The Training Mission for Combat is as about as much use as the Travel and Landing TM. I need to learn to at least follow the combatant first. Any suggestions as to useful missions on the internet ? Thanks
It is, at least if you master a few skills (that aren't that hard to master), such as winning the interdiction mini-game (which against NPCs becomes trivially easy almost instantly unless you're flying a galactic garbage scow like the Anaconda or T-9) and just sitting tight when dropping into a mining hot spot until the pirates leave (which they always will unless you have something other than limpets on board). My interest in any form of combat is zero. I only thought I better learn something just in case I need to defend myself. However, maybe I can avoid any form of combat. I won't be playing multi-play, and more than happy to play in the SOLO Mode if that assists in avoiding combat. I wish to explore, map and record. Avoiding any combat, unless forced to defend myself. If this is possible, I don't need to learn how to shoot at anything. Is that possible?
No, there is not (currently, probably not ever) such a craft, every ship has hardpoints for weapons and can be fitted with cargo space. Its more than likely I will buy (if available) a totally unarmed, non-armable, non-cargo holding craft. Is there such a craft ?
That would be my aim. Empty Hard points and no cargo points. Yes ?BUT: you can choose to not fit either weapons or cargo space.![]()
Yes, empty hardpoints and no cargo modules. That would be my aim. Empty Hard points and no cargo points. Yes ?
I'm not even interested in gain credits, or upgrading my ship UNLESS it stops me from getting to any and all points of the Galaxy. Is that the case ? That is, it will stop me ?
I recall a couple that kind of endeavours, but IIRC they both optimised their builds for range, just without engineering, so not entirely stock Sideys.Anything is possibly. A Cmdr once traversed the galaxy in a stock sidewinder.
Commendable start to your journey Cmdr.
Rochester: " ....... evade any form of unnecessary aggression, role-playing, it is possible, yet challenging."
Great!
Rochester: " .....The primary threats are other Cmdrs, but only within open, and only within certain core systems at certain times, otherwise the galaxy is pretty peaceful if you are aware of your surroundings."
But what about in SOLO ? There shouldn't be any other Cmdrs ......
Rochester: " ...... and obtaining a fast ship will go a long way in evading aggression. I played for years like this and was very happy, mostly exploring. ...... If you're trying to evade aggression, sometimes the best defense is to learn how to run away. "
Yes ..... understand. I'd rather not have to run, but it's better than having to fight .....
Rochester: "....... ED galaxy is dangerous, that's true, but it's not mandatory."
Good. And that's why I'm here.I only know of one flight sim that is totally non-combat and that I think is called "SpaceEngine".
Rochester: ".... .... I'm back into exploring, if I get interdicted I simply evade by boosting and warping out ...... "
Nice.![]()
If you left your Sidewinder just as it came except for selling the weapons and cargo rack you would be unable to reach any star 9 light years away or more, this would soon stop you getting to places. That would be my aim. Empty Hard points and no cargo points. Yes ?

Thanks for the heads-up.aRJay said: "If you left your Sidewinder just as it came except for selling the weapons and cargo rack you would be unable to reach any star 9 light years away or more, this would soon stop you getting to places."
So are you saying "Empty Hard Points and no cargo points" WILL stop me from getting to places ?
aRJay said: However by replacing core modules with the lighter D grade units and the FSD with the A grade, also changing the shield for a size 1 and fitting a 2A fuel scoop you could reach any star up to around 21 light-years away. With a setup like that, you could reach most places eventually but will still find inaccessible systems quite often.
I need to look at this further. Currently, many of the terms you've used, mean nothing to me but that's ok ......
Hmmmm ...... I have some thinking to do ........ thanks.Yes, empty hardpoints and no cargo modules.
Not upgrading your ship and/or changing ship, plus not engineering modules, will stop you from going to some remote or otherwise hard to access points in the Galaxy, at least if you want to go there by yourself.
Friendly fleet carrier can get you to those places too.
Some pointers to 'getting to places' in this thread:
and of course, in the Exploration subforum.Exploration tips for a noob?
Sorry if this is a turbo-noob topic, but I've been playing Solo/Private group to get a feel for the game; now that I'm comfortable with it, I'd like to start playing in Open, and I'm trying to decide my play style, and I'm leaning towards peaceful exploration/science. I've seen a few threads...forums.frontier.co.uk
As purchased the Sidewinder has a jump range of approximately 8 light years, getting rid of the weapons and the cargo rack will gain it another 0.5 light years. There are a lot of places where the stars are further apart than that.So are you saying "Empty Hard Points and no cargo points" WILL stop me from getting to places ?
So I presume there are still places that are more than 13 light years away (apart) ?As purchased the Sidewinder has a jump range of approximately 8 light years, getting rid of the weapons and the cargo rack will gain it another 0.5 light years. There are a lot of places where the stars are further apart than that.
Changing all the modules left on the Sidewinder for D rated ones will reduce the mass enough so you can jump approximately 13 light years.
