Looking forward to intense fighting in FPS Odyssey

Something I noticed in the dev diary the AI seems to be quite 'immobile'.

From the limited clips we saw the AI (I'm assuming it is AI although it's possible it's other players) just stands in the open getting shot. I didn't see the AI take cover or try to avoid incoming fire. I'm hoping it's just set up to demonstrate the weapons rather than the AI.

I know the AI in ED can be made to be very dangerous but was toned down to cater for the average player. It's logical that the soldier AI could be the same though that does require slightly different parameters like pathing and recognising what is and isn't cover etc...

On another note, something the dev said was Odyssey and ground combat could be where small ships will shine...it does seem like they will be preferable for surface combat and I'm looking forward to their new role. All dumbfire missile builds, frags, PAs...should be interesting.
Gareth Hughes in the interview with Arthur during the livestream said the AI had to be dialled back as it was too good at jumping out of the way of SRVs, so the AI should be pretty mobile :)

I noticed this too. It could be they were the equivalent of Harmless.

This is one of the first things I'll be looking for in Alpha. I'm guessing we'll have a rank for shooting (hope so anyway) so we'll all start off at the lowest rank. I'll be pushing that ASAP.

He said that but that was specifically about srv vs infantry. It wasn't a question related to general Al.

It looked very pedestrian across the board so I'm hoping that is just the ranks in play, which I'd be happy with. The very lowest rank ai is fine if it's dumb.

I want my SRV to have something like this (but on both sides) please...

I love FPS games....Bring this to ED will be a win win for me too BUT some players dont like it at all.

Hope there´s more things to do while off combat...Exploration, prospecting, salvageable missions or mats to collect and so on.

I also love FPS games, with a proviso they be "good" FPS games. There is an endless variety of mediocre FPS games, and since FDEV have never made a FPS game before, let alone a top rated one, I fear it will turn out to be just another mediocre FPS. Mind you I won't be doing the FPS bit, as I said if I ever want to get back into FPS seriously it would be with a dedicated FPS game.

Seriously.

Yes... I love the flight sim and the galaxy model. I STILL enjoy mining, and fighting with ships, space trucking and exploring... love it all.

BUT....

I also play Fallout 4 A LOT... with mods that make fighting very intense.. WOTC for instance on hardest levels.
I also play Call of Duty.

So for me... adding FPS is a win win. When the reveal came out... the fighting was more intense than expected... for ME that was a plus

All this being said... anyone else looking forward to it for real?
Hell yea! Two gameplay types I love in a game I love? Yes, please!

I think some here are a little hung up n the 'Shooter' part of it, it's ED, Combat will be but a part of what is done on foot..
It's really the only aspect of Odyssey that FD have chosen to show us. There was a small clip of a player using the plasma cutter but apart from that it's been all about combat.

When FD decide to show us some other aspects of Odyssey then we'll have something else to discuss.

FD are clearly trying to attract a new kind of player from the CoD, Battlefield, Battle Royale and other FPS genres and obviously combat is going to be the big draw...hence all the attention combat is getting. I don't think showing a single commander salvaging scrap from a crash site, or harvesting biological samples would really entice the FPS crowd to get involved.

My biggest concern about EDO is the netcode. Given the issues we already experience with instancing, Orange Sidewinders, other colour ships etc, can you imagine trying to engage in close quarters combat in a confined space unless the netcode/server provision has been upgraded to cope?

No, me neither.

It usually is, going back over the released game footage and comments it was revealed to me that the first video featured exploration "One Giant Leap", the second, well I'm not really sure but something about forging as in "Forging your Path", and the third combat as in, "Sphere of Combat". So I had to go back and watch the first video just to make sure I didn't miss something important.

I didn't, just over 4 minutes of them talking about how good the new planets looked, a few seconds where they mentioned "sampling gun" and new plants and that was it. The rest, as far as I could see, was just generic background stuff, a very poor effort indeed if they were trying to feature "exploration".

huh? We've had 3 Dev Diaries, the first 2 IIRC were conbat-free zones. (Admittedly the 4th is likely combat as well).

The only thing you'll be fighting is a framerate. P2P, the "seamless" joys await!

I never did like FPS. I was there when Doom and Quake first arrived in the late 80's and early 90's. Running through halls shooting everything in sight.

It has not changed. The halls now show the world, the guns got more fancy and the characters are still you shooting everything in sight.

Except for the high score, I don't see the allure. But this is a generational thing. Those born just prior to the release of Doom and Quake, you grew up on it.

I'll forgo the FPS side of Odyssey.

Not sure we're talking about the same thing...I've only seen two video/trailers for Odyssey, both mainly featured combat. If they've shown more footage of other aspects of Odyssey then I'd love to see it...perhaps you could link them?
