ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

The view out of the canopy is a little jagged, are you arms well rendered.
Have you tried blur, I've got it turned off and is your oculus quality set to max, you need that set to max.
Have you set your IPD?

Hey everyone.

I've reported a bug to FD and they want me to take a video to demonstrate it. It's a Rift specific bug. What is the easiest way for me to record video?

I've got an nVidia 770 so I have Shadowplay, but I've seen people report it doesn't work with the Rift.

What do you recommend (the least intrusive way, the better - I want to keep this gaming rig "clean").

What bug do you want to report? Maybe there's already some video?

Hey mate, will redo my ipd now and turn off blur, oculus quality is on max. I'm getting judder too and it makes me feel kinda nauseous so im gonna set my graphics quality to low and see if it helps.

Result*

Judders are still there, and resolution is just too harsh to endure for more than a few minutes. I don't get it, the demos are clean and smooth compared to elite.

Hi,

Trying to catch up but this thread is humongous, are the first couple of posts still relevant and up to date for installing today's DK2? Or is there anything additional required or that I do not need to do in there?

I have a feeling I'm resilient to the stutter, get a little, but it calms down. Think the stutter is the worsted, as your eyes cannot even get adjusted to the resolution.

Hi BigPickle,

Sorry if I missed it but what graphics card do you have?

The underlying issue for most is it's a Dev kit running Beta software. Whilst for me the demos run smooth and are technically amazing - I would still consider them low(ish) resolution.

I guess what's 'playable' is a matter of opinion. As mentioned by others because Elite Dangerous is beta, they are busy adding content so performance is probably lower on the list. I would consider my graphics card to be medium range (GTX 770) but can only hit the target 75 FPS with Graphics preset = Low and Oculus quality = middle of the slider. To me this looks very low resolution (think 1980's game), but I just had fun playing for a couple of hours and didn't get judder / motion sickness.

For a better ED experience now I have considered buying a new £500 graphics card. However IMHO Alien Isolation indicates on release ED could be a lot better. Personally I would rather wait to see what I will need for Oculus Rift CV1 and in the mean time hopefully the card cost will come down

I use a 7970 not looked at my FPS but go for playability , your 770 should be 15/20ish per cent better with no need to lower the oculus quality?

I probably didn't express myself very well, but guess 'playability' is a personal thing? There may well be lots of DK2 players who are not hitting 75 FPS with graphics default or oculus quality turned up and are very happy. When I was just sat in the hanger with oculus quality turned up to full, my FPS dropped to 56 and instant judder. Being a light weight this made me feel a bit drunk :D

Smile. I know what you mean, its difficult to phrase it in a forum environment, but sometimes on a low sweep landing I get the rollercoaster effect. :D

I have a GTX760. plenty of ram etc.

I can accept the rez without the judder, it just kills and makes me feel sick. If im honest im very disappointment with the lack of support and in general with oculus, it is a total **** just to get anything working on it. Personally I believe trying to develop on it would be pure hell, sickening one at that

Hi BigPickle just a camera thought, I'm at well beyond the max camera distance 2.2 or 2.4m 6/7 foot excuse the maths.

I know this is a bit OT for this thread but fellow rifters, I thought I would share a post I made on another forum (cut and paste job)

Assetto corsa in VR DK2

holy hell... this is amazing!!! . As a vr experience its up there with elite imo

lots of people having issues but i followed these instructions to the letter... on my modest rig (GTX670 OC), on low detail and in practice mode (so no other cars) it is a flawless experience. my rig may struggle with cars tho!.

going to try upping the settings a bit, but wow! once the rift resolution goes up this will be a game changer.

thanks to the poster who put this on the rift forums (n8rockerasu)

All right. I think I've got this working about as good as Kunos did, haha.

1. Set DK2 to Extended and make it your Primary monitor.
2. Use Shift+Win+left/right arrows to move all your goodies back to your main monitor (Logitech profiler, Steam client, etc).
3. Launch Assetto Corsa
4. Confirm that menu is loading up on your DK2. Once it does, use Shift+Win+left/right arrows to move the menu back to your main monitor. This will put the menu in windowed mode, but you can just double click the bar at the top to make it fullscreen again.
5. Go into the Assetto Corsa video settings. Choose "Oculus Rift" as your rendering mode. Change your resolution to 1920x1080 75hz (mine actually said 74hz for some reason, but whatever)
6. Lower any graphical settings that you think you need to. Remember, better to have lower visuals than a choppy framerate.
7. Launch race.

Race should load up on your DK2, and you can drive immediately. This threw me off at first because in the past you had to click the "Begin Race" icon or whatever. But that doesn't seem to be the case here. Just shift and go. At least that's how it works in practice anyway. Haven't tried a real race yet.

Recenter view = Control + Space

edit.... jesus..... just upped the detail to almost full.... (but shadows on medium) a couple of stutters on the hill climb, but the type 49 on spa is something else. I actually felt nervous appraching the bends.... you just do not get the feeling of how close to the ground you are with a screen imo, but in the rift i feel i can put my hand out and touch the road.

mental!......

I cant imagine it will run this well with other cars, but that will have to be for another night.

edit 2
many are saying it isnt 3D and it is just rendering in 2D.

I dunno... not convinced, I was looking at things like the car lock on the door and it looked 3D to me. I will have to check out closer another time but it had me fooled if so. :/

too complicated.
I already aave AS but I think I will wait untill they release a proper implementation of the DK2.

It's very poorly implemented in my opinion. Scale is terrible, 3d is not very pronounced if it's there at all, no menu integration, have to kill the program to exit a race, no 3d mirrors.... Etc. not worth bothering with at the moment. LFS is so much better in the rift.

THanks every one for your replies I will give all those suggestions a go at the weekend. THANK YOU.

Another question....errmm theres nothing in the little manual booklet, and I cant find in OR site....
..
Can some one explain this IPD thingy, and ,maybe that "might be part of the problem to ?????

I've played around with the lens 'adjustment-distance ' both on the head set and matching it in the sdk with the slider bar. ( theres no difference ,(( aside from feeling a bit giddy when I change the "experimental 3d settings bar in the elite options....)

Again,
Thank you , to everyone who has offered help and advice.

It renders 960×1080 per each eye

It displays 960x1080 per eye with a total screen resolution of 1920x1080 but what most people don't seem to know is that the (recommended) render target size for DK2 is 2364x1461! That is to compensate for the warping and wide FOV.

So the performance issues people see with ED are just perfectly normal. That's a pretty tough resolution for most mid-range PCs.

We will see what driver improvements Oculus has talked/tweeted about and what they can achieve with Asynchronous Timewarp.

Seriously, please bear in mind that this is a Development Kit and is targeted at developers or die-hard enthusiasts. It won't be a plug & play thingy.

That said, all your questions are answered here: https://developer.oculusvr.com/?action=doc ;)
