Elite Dangerous (incl. Horizons) will be free to keep via Epic store from 19th November (offer available for a week)

A friend just got his first copy of E: D via Epic Games. No problems apart from a reboot to get everything up and running.
Update: Even with the added introduction, FDs inability to map keybindings to standard controllers has lost them yet another potential player.

As my friend said: If FD can't configure a working initial setup for keybindings for their own game, how am I expected to map keys to functions I don't yet understand?

He couldn't be bothered to spend more time trying to suss out a supposed leisure activity.

And I could only agree. It really is sad to see a gorgeous game buried in an incomplete, illogical keybinding mess. Why FD haven't seen fit to supply their own game with fully working default keybindings for standard controllers will always be beyond me. FD seem to insist on making their game as inaccessible as possible. Oh well. :/

They did.
Their standard controllers are kb+m on the PC and gamepads everywhere else (which also sort of work on the PC, until you boost into the station wall when all you wanted to do was lower the landing gear...).

He was using a gamepad on pc and it was not fully mapped.

Wow,

So I get this game for free on Epic, link my account, then as I try to login, game's tells me I need to "Purchase/redeem code"

What a bunch of amateurs... can't even handle basic functions like login for users...

At least it appears "they know about it" and "are working hard to fix it"... basic google search show that they had the same issues years ago with steam too... wow.

yeah if your that easily upset over a free game i don't think Elite is for you.

I’ve just set up an Epic install of Elite for a family member, selected “default context” from the options menu and everything was mapped to the gamepad that needs to be. There are still a few spare bind slots for things if you want (I’ve added LB+RB for night vision, for example), if you don’t want to use the right-hand panel in game.

Welcome to the forum/community.

Don't let the negative things put you off, it will get fixed.

Also, don't let the replies you get from the Community affect you, we all love this game, that's why we're here, but many of us, myself included, have difficulty communicating to others without seeming rude or offensive.

Also, don't be afraid to ask for help, we love to help.

Thanks for the reply,

I'll try to keep that in mind. But do understand my frustration, I just wanted to try this game out as it seems interesting ... albeit I fear the learning curve I read about a little...

But I am stuck with two options regarding my situation and it gets me really confused ... am I suposed to do nothing or create a ticket?? (see attached images).

I hate to say this, but that situation seems like its very poorly handled by the devs...

Edit: Added an image for the error I get and corrected some spelling errors.

The support site banner is pretty clear that they are aware and working on it (though in fairness they often display out of date info, because ... fdev).

So I guess you get to wait, which sucks.

(In general the sign-up process is horrible, I was surprised they put it on Epic when they have so many issues already on Steam. Once you can get past the sign-up process and keybinds it is a fun game.).

IIRC I got past the purchase/redeem thingy by closing and restarting the Epic client. Might have even been a Windows Defender window hidden behind that telling it had blocked EliteDangerous64.exe from accessing the internet - told it of course to allow that connection.

Thanks for your reply as well,

That's what I figured... but then what if waiting won't fix it and creating a ticket is the actual way out?

Yet more of my time wasted! haha (ETA for an answer on a new ticket, site said it was 7 days yo!).

Anyways, what boggles the mind is that, after all those years, they are still having problems with that process???

How in heaven's hell did they not fix that in the years they had between Steam launch and Epic launch!?

I appreciate your pointing out that possibility, but I doubt its that.

The client should then tell me that the servers are simply... inacessible at the time.

Might be worth looking at this post as well, though it's mostly about people with multiple accts. Does seem like the Epic launcher is a bit more touchy than other options.

And ofc the login servers may be down again <sigh>

I am trying really hard to give this game a chance, but it seems everything is against us lmao

I haven't tested it myself lately (or the new in-game introduction), but he did say that jump (hyperspace) wasn't mapped. A feature that was presented to him in the introduction, but not mapped to his xbox gamepad.
Last time I had a look at gamepad defaults, it didn't even include galaxy map traversing...

That’s odd, they’re all there for me. “Y” to hyperspace, “Y”+DPad for SuperCruise. Galaxy map stuff on the thumbsticks & triggers.

Perhaps it’d be worth applying a different pre-set choice and re-selecting default context?
