Suggestion for Odyssey

Make the place under the docking bay of the station a bar where all the pilots get together for DRINKS. And we can all meet up and chat when we’re not out flying in space. Different kind of bar in every station. Hire some writers, you need some story and background to the characters too. Monetise it with large quantity of varied clothing, jewellery, ship paint jobs and decals, all cheap with some more expensive and some really quite expensive, encouraging frequent and often microtransactions but also with heavily discounted “buy a ton of Arx” options to encourage people to get instantly rich and spend spend spend. Monetise, to pay for everything else, but NEVER PAY TO WIN. <Mods sorry pls move to suggestion board cannot find it.>

So just out of curiosity, what exactly IS this community’s obsession with virtual bars?

It’s something I see pop up from time to time on this forum about a game about flying spaceships. And I’m genuinely curious as to where it comes from..

It comes from the idea of creating a living, breathing galaxy simulator. That's Braben's ultimate vision, this was always meant to be a lot more than a game about flying spaceships.

"I'd buy that for a dollar!"

In Second Life, I used to hang out in Bladerunner City1 back in the early noughties... Loads of people from all around the world came to ogle at the gorgeous scenery, soak up the atmosphere, check out some virtual art exhibitions, sometimes even purchase a few prints or just chill out and listen to Vangellis in the background to the sound of rain pattering on the sidewalk... I just used to pick a spot with a view and leave it there in the background while I worked and occasionally took a break to talk to the "locals" it was a lot of fun; A peaceful oasis where I met some interesting folks from all walks of life who had an interest in Bladerunner.

The idea of the virtual bar is something that I imagined all they way back in 1984 playing the original Elite... Needed a lot of imagination to bring that vectored masterpiece to life since there was nothing in game other than some ingeniously generated flavour text about tree grubs, occasional storms and of course, beer.

There was a video of an Elite Ship Scale comparison where the ships flew, one by one, from smallest to largest out of a coriolis station's letterbox... The view was from somewhere located in the mouth itself, off to one side... I always thought that would be an epic place to stand, or sit, and watch the comings and goings of commanders and NPCs... especially somewhere busy like Shinrarta.

Oh ok. I’m guessing this is from the Kickstarter then? I wasn’t around for that, so I wouldn’t know anything about it.

It’s interesting how the bar thing keeps coming up, though. I mean features of a “living, breathing, universe” could be damn near anything. If it’s the more social aspect of living everyone is going for, why not talk about creating a sports league (maybe centered around Buckyball racing), or an in-universe card/board game (like Gwent in Witcher 3)? It might even give some context to this bar some people are clamoring for 😊

Alright, so something like this makes sense to me. Thanks for sharing 😊

Would I have to touch the sports ball?.... I don't like the putty bally in holey game
No touching required. Only (virtual) drinking while (virtual) talking about the holey game of...basketball? Billiards? Skee ball? Let’s go with Soccer.

Behold the kickmen!

Imagine being able to watch CQC league tables ingame and queue up for CQC while sinking a few virtual beers...
"Here I go lads, wish me luck!"

CQC could be telepresense with booths in each bar... When your name is called, you head to the booth and log in...

Alright, so it’s basically a more immersive version of a lobby system/chat room? I can see why people might be into that.

With the on-foot features coming in Odyssey you could probably abstract something similar at a station interior everyone decides on. Sort of similar to how everyone decided San Tu is the PvP system

It probably comes from varied sci-fi tropes from the Cantina in Star Wars to the Battlestar Galactica rec room to the bar in DS9, the expanse etc..it also features prominently in sci-fi novels and comics.

Generally it was where pilots hung out, gambled, drank and where the shadier business deals we done...it's not a new concept.
