"The Stones"

Aaaaand now I realize that "top of the line" is an English colloquialism,so very different phrases might be used in the translated logs.
Everyone's favourite "translation vs interpretation"

It's why i never go too deep with the layers of tinfoil. The puzzles in Elite have never been particularly complex.... it's just identifying how to start them that is tricky.

Fwiw, haven't we seen this kind of message elsewhere before?

I still insist that all this "alternate world event" is taking place associated with the use of Raxxla by Goids in our time

My thought is that the Listening post was supposed to be a clue to get us to Coalsack.

We've been told we're missing something, i'm guessing its either the listening post decrypt, a Jump destination for the Adamastor after HIP 69200 and before the switch to autopilot and sublight, or an intermediary arrival point in between Chukchack and the listening post (the ghost ship has a log that is just "28 ...: ..." probably from 28 October, 31111)

At some point prior to October 3111 Azimuth Biochemicals is made aware of Thargoid Barnacles in the Coalsack nebula and dispatches a survey team that includes both Scientists and Mercenary soldiers (possible link to The Club or a precursor to INRA implied). Azimuth has at least 2 megaships, one the transport for the survey team to Musca Dark Region PJ-P B6-1, second the Adamastor

October 13, 3111 - Research team arrives at Musca Dark Region PJ-P B6-1. Survey site appears to have been chosen for proximity to a Thargoid Barnacle
-(per the survey site log dated 20 October 3111)

October 20, 3111 - 1st log from Penelope Carver. Survey team finds the wrecked Interceptor and brings an Alien Object back (probably a Thargoid Sensor)
-(survey site log dated 20 October 3111)

October 26, 3111 - the Adamastor (a Megaship outfitted for clandestine operations) leaves Chukchak, initially headed in the direction of Barnard's loop (seemingly on a mission unrelated to Musca Dark Region PJ-P B6-1)
-(Ghost ship log and Local Galnet article at Chukchack)

October 27, 3111 - 2nd log from Penelope Carver. Carver reports concerns over Murphy and his obsession with the "Stones" (the barnacle). Survey team is having issues containing the Alien Object brought back from the crashed Interceptor and reports psychological effects of proximity exposure to the Alien Object. Survey team is instructed to Cease communication and wait for the arrival of the Adamastor for extraction of the Alien Object
-(survey site log date 27 October 3111)

October 28, 3111 - corrupted log entry from Ghost ship, Implies the Adamastor jumped somewhere important enough for the Crew to leave a log.

October 29, 3111 - Adamastor arrives at Synuefe XE-Y C17-7 3 and checks the Listening Post in this system, changing route to Musca Dark Region PJ-P B6-1 instead of their original destination.
-(Local Galnet article at Chukchack suggests possible stops at HIP 33386 and HIP 39748, which are in a direct line towards Barnard's Loop from Chukchack, this info combined with the Ghost ship log for this date referencing a K class star with 11 planets is the clue to identify Synuefe XE-Y C17-7 3)
-(Listening post data at this point is not decrypted, but once decrypted, along with the clue from the Ghost ship log for M class star with at least one Metal body, should point to Musca Dark Region PJ-P B6-1 3)

October 30, 3111 - Carver reports the Alien Object has become "Noisy," suspects crashed Interceptor was not alone, O'Keefe reports seeing another Interceptor warp into the sky above the Barnacle near the Survey site, interact with the Barnacle and warp out, Murphey corroborates but is clearly no longer fully sane. Adamastor arrives at Musca Dark Region PJ-P B6-1. and evacuates half of the Survey team and Mercenaries. The Mercenaries appear to Execute some of the Survey team and use explosives to destroy data at the survey installation. The evacuation is interrupted by a Thargoid attack, causing the Adamastor to declare an emergency and leave the system before finishing evacuation of the Mercenaries. The Adamastor crew does not tell the evacuated Survey team and mercenaries of the Thargoid attack. Murphey is left behind and survives the Thargoid attack, and describes some of the Mercenaries who were left behind being abducted by the Thargoid ship.
-(Ghost ship log, Survey site log date 30 October, 3111, Undated Survey site Log)

October 31, 3111 Adamastor arrives at HIP 69200 experiencing ship-wide system failures due to effects of Alien Object. Carver takes advantage of failure of Security system to steal one of the ship's Sidewinders. Carver was waiting for Survey team members Sheng and O'Keefe, but shooting breaks out aboard the Adamastor as the jump drive comes back online and she launches alone, but ultimately crashes on one of the planets in system.
-(Ghost ship log, crashed sidewinder log)

After the events of October 31 3111 the Adamastor jumps to an unknown system, possibly multiple, before complete failure of the Jump drive and the remaining Crew, Mercenaries and Survey team members abandon ship via the remaining Sidewinders and escape pods. (maybe another Thargoid attack? did they successfully jump to another system, or were they Hyperdicted? unclear). The Adamastor ultimately begins route back to Chukchack at sublight speeds, passing through HIP 65201, HIP 64011, and HIP 61595.

