🐾 Planet Zoo - Update 1.3 coming 25 August 🐾

Another foliage member has been revealed, and this one is huge. So we had the small Eucalyptus species that was spotted earlier on, the Staghorn Fern, and the Australian Grass Tree. I took the picture that Frontier posted and blew it up, and OMG, now you have to excuse me as landscape and foliage is a big part of my life, so i get pretty exited about this reveals, Eucalyptus deglupta (Rainbow Gum) has arrived. By far this is one of the most beautiful trees you could ever spot anywhere. This species is native to Oceania, found in the Philippines, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea. However we have been using it in the zoo world for decades to be center pieces of Australian exhibitions. During the design of Zoo Miami's (formerly Miami MetroZoo at the time) Australian section, management was so impressed with the tree, that it went from one planted specimen to 14 of them thru out the zoo.

That is one beautiful tree. I want one for my garden 😭

There is a lot of silence from Frontier after yesterdays news. I wonder if this is just the calm before the storm, or if a DLC announcement will in fact not take place, I hope this is not the case. I wonder if their time frames have been delayed in any way due to the virus, I understand they are working from home, so it would be unfortunate if this the case. Many companies where their workforce was actually relocated home, have in fact being much more productive working from there. I will keep my fingers crossed and hope that this was the case with Frontier.

Last time the DLC was announced several days after the Free Update notes were released. It might be the same. You never know. They were both available on the same day.

It’s not unusual to not hear from them after 1 day.

You are correct, it is an interesting marketing strategy, since here in North America most industries usually believe that the longer their product is being talked about and hyped up before release the greater interest it peaks. They seem to have a different school of thought when it comes to this, and so far it seems it has work for them. Did the arctic DLC also release the same day as the free update, I somehow do not recall.

If there's a free update and a DLC they are released on the same day, yes

Animal Colour Variation
We're excited to introduce differences in animal colour, which will make it easier to identify individuals around your zoos. We've done so by sticking to known and realistic colours, and by improving upon the general appearance of groups and herds with subtler differences in colour.
We've added a way for you to see colour and pattern information from the Animal Market trading window, to make it easier for you to carry out your breeding and population goals, and to provide our colourblind players with information. This includes the scientific terms for the Colourmorphs we use in-game, such as if an albino is classed as Albino, Leucistic, or simply another colour.

The availability of inheritable Colourmorph genes in the animal market population is now variable per species, in particular:
  • 6% (approx.) of the Jaguar population are now Black Jaguars
  • Bird and Reptile Albinism or Leucism are now more likely than before; in-line with natural results
  • Llama colourmorphs are extremely common, and follow the same breeding rules as albinos, with an additional set of colour variations

In addition to the Colourmorph genetics, your existing zoo animals carry existing genetic information for both colour and pattern. This information applies colour variation on top of the animals existing textures, and allows for subtle and gradual changes in colour between different animals.
When animals breed, their offspring create colour and pattern values in a range around the average of their parents, most often looking similar to at least one of their parents. However, there is now a small chance that colour or pattern will pick a value far away from the parent colour, perhaps looking more like a distant relative.

The team researched animal colour and pattern variation, and found that documentation was rare and highly variable in quality depending on the species. We've done our absolute best to stick to research photo reference, and do them justice. With this in mind, we've tried to avoid colouration that only applies to single, individual animals, as the contrast of colour would begin to look strange in groups.
We have not added colour variation to exhibit animals, partly because their environments are so dense it is harder to distinguish minor variation at a distance. The highly saturated and often very distinct colours and patterns would be more suited to additional Colourmorphs.

Do you think you could add Melanism as well as all these leucistic animals, it's more common in nature as it provides good natural camouflage compared to albino or leucistic animals. even to the point that there's examples in nature of melanistic animals effectively pushing out the original morphs. A good example being Varanus beccarii or the Black Tree Monitor, which started as a green tree monito but the melanistic morphs were more successful to the point there's no longer any Green Tree Monitors on the same island.

Melanism is particularly notable in reptiles, Nile monitor would be a good in game animal to display Melanism. A good none reptile example already exist in the game in the Black Jaguar, Melanistic Lions would also be a good example of an in game animal that could display melanism. Another well known example not in the game but hopefully will be would be a melanistic or Black Indian or African Leopard.

As far as I'm aware, a fully melanistic lion has never actually been documented (even though anecdotal reports do exist), so that wouldn't exactly be realistic. There are plenty of other animals who can be seen in melanistic form, though, and I would love to have a few of those.

Seems they have already implemented how the color will be displayed ingame :)

(it says; light brown fur with white stripes)

Edit: Checked my red pandas in the tradecentre. They had the same thing, and some of them said "bright red", other "dark red" and some "orange red". So far they still all look the same when placing them in a habitat

One last Edit: I really like the fact that they are changing the colors of existing animals in your tradecentre <3 I really do hope that means existing animals in your zoo's will get the same treatment, as I can't seem to find any indication of what color variation an animals have outside of the tradecentre

That's awesome, @Arrakai!! I'm loading my game right now to check which other species have variants in the name. How exciting that it even applies to red pandas and nyala! I feel like Frontier have really gone all out, above and beyond with this - I was one of the people pioneering for colour variations (i.e. yelling about it), and this is not just what I was hoping for, but so much more than I had anticipated. The Planet Zoo team keep proving that they don't simply give us a quick fix for what we want, they really put a lot of passion and effort into giving the community quality content.

That's absolutely great. I need to check my Llamas, Apes and some other Animals later.

Melanistic Lions would also be a good example of an in game animal that could display melanism.
No.
Show me a single Picture of a completely black Lion that wasn't changed in Photoshop or a similar Software. There's only one known Case of a Lion that was partially melanistic

It's only showing in Franchise mode at the moment.

I checked every species and I only found 17 with no new variations (or at least, none yet - they could still be rolling them out or updating them). Of those, there are maybe 5 animals I would have thought would have variations, but those might still come yet. I'm also wondering if some bigger inclusions could come on release, rather than being written in now.

Absolutely amazed by how many animals have variations, and how many most species have! I can't wait to see them in game, it's going to be phenomenal!

Still have my fingers crossed for black wolves, king cheetahs and tabby bengals, since I haven't seen them written in yet.

Side note: I have no idea how programming works - how is Frontier adding new things into the game without my game having any updates? Is it through the server? So curious...

I suppose that something like king cheetahs may not be common enough to include them. I though that there were just around 20 in wild and 50 in captivity so it might look weird if a zoo would have many of them. But I am not expert, feel free to correct me. :)

can we have a visitor mode to visit our park like a visitor and be able to download our music in planet zoo at the same time to improve the speaker system to play the music please !!! I ask that... this game is extraordinary
