made millions, been floated, and still ran by its founder. And I really wouldn't have expected such vague drifting arising from the lack of a clearly defined tech strategy to be present in a company helmed by someone who is widely recognised in their industry as something of a visionary, and someone who has a good track record with avantgarde technology and extracting the best out of current generation tech.

I've got to agree with @[VR] Mad Mike that the Ice planets look good, but don't look as compelling as the concept art unveiled at Frontier Expo'17. In an SRV in VR I would say you get MORE sense of scale and awe than you will on foot on screen, so like he said, being a VR player, we've already had a true Niel Armstrong moment. However, I'd go as far as to say those who play Odyssey will only get a "Michael Collins" moment looking in from the side lines on a screen rather than a "Neil Armstrong" moment actually "being there" like we would / do in VR.

I also think there was a little bit of "double dipping" recycling the hype associated with getting on to planets which was hyped up in Horizons, however I can see that there would be an element of overlap, and I acknowledge that some of the vistas shown on the new planets in that video are stunning. I think that those new planets would be breathtaking in VR, and as such I hope that mike is wrong, I'm hoping that we manage to persuade them to put VR back into odyssey, and I hope that Odyssey lays the groundwork for more paid updates. I genuinely think that as long as Elite makes money, it will be built on, but if that's all going to be happening in 2d from now on, I won't be experiencing it.

Frontier usually seem to do well with the audio/visual aspect of their games, especially considering the minimum specs they require, but they do tend to lack clear thinking when it comes to gameplay and balancing, so I am expecting not to be disappointed with the new planetary tech. However I do expect to be disappointed by the new FPS, which makes the lack of VR all the more a bitter pill to swallow. I also don’t expect odyssey gamers to be able to instance with horizons players ‘at launch’, but I would love someone to prove otherwise!

Totally agree with you Jay. It is noticeable that since @Arthur Tolmie answered our questions on his last VR post he has gone off the grid. I can imagine starting a new job full of enthusiasm discussing his communities questions with the developers and being fobbed off in the same way we were would have me running back to the job centre asap

yeah got my email today - luckily I have Facebook as I use it for my business but I understand what you are saying
I dug into the details, and it looks like I'll be grandfathered in so I won't need to use Facebook. THANK THE GOOD LORD!!

Starting this October, new users will need Facebook to open an Oculus account. Users who already have an Oculus account will be encouraged to merge it with their Facebook profile but will be able to maintain their existing independent account until 2023. Starting in January 2023, user headsets with non-linked accounts will function but official support will end, meaning some games or apps will no longer be operable.

I just hope the "will be encouraged to merge it with their Facebook profile" won't be some annoying nag screen I have to click "No!" to every single time I use my Rift.

Mark Zuckerberg can go suck a lead pipe.

It is an interesting decision given the number of headsets coming on to the market - I wonder if they have plans to do a lot more with the integration then they are currently saying

It's being met with severe resistance. If they follow through, my Rift S will be my last Oculus device ever. I'll upgrade to a Valve or HP Vive or something else when the day comes.

I hate hardware companies that pull crap like this. No wonder the Amish population is growing! I don't need a Facebook account to ride my horse...