October 26, 3306 - a ancient Transmission is reported being received with its origin pointing in the direction of the Coalsack Nebula. the transmission is cryptic, referencing "the Stones" and someone watching them.

October 29, 3306
- the Adamastor is found in system at Chukchack on a crash course for Chukchack 5 B. Salvage teams rescue the ship to a stable orbit, but the reinforced cargo hold is destroyed as power systems overloaded in the process. The Ships Data drives have been wiped, but a corrupted file can be downloaded by scanning data points on the derelict ship. All escape pots have been launched, along with any secondary ships. Of specific note, several Airlocks were opened from the inside, but nothing is reported of potential boarding or forced entry to the ship.
-Local Chukchack Galnet reports on the ship, with a reported departure date and direction, and information about the Corporate ownership of the vessel.
-a Sidewinder is found crashed on HIP 69200 with a log from Penelope Carver
-A Geological Survey site is found on Musca Dark Region PJ-P B6-1 3 near a Thargoid Barnacle. Several logs are found from the Survey team, lead by Penelope Carver.
-Numerous additional Barnacle sites are found on the planet along with multiple Bark mound sites.
-At the Barnacle site near the Survey site a wrecked SRV is found. The SRV has a corrupted log and an Occupied Escape pod is found nearby.

I think its just a matter of time before the Listening post is Decrypted, so lets look at the other two potential mysteries

- Re The corrupted ghost ship log that is probably from October 28: There's a lot of space between Chukchack and Synuefe XE-Y C17-7 3 to look for an arrival on October 28. We do have 2 systems referenced from the local Galnet article at Chukchack, but so far nobody's found anything at either one (all i found were fleet carriers). There's also a lot of distance between Chukchack and Synuefe XE-Y C17-7 3, its a BIG haystack to search for a needle. We know the Adamastor had a 30 ly jump range, i guess someone could do the math to figure out how many Jumps it would take to get from Chukchack on October 26 to Synuefe XE-Y C17-7 3 on October 29 and then do the math to figure out the systems that the Adamastor could have jumped through on October 28. But from my rough math, the amount of time the Adamastor took to get from Chukchack to Synuefe XE-Y C17-7 3 and the time it took to get from Synuefe XE-Y C17-7 3 to Musca Dark Region PJ-P B6-1 3 don't seem to share the same jump rate (ie the trip from Synuefe XE-Y C17-7 3 to Musca Dark Region PJ-P B6-1 3 seems much faster than the jump rate from Chukchack to Synuefe XE-Y C17-7 3.

-Re: the Jump from HIP 69200: Has anyone done a search of systems inside a 30 ly jump range of hip 69200 that would get the Adamastor on the sub-light path through Hip 65201, HIP 64011, and HIP 61595 on route back to Chukchan?

The last entry in this, potential cipher, is 3234. If there is any chance it is a keyed character swap, 4 letter words with 2 similar letters might be a clue. babe, pope, memo, , dude, gage, lily, and pipe.

I just had a thought:

Why exactly was it so important for us to know that Azimuth Biochemicals was later bought by Pharmasapien? The latter company was not involved with the Adamastor, the company got bought after the ship vanished...

...unless there's an abandoned settlement in Chukchan that belonged to Pharmasapien and may provide us with the cypher we need to decrypt that message. (Still at the LP, so no chance of checking that right now).

Okay, I checked every landable body in Chukchan, just in case. Got nothing.

Just checked, and the Thargoid probe & sensor have no reaction to the ghost ship, as if that's a surprise to anybody.
The boys just purr away, but the probe is an angry boy if you honk at him, as usual.

So nobody has been able to get anything new after scanning the LP? Like it's not a key to anything hackable or scannable? i tested it on the ghost ship in chan but nothing

So is important that the Listening Post in Synuefe XE-Y C17-7 is pointed in the general direction of Barnard's Loop? This is my first mystery since I've started playing and it's all so cool to see play out. If the Ghost Ship was heading that way, before it was rerouted, could there be a hidden base there? Kind of grasping at straws here, but I'm sitting here at the LP wondering why it's facing away from the bubble.

If there is, it'll be hard to find, 99% of the systems out there are permit locked still.

Not really. Barnard's loop itself is actually fairly open... it's just going it to horsehead that gets locked up. Most of the barriers in the region are jumpable in a decent range ship with premium jumponium.

That said, i went out there and nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

On an aside. I'm still hooked up on the west / ouest translation thing. It means the rest of the message resolves to something common to (all other localised languages). If that's the only thing that is "non encoded", a lot can be derived from that

  • likely it's not encoded because of the translation issue.
  • if the message can be "unencoded" that easily, it's a simple substitution/ transformation encoding, nothing complex.
  • if it all translates to something common across all localisations, it's not going to be anything beyond systems, planets and coordinates.
  • throw all that together... are there system names which have west in them which are ouest in the french localisation? All i can think of is Veil West, but that seems way out.
