Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

Since CIG have spun off a new studio via Turbulent to work on planets, it seems some backers might now have the idea that spinning off studios to work on different parts of the game might be the way to go

I mean, the more that is outsourced to other studios maybe things will get better. As long as CIG communicate well with those studios, things like scale, so their isn't another illfonic.

What won't change is the amount of work required as long as the requirements remain the same.

The OP says this:

I would be surprised if they managed to modernize 4 ships per year, at this rate it will take more than 10 years.

Well, it does depend a lot on how its managed and how many people they have working on it. But let's say they are right about how long. The only way to speed it up is to have more people on the job. Let's say they double the amount of people (usual caveat - mythical man month, etc), then that's still 5 years. How about 5x the number of staff? Great! 1 year!

Now you've done this, either as a separate studio or keeping it internal, now you have a load of employees you no longer need. Now what? Ok, you could outsource fully, so its not your problem, or contract, but that increases the hourly rate per employee. So increasing staff and rates, makes it all a lot more expensive.

Looking at what they are doing with Turbulent, you have to presume they have long term plans for this. You generally are not going to set up a new studio for just one year or two. CIG know the 110/100/90.... systems are going to take years to develop yet.

I don't think stock is the problem. I can find compontents. Its the money. Graphics card i don't need, but do need a new board, cpu, memory.
You should at least get a SSD. CDPR have added a 'SSD recommended' in the minimum requirement and SSD is marked mandatory if you want to play it better than minimum.
I suspect the game needing a quick swap file like SC.

I have a SSD with some games on it, but i'll also get a SSD for the system volume as well.

GPUs are the major stock-limitation currently, however Ryzen CPUs are getting short on supplies too due to demand. RAM is very cheap now which is good.

Get a superfast Gen4 NVMe SSD, and switch that with your current (SATA?) SSD. I.e. run your fave games off the NVMe, and run windows & rest from SATA.

Cheap RAM is good. For CPU, i don't need the latest and greatest. Just something fairly modern. My current processor was first released 10 years ago and IIRC my revision was produced 8 years ago... like, erm... when SC kickstarted!

As for SSD, yeah, that's the plan. I need a bigger games drive anyway and my current SSD is a good size for the system drive.

Don't ever go confusing something that CDPR recommends for CP 2077 with what the spaghetti code clusterfarce of SC requires. SC runs like a pig on NASA level computers where as CP2077 will run acceptably on minimum spec last gen hardware. CDPR just didn't 'add' or casually tack-on a suggestion for an SSD...the optional recommendation has been there since they first released the PC specifications 3 months ago...and in case you haven't noticed...CP 2077 is being simultaneously released on last gen consoles which don't have SSD's.

I realise that the word released can't be fully understood by the Star Citizen illiterati...since it's only ever used in a context where a game developer fulfils their promises to the many thousands of fans who support them ;)

You seem to be continually falling into the typical SC fanboi traps these days...I've no idea where you gather information about Star Citizen...but it seriously needs ignoring or setting fire to. Sometimes you post stuff that frankly beggars belief...(and I'm saying this from the context of being a long term backer and supporter of Star Citizen)... ...

As an aside, CP 2077 is now available for pre-load. 59Gb...downloading it now :)

Yeah, i'll be building my computer to run decently modern games. I'm not going to even attempt to build a computer that might occasionally run SC decently during a free fly with the vague hope that i'd have to upgrade the computer yet again at some unspecified point in the future to run a later iteration of SC.

As for CP2077 - 2 more days to go before I can preload.

It's always a mistake to build a system around one particular game...in the case of Star Citizen, it's an absolute folly.

Why 2 days until you can preload CP2077? It's available now on GOG or tomorrow on Steam/Epic...

I don't envy the Cyberpunk dev & support team this week - simultaneous worldwide launch across 9 gaming platforms

I suspect they're physically crapping themselves already :D They're going to be busy, that's fer sure... I'm kinda expecting another record in sales if I'm honest...RDR2 made the current record with $880m in sales in the first weekend of release and that was purely console sales. I somehow think CP2077 will break that.

Steam says 9th of December for me. Maybe i'm pleb tier?

Anyway, in other news, a fine trolling here

But most of the respondees seem to think its real (and i hope it isn't!) and are slapping each other on the backs over how much they have all spent.

SC has a really strange community. Has anyone noticed that?

Reading between the lines here...I suspect that his ex wife's boyfriend isn't a Star Citizen backer...and from his apparent love for Star Citizen and celebrating the joys of concierge might be why she's his ex wife :D

At least I had the sense to buy my wife off with a new Land Rover Discovery 3 first...

Same here. Had to remove SW:Squsdrons from my SSD to make room for it, but I bought it for the VR experience anyways. I had my fun, well worth the the money I paid despite the short single player campaign, but I needed the space.

I suppose I really should get around to installing this new SSD I bought in preparation for MSFS, but I don’t have the time to invest in that game right now. Got another at the same time (they were both on clearance for half off) that I’ve labeled “Don’t install until Star Citizen is Playable.” I figure that at the rate I filled up my last SSD, I’ll probably get a new computer for true next-gen VR before I’m tempted to install it. ;)

Yes, I have also noticed that I need to be more careful about what I post lately. Lack of verification on my part and little really interesting information. I will be more careful.

It's not that I don't enjoy your posts...I do...since it's refreshing to see another's perspective as a player and supporter of SC...but sometimes, you seem to be requoting 'facts' that are dubiously innacurate which is a trait common amongst dyed in the wool SC supporters who refuse to accept Ci¬G along with their many faults and untruths.

I'm still a supporter...but perhaps more of a cynical realist than you are. :)

I dunno, I read this and think it's over the top to be real.
