Open Play - Ship Balance

Why isn't anyone ever complaining about the ability for some ships to carry more when the ship I prefer can't carry the same amount. I should be forced to purchase a larger ship then I prefer to utilize; Right. Come on, who's with me on this. Free Conda's for everyone or no Conda's at all. LOL

There is always a trade-off. Some ships have more jump range, more shields, more maneuverable, ability land on medium pads etc.

In PvP encounters, Fer-de-Lance is just superior to any other combat ship, even more to non-combat ship. The gap is tremendously large and this is not good.

Which means, the balance in open is so that there is either no risk for the attacker, or no risk for the attacked

No disagreement there, no balance just flying around unengineered in open in ED, no one ever claimed there was, or should be,

balanced fights are "arranged" between players in specific locations in comparable ships.

(I loved blockade running pre-engineering at CGs. Today its boring, because it's risk free in the correct build).

How often you see actual blockades in ED ? I've been hanging out in Mandh for the last few days, double CG target for the Empire, should ideal for a good blockade but no sign of anything like it....

The main imbalance is the sheer amount of shields these things can carry thanks to booster-stacking (and what are the odds - the mamba and FDL are the only mediums with six utility slots!).

That said, maybe it's an engineering thing? Here's what happened when a (presumably unengineered) krait faced off against my (HD prismatic with 1 HD booster) type-7. Even without taking the actual weapon fire into account, that initial bump didn't even visibly dim my shields but it had a pretty clear effect on his.

Think you misquoted me there and meant to quote someone else :)

What if attacker accidently brings FSD-Disruptor rockets? Oh no, you cant high-wake anymore, die!
Before I fitted a heat sink to my T7, I took a grom, cooked my ship trying to get away because lol type-7 FSD thermal load, suffered three consecutive FSD malfunctions and still managed to highwake. My hull was in single digits and my modules were trashed, but I got away. This was otherwise your typical rail/plasma FDL gankboat.

I refitted my ship, came back, and later encountered the same CMDR. They didn't even get through my first ring that time.

I survived a whole ganker wing in my 950 mj Krait Phantom explorer during Distant Worlds 2 just fine.

Another time I made a Chieftain who interdicted my Keelback run away from me while he and his wingmate meta FdL tried to gank me.

Some ships aren't viable for open, but most can be build to be survivable quite well.

not anymore, but it was quite common in the early CGs IIRC.

My T9 (which I don't normally ever use in busy systems in Open, much less so a CG) doesn't even have a shield, but has some hull and reinforced modules. It won't withstand a determined ganker, but relying on shields is dangerous in such a slow ship due to reverb torps being a thing.

I usually do trade CGs in a Cutter, the safest ship in the game. Even though it feels wrong to use such a classy vessel for carrying goods only. Ho hum.

I ran a shieldless T9 in the CSN CG, never again, even the NPCs added up. I do have HRP & MRP, Hull is 2,200 Shileds were 400, now 800. Just to save money on the NPCs and I go via the Nav Beacon with an SLF usually for the bounties so the shields do fine for that. Was a bit surprised at the 35% hit though, although I hate to lose jump range so I may just have to suffer it . Or get rid of the ADC or SCA or even the DSS. I hate Outfitting and would rather have a versatile fun ship. When I cant get away Ill have to update it....or buy another and Outfit that for CGs more likely rather than swop modules about :)

Cutter, I unlocked few weeks ago still aint bought one, same as you it just doesnt feel right doing trade in it rather than the Cargo Ships...for now anyway. Im doing 512 in the T9 and think I could get 600+ in the Cutter with potentially better gank-proof as well? Which is annoying....

At the moment I have flexibility and choice, to make 'bad' decisions as well as good and live or die with the risks and the consequences as long as Im having fun. I am being pushed towards the Cutter though with Reverbs doing that sort of damage it kind of defeats the point of the T9 for me except PVE Combat, but not at CGs. Ill keep going for now though, see what happens.

Saw a couple of them doing cargo runs for the CG over the week-end, they were teamed up with a medium fighter escort though...

That one was probably a heavily engineered combat pilot, simply a matter of good tactics :)

Its not that much superior as you might think it is, but I guess its still too early for you to see that. Lemme guess, you got recent free copy of ED, went to first CG and because you saw more FDL's than other ships, and got ganked by them? So you came to forums, and start demand to nerf FDL because of it? Its like asking why your newb level 1 char cant beat other level 99 end-game char in any mmo.

And FDL is really poor at anything other than a combat. So why FDL should be weak at it? Its end-game PVP ship once at full G5, whenever you like it or not.

FAS, Cheftain, Kraits, Mamba with certain bulids can be equal or sometimes better than a FDL. Its all down to what bulids are used and by how well are being used.

So pls gitgud, dont be so discouraged, go enginneer your ship, and instead of whining about how unfair PVP is, better is to actually learn and adapt. Tons of "gankers" will probly accept friend request if you send them after being killed once or twice by them, not all, but some of them will do.

Hello!

Dear Frontier Development Team, please take a look at current state of open play PvP encounters.

Regular (non-meta) ships are unable to do any considerable damage to min-maxed meta ships, or survive long enough to escape.

That kills any joy of playing in Open Play. If you got interdicted by Fer-de-Lance or Mamba, you are dead, because they got massive amount of shields, superior firepower and speed. Those ships are able to kill any ship except another meta Fer-de-Lance or Mamba in less than 10 seconds.

Please, do something about that.
What? Less than 10 seconds? My Cutter does not know about such "fact".

No mate, i've been playing since June, and did some research, because I'm interested in PvP. Current state of ship balance can be improved.
All ships you mentioned doesn't stand a chance versus competent FDL pilot.

Still an A rated Cutter might still have to run from from fully engineered FDL, or not ?

Don't know where the 'balance' is exactly ?

But either way - if you can't kill him, he can probably kill you and then.... you run, that is the way combat in ED goes 😀

Mine is quite heavily engineered, mostly g5.

And yes I wouldn't bother to try shooting FDL, better just leave, eventually FDL quite likely wins. Mostly because it could manouvre so much faster than I can, so my time on target would be lousy...

Could be the FCs ? No real need to jump into the system anymore, just park there shuttle the goods to port ?
no, it stopped directly with engineering.
also the rise of large private groups added to it.
it's really "early time" remembrances.

here is an exampel from 2015: Source: https://www.reddit.com/r/EliteDangerous/comments/3dreyl/warning_eleu_system_under_blockade/

good roleplaying. CG was about curing an outbreak, they performed a merc group tasks with blockading the spread of infection.
got me into shipbuilds back then - a very special cobra build could just make it against their clippers blockaderunning.
good days for me.

now, i'm trying to envision the same today. as it was a rares CG with 10t cargo max, i'd build a lightweight imperial courier and put dirty drive + drive distriubutor enhanced performance thrusters on it. that would put me beyond 800 m/s boost speed and over 600 m/s straightline.
i might fit a docking computer and a 2d shield.
no blockading player would even inderdict me - because, as said: either i sit in a ship which can't survive or i sit in a ship which they can't get. boring.

This is just an FDL all fixed multicannons fully G5 overcharged, autoloader on all mediums, corrosive on the huge. 154 dps.

If you were running anything less than 1k shields, 1k hull you would have just a few seconds - max.

This is not meta. This is just an example of the asymmetry in the game.

If you are comfortable with the asymmetry (I am), then this is more about C&P, security states, and pve pvp partitioning.
