First time in VR. Holy Mary, Mother of God.

That does not fill me with confidence about my computer's ability to stream video to the Quest 2

You always have the option to reduce the video settings. Until my 3090 arrives I am using a reduced field of view.

Edit: actually I just watched a comparative video review where the reviewer said that the G2 didn't have as much ability to alter various settings as the 8KX, so best ignore me!

Maybe not; The G2 FOV is already smaller than your P8kX in "small" mode, and as such never gets to the far bits, where everything becomes so very, very stretched out, and performance wasteful (Give us support for canted screens plz, Frontier :7). :7

...also, at least just from the gross specs, ignoring other factors, which may or may not make things worse, the Quest2 is not that far behind 2160p. :7

I went and picked up my Quest 2 yesterday and am thrilled at the game performance. It ran very smoothly at Ultra settings. I was somewhat surprised to find that performance on my system was better than on my son's pc, which has better overall specs than mine. He has a Ryzen 5 3400x w/ 1650 SUPER vs. my 2600x w/ RX 590. The only place my computer exceeds his is RAM, where I have 32 to his 16, but I wouldn't expect that to matter much for this situation. His game starts out smoothly but degrades to choppiness and lag over time. If I get some time later today, I'll deep-dive into the processes he's got running to ensure he doesn't have some stupid (or malicious) going on. He's 15, so that machine contains every music player, chat client, game company launcher, etc that you've ever heard of. He's smart enough to turn that stuff off before he plays, but maybe he's missing something.

you mean this one? https://forums.frontier.co.uk/threads/first-time-in-vr-holy-mary-mother-of-god.561954/post-8875118

...doesn't help much, from what I understand you there you're saying get the valve index - which is a) expensive and b) not available, and everything else is either crap or made by oculus...

The new HP is supposed to be cool, though it is shipping only to pre-orders customers at this time, I think. Full release is imminent, though. But it's twice the price of a Quest 2.

Like you, I have historically prided myself on never having a single social media account of any kind. It's the worst thing to happen to humanity in history, if you ask me. I have 4 kids aged 15 to 28, and the amount of drama and misery social media has brought into my home over the last 15 years is beyond belief. Further, I'm a software engineer who has built web applications since the 90's -- after being online all day for work, the LAST thing I want to do in the evening is browse the wall of somebody who I once distantly knew in high school to see what they're up to today. I absolutely couldn't care less, nor am I in the least bit inclined to share with the world my daily activities and photos of myself from dive bars and vacations.

That having been said, I broke down and created a Facebook account to register my Quest. I VERY strongly considered using my wife's account, but was worried she'd somehow share something and I didn't want to mess up her settings or anything. I can say that account creation is completely painless. Takes only a few minutes, and you're not required to share much info at all. I gave them a junk email account but did use my real phone number (which I guard like Fort Knox), so that I could pass the 2FA. I set absolutely EVERYTHING to "private and never to be shared" and I am not discoverable. No photos, no favorites, no details, no notifications and definitely no friends. I am the Keyser Söze of Facebook.

It was worth it. Spend 5 minutes in the cockpit in VR and I'm positive you'll agree.

The RX 590 is an 8GB card with overall slightly superior performances compared to a 6GB GTX 1060, which still has quite a bit superior performance compared to a newer 4GB 1650 Super. Newer doesn't automatically mean better, your RX 590 is surely a better fit for VR applications, the CPU becomes almost marginal given the difference in graphic performance.

Hmm. I thought those cards were pretty comparable, with the 1650S having a slight edge.

What do you think is the determining factor that's leading to better performance on my system, the extra 4gb of on-board RAM on the 590?

Degrading performance over time might point to that indeed. I saw the same with my girlfriend playing Half Life Alyx on her GTX 1060 3GB, slightly below the minimum 4GB requirements, as in starting mostly smooth and getting ever more choppy after about half an hour of playing.
