VR support 'not at launch' for Odyssey

Nice write up Matty :)

(FWIW, the experimental branch proposal is now the second most upvoted suggestion on record. And has a healthy crop of unique +1 responses. I reckon we’re still on their radar at least ;))
Whats sad about that is it just backs up the the ascertion that there is a very large portion of the player base who plays ED in VR ... more than large enough for the Fdevs to have justifiably built VR into Odyssey for release.

Anyone tried to get pancake Elite working in VorpX yet? Might be a less-than-ideal solution, but still a solution.
That would actually be quite hard to do as you'd need to bypass the baked in VR support within elite to inject the janky VR support "hack" from VorpX. You will probably find people working on it the minute Odyssey Beta is released, however I suspect the talent pool for that campaign will be reduced in numbers as I know there is a large section of the VR community who won't buy Odyssey without VR #noVRnoBuy so there will be significantly less VR players bet testing Odyssey, significantly reducing the number of possible contributors to an Odyssey VorpX configuration being developed.

Although I‘ve only tried a handful of games with VorpX a couple of years back, I’ll certainly give VREDO a try if there’s no further info than “not at launch” prior to the release - I’ll be getting Odyssey as part of my KS pledge anyway, so it can’t hurt to have a looksie. Looks like VorpX is still getting updates, so we may have a bit of luck with it.

Guys like yourself who have effectively already paid for Odyssey are our best hope of getting VorpX working. However, I've got to admit, that if you do get VorpX working on Odyssey, I'd still be conflicted about it. Given I'm not a kickstarter / lifetime pass holder, the only way I would get Odyssey would be to purchase it, but purchasing it to play in vorpX would effectively be condoning frontier's decision to nix VR in, yet by not buying I would be denying myself a game I've really wanted for a long long time.

The VorpX approach is not completely farfetched, but largely relies on EDO maintaining support for 3D glasses (Has anyone asked FDEV about that?). Otherwise it's not remotely certain you could get the game to display in stereo even through VorpX. Getting headlook to work should be trivial, at least in 2DOF, as support for that is not likely to go away.
Finally, we have to understand VorpX relies on DLL injection, which is often no-no in multiplayer games, due to cheat detection. But I'm not sure FDEV really cares about that.

What's the current status with VorpX?
I tried it a couple of years ago but I was disappointed. It was not real 3D, was just a virtual desktop zoomed in your face with head tracking. Is it better now?

As Captain N said, it depends on the game - there are several different display methods ranging from “home theatre” style stuff (like you described) to “geometry 3D” which is the closest to native VR.

There are other in-between methods, like having a big virtual 3D TV or a 2D screen wrapped around your head, and there are usually issues with things like HUDs being just out of view (though workarounds like “edgepeek” help mitigate these). One thing I found in Geo3D games like the original Crysis, is that your weapons/arms/legs look comedy-huge :)

VorpX, I’d say, requires a more powerful PC than standard VR, so I’m probably going to wait until my next graphics card upgrade before messing with it again. It also requires a fair bit of tinkering with on a per-game basis, so not something you’d want if you’re a more plug&play kind of user. Looking at the forums though, it’s still getting regular updates (which look to include performance gains) and has an active community - I’ve just been looking at threads regarding Death Stranding in 3D mode and RDR2 in full VR, which certainly piqued my piqueness.

I’ll have my fingers crossed for this, though only the little & ring fingers - index & middle finger-cross is reserved for FDev pledging to native VR support sometime in 2021 🤞

I really hope that in the next future all videogames will have a basic native support for VR. Something pre-compiled in the directX or similar.
Then things like this thread of 170 pages will be history and there will be no concerns anymore for VR.

To many of the players "whining" FD may as well be turning the servers off if they don't release vr support.
I imagine non VR players would whine quite loudly if ED:O went VR only..... But to me at least ED dropping VR is that big a deal. Yes I COULD play on a monitor. But equally I could play it at 640x480 with CGA visuals... It doesn't mean I would want to if FD decided to only support that for ED:O

Besides a large percentage of posts in this thread has been responding to non VR players telling VR users how impossible it is to have FPS feet in VR and other nonsense

That said I agree. I don't think FD are reading this thread any more

I bought FS2020 on Friday and while it’s pretty, it’s basically unplayable for me because I’ve gotten so used to playing simulators in VR.

People without VR just don’t seem to understand what I gigantic step backwards it is to go from VR to a monitor. I didn’t mind taking the plunge and buying it without VR support because Microsoft have COMMITTED to adding VR as a top priority and I’m going to love it then.

From my experience with FS2020 I know there is not way I’ll want to play EDO on a monitor.
