VR support 'not at launch' for Odyssey

In all honesty I have a feeling that they decided early on to simply drop VR then for some reason (maybe they thought the noise from the forum / Reddit outbusts etc would leak to the wider press and create a negative buzz around Odyssey), they put it back in, since the cockpit stuff was already baked in whereas the walking around stuff would need to be implemented.
I think they probably will add it in down the line but Fdev (no offense guys - you still built an award winning fly a spaceship in VR and be a space trucker / ganker / fly with friends game), are <redacted> slow at developing - well, anything in the game (still missing orbit lines in the FSS and the planetary search zone thing is still borked)...

My wish is they would hook up with the NMS company and share tech with each other (they live pretty close to each other - it could totally work), then Fdev could bring us more landable planets (@ speed) and Hello Games could implement an actual space simulation; orbiting planets, stars and whatnot.
Whilst art style NMS is nothing like ED I too think their legs implementation would likely work in ED. ,(Obviously the free movement not teleport). It also shows that despite what some say on these threads, VR users CAN exist quite happily with monitor players in 1st person games.

After a disasterous launch HG are industry leaders in how to support a game post release (regardless of if the game NMS is your bag or not). I see now they have announced yet another free expansion with increased visual fidelity for the new consoles and pc. I can't wait,.

Yes, they certainly seem like a much better company - from the gamer's perspective.

They could give me their next 5 products free and I still would have no trust or respect for them. NMS was not what I paid for and not what I was told I was getting. It may be fixed now, but they shafted me and lost my trust.

Plenty of games release in an unfinished state , not really having all of the features promised pre launch..... That being said you are the customer so it's your choice

True enough, it's not the only broken game I've bought on release. NMS was the only one that had major features missing and made me check I wasn't playing a beta. It also ran like a slug.

Oh they aren't slow by any means - look at how many complete games FDev released since 2016. It's just their business priorities lie elsewhere :p

How does it feel to be so stubborn in their beliefs that after five years of free, substantial updates you still refuse to play it? It's totally your right of course, but I've seen the same "righteous anger" before in some people refusing to try X-Rebirth after patches despite it being a pretty good X-series game. You simply deprive yourself of a nice game experience because of what happened 5 years ago. GG WP, I guess.

If you somehow missed HOW BIG No Man's Sky had grown, here's a little refresher:

I'd love if people applied the same pressure on FDevs on overpromised and underdelivered features. We probably would have much better game by now.

Yes.. the initial release was a travesty compared to the pre-release hype.
Since then, they seem to have quietly reformed/improved, which is not a claim that can be made for all game publishers.
Of course, I can understand why those bitten by the first release are unwilling to give Hello Games a second chance.

We also should never be accepting of that. Pre-orders and blind faith have allowed the industry to become extremely anti-consumer. Everything is released as an unfinished mess now it seems, while charging for a finished product.

While I partially agree with that, I think the issue is more complicated. As we moved outside games on cd-roms to dvd-sized programs to software behemots weighting over a 100 gigabytes, it's unavoidable. It's not like the companies want to push the worst version of the product by cheapest means, it's that you cannot test reliably for all these hardware and software configurations out there. You shouldn't pre-order because buying into unreleased product is dumb, but expect zero-day patches and patches before release. It's nice to be part of the release buzz, but frankly it is almost always connected with release bugs eating into your experience. Is it worth it? If lots of your friends play the game, yes. But if not? It's better to wait until the game is in stable condition. Usually you're getting what QA deemed to be working on the majority of testing platforms, with non-critical bugs noticed while testing but scheduled to be fixed at a later stage/update.

A few bugs here and there is one thing. Games are being released at full price completely broken and far from finished.

Fallout 76, Mass Effect Andromeda, CoD WW2, Batman Arkham City, Final Fantasy 14, No Man's Sky, and Anthem are prime examples. We should not be paying full price for an unfinished product. A lot of games are barely in an alpha state when they're released at full price.

It is becoming the industry standard in the AAA market, and we as consumers suffer.

These two were failed projects which were pushed out of the door for some closure. Bugthesda just didn't want to let go of the corpse tbh. Which brings us to previous point of "We Do Not Preorder" :D There's still blips of Anthem here and there, but basically it went almost as dark as No Man's Sky once went.

it hurts so bad!

Interesting comments from the Playstation CEO about VR and how they don't think it's mainstream yet and is a ways of being so. And there will be no new VR gear for the PS5

The perfect attitude to ensure it never will be mainstream...
The actual quote might be helpful:

“I think we’re more than a few minutes from the future of VR,” Ryan said. “PlayStation believes in VR. Sony believes in VR, and we definitely believe at some point in the future, VR will represent a meaningful component of interactive entertainment. Will it be this year? No. Will it be next year? No. But will it come at some stage? We believe that. And we’re very pleased with all the experience that we’ve gained with PlayStation VR, and we look forwarding to seeing where that takes us in the future.”

...doesn’t seem that negative to me, just that PSVR2 will be 2022 or later.

"PlayStation believes in VR. Sony believes in VR, and we definitely believe at some point in the future, VR will represent a meaningful component of interactive entertainment" but we'll still leave it to others to develop it further.

VR isn't a religion, it's a technology and if it's not supported it'll never go anywhere regardless of how many people believe in it. I mean if belief worked like that...

Well Sony are sending free camera adapters to PSVR users for their PS5’s, so they seem to want players to keep using the tech. From what I’ve read on other sites PSVR2 is an expected thing by VR devs, just not for a while yet.
Also, Sony Corp in Japan were advertising jobs in August of this year, with the listing stating (via Google Translate): “We are developing a next-generation VR head mounted display,” so there is that.

I think the Playstation CEO is just saying this so they can continue the VR console monopoly and discourage XBOX from investing on VR (as there are rumours circulating that XBOX is developing it's own VR). Come to think of it, what do they lose if they say this? None, but they gain eveything by discouraging competition while continue to enjoying the benefit of console vr monopoly.

I think they are saying this so that they don't have to bother investing a ton load of money into developing another commercially released VR headset, whilst they can still continue to sell and support the current model, which by all accounts is still quite serviceable. The lack of a new higher resolution HMD can partly be made up for with the extra graphical power the new console can provide. There may well be some PS5 VR exclusive titles for instance. I'm sure they're still researching VR in the background, as the cost of continued VR research is small beans compared to the cost of putting out another product onto the global market.
