In the old days I would use a map. Around LA, we're I learned to fly, the map was pretty cluttered but I knew my way around the LA basin pretty well.
When I got out of the Navy and moved to Alabama, the reverse was the issue. Not enough land marks, the old VOR radials were priceless back then.

Funny though, flying around Central Alabama isn't as hard as it was when I first moved here.

Sorry if I seemed patronizing.

I flew lots of NDB approaches back in the day, and the back-course ones too. Civilian radio stations on the ADF were invaluable, in my time. :)

Well, I decided to look at my (old) neighborhood in the UK... The roads are very accurate, but where my house is (and I am pretty sure it's still there as it's rented out lol) there seems to be a rather large office block. :p

It's the one in the center of the screenshot, which is in fact a row of terraced houses, similar to the other side...

Actually kind of similar to the town I currently live in in the US. Roads are spot on, but individual houses seem to be from another era entirely, and possibly from a completely different part of the US in terms of the look / design...

Still, having lots of fun with the sim, and just set up an old TrackIR that I had pre the VR days which is kind of cool, if perhaps a bit jerky.

And for Ralph Vargr... Biggin Hill. :)

Where are the Spitfires? :)

Spent the past couple hours just exploring the procedural cloudscapes. Laying with a controller, losing myself, maybe the most relaxing two hours I've spent in a long time. Flying into a sunset that never seems to end. I've always enjoyed exploring procedural worlds. Flying amongst the clouds has been the most enjoyable it's ever been.

I haven’t played ED for years but just had to register to the forum because of this thread. Too many posts where I had wanted to press the like button.

Still waiting for my copy of the game. A boxed Premier Deluxe arriving by Monday.

I’ve owned all the FS versions since Sublogic’s FS for C64. Never really spent much time with them but hopefully this will be an exception. It has so much potential.

I've been on the MSFS train since the late 1980s. Just on FSX I have many 1000s of hours, 1000s of landings, 100s of rotary wing (helicopter) hours. Multi-engine, single engine, jets, helis. I love flying! But with bad colour vision I could never be a pilot! 😕

Just landed at Area 51. Even just plain old desert looks beautiful in this sim, such a far cry from the beige monotony of FSX.

This is why I`m sticking with the new MSFS and for now getting rid of my Prepar3d to free some SSD space, I like to fly over Africa and Middle East or Mojave desert as they finally are not generic copy paste dune textures!

Good example, try to visit Craters of Moon Park in the USA:

Departure: KPIH Pocatello Rgnl

Pretty Destination: KSUN Friedman Memorial

I have this area in Preapr3d redone via ORBX and... uh I feel I invested my money in to prematurely...

Beautiful shots. The weather in this is insane isn't it. I don't know how they managed - adding even AI traffic for me results in some serious performance issues, but not even live weather affects performance for me even by a single frame. Try that in FSX and it turned into a slideshow.

It's probably not fair to compare them as I think FSX is not built for modern multicore CPUs, but still, I was never able to run a flightsim at a solid 60fps while looking this good. And while I came across various visual glitches, given the scope of it all I can totally forgive those.

The live weather (when it works) is so freaking amazing. I've been lucky that my neck of the woods has been giving me some interesting weather to try out, and FS does an amazing job at replicating what I see in the sky IRL.

As for scenery glitches, I am hopeful they will be fixed. My sightseeing tours in the little Cub have been a mix of amazement and disappointment. But when I fly a regular commuter flight between two airports "proper-like", just taking in the scenery along the route, I'm blown away. It feels like the real deal! I'm not a pilot, but I've flown enough as a passenger in different planes to have something to compare to. The only thing missing is the bumps from turbulence. Maybe I can hook some hydraulics to my chair ;)

The only thing missing for me is that sick feeling in the pit of your stomach when the plane hits an air pocket. Maybe VR will fix that. ;)

Also, if you want good live weather: UK.

How do you know which one is fake? :)
Again, as posted by one of the 3rd party developers, the very basics how the airflow and physics are modelled are a giant leap ahead of the competition - so they will be able to do much better.
Having said that, I'm not a pilot and enjoying with default planes through hard settings, as is.

What I was saying (should be more precise) most of the aircrafts doesnt give me (pilot that sits in his comfy room) decent feedback on whats going on. For example when I`m trying to stress the Cessna Jet it just smoothly goes in to "you crashed" screen, no pit shaking, no noise - something that DCS plane devs really master to give you feedback on whats going on with the airframe.
