Your Neil Armstrong moment is a fade to black teleport outside... surely not?

Dear FDev,

I was excited to hear about the Neil Armstrong moment(s) you wanted to add to the game by being the first to set foot on a planetary surface. I was more disappointed however to learn that this will be a fade to black transition.

This will not only feel terrible and ruin that moment, but it will look monumentally stupid in game.

Imagine seeing someone enter or disembark from their ship and just seeing them magically plonk next to it outside. The same goes for hopping in and out of an SRV, players will go from standing outside of it to being transported inside of it and it will look rubbish.

I had fully intended to use Odyssey with multi-crew but the thought of looking around a cockpit to see players magically appear and disappear in their seats is just daft.

Is there no way of introducing some subtle transitions like when you exit your ship an animation kicks in where you fully stand up from your seat and walk to the door that is in every cockpit THEN fade to black? Then an animation kicks in of walking out of your ship or climbing down the ladder?

Climbing in and out of an SRV on a planet surface must surely be a continuous transaction? Surely? There is a God isn't there?

Ah yes, canned animations for routine actions. That never grows old! Man, imagine the joy of a 'subtle animation' when you have literally seen it for thousands of times!

While we are at it: can we extend the hyperjump animation? I just can't get enough of it!

I donno, I'm torn. Fade to black is corny. But I'd prefer that over some half attempt to over compensate with animations and whatnot.

I'm on the side of... ehhhhh meh. We all wanted that Neil Armstrong moment, that epic milestone in ED where you GET OUT of your seat, walk along a walkway, push a button, a ramp opens, and a door behind a puff of pressure expulsion presents the next chapter in our ED journey. You walk down the steps, and take your first ever epic slow look around, your ship looming over head as you realise its scale, and that you... really are insignificant against the vastness of space...

Standing on the ground, after pushing a button and fade to black sort of... epically changes that.. But it is what it is. One day that Armstrong moment will come, but, sadly the moment of everything new coming together for that first spectacle will not.

Better to have than not to have though, so still looking fwd to it having legs in one fashion or another.

But it would make sense to put these animations in Elite. They are everywhere already. :p

Want to immediately take off from the landing pad again? Better do the ol' down-turn-up routine.
Want to check the station's outfitting options? Better go down and all the way back in the hangar.
Want to take a look at hardpoints? Better watch the special extended director's cut of them deploying again.

In comparison a get in/out animation sounds rather sensible. 😜

These transitions only work well if they're believable and short - say entering a vehicle in GTA (even though entering a plane in it already takes longer than my patience allows, when it comes to the bigger ones). Given the size of the ships in Elite, and even the SRV, to get this done in a couple of seconds seems weird and unrealistic, so it'd have to take longer, which makes it tedious the 5th time you do it.

It also never really bothered my sense of immersion of Elite when switching between ships, or to the SLF/SRV. So in essence then, glad not to be you, OP;)

Dear Game Designers: What kind of a Neil Armstrong moment is a fade to black teleport out of my SRV to standing on the ground?

Fade to black worked for ship to SRV because 1) there was no space legs, and 2) nobody else saw the transition.

Fade to black is an utter failure in Odyssey.... Imagine how that is going to look in game!

- You'll see players magically spawn outside their ships, and magically disappear into them.

- You'll see players magically spawn outside of their SRVs when they get out of them. Then stand next to them to magically enter them.

- Inside the cockpit (if you multicrew) you'll see players magically spawn in and out of their seats.

This is a total let down.

I would suggest maybe transition into short animations? Getting up and walking to cockpit door? Then fade to black and then cut an animation walking / climbing down ship ladders?

Exciting SRV's should definitely have animation in and out of it?

So my post on page one was a joke but do you actually think we'll just fade out from black and be on the ground?

The answer was talking about the transition from and to the cockpit but was ambiguous about whatever happens after that.

Chances are, we'll appear at the top of a ramp or stairs. This will still give us the opportunity for the Neil Armstrong moment. I'm sure we won't "beam up" from the ground either, as you're implying. I'm guessing we'll need to walk up the stairs/climb a ladder and walk right up to the airlock before we "transition" to black screen then back to the seat.

I doubt anyone cared much about Neil Armstrong moving from his seat to the door...

Edit: I copy pasta my reply in the other thread. It's lazy but necessary. Unlike this thread.

Ideally, my CMDR could just get up from his chair at any time and the walk, skip, jump, or thruster pack anywhere--including out a hatch, open window, or gaping hole--seamlessly.

However, I'd also settle for a canned animation reminiscent of this:

If only he remembered the Rhino had a door... LOL :ROFLMAO::LOL:

Even that began to bother me, because the very limited amout of storage space the game makes you switch between storage ships. and every...single...time you have to wait for the docking pad to turn and move the ship into position. From my perspective it adds only a tiny bit of immersion, while essentially wasting the player's time.

Do you want a list of features in Elite that already do that? :D

Not arguing. Just think the game loves stuff like that. I was pleasantly surprised when we found out they're adding magic elevators to take us to and from docking to the hubs.

And I think it is fine up to a certain point, because the game is more on the simulation side of games. However, if nonsense piles up (like explained above), it might contradict the original intent.

Is this really THAT big of a deal? I mean what do you want, a 5 minute sequence where you have to put a space suit on, do checklists, then slowly make your way down the lift and like a big dramatic panning shot of you taking that "first step" onto another world?

You're being really dramatic about this but aren't even offering your suggestion for how they should handle this.

It never bothered you because you never saw the mechanic happen via other players.

When you literally see other players magically transport in to SRVs and into their ships after you've had some cool FPS gameplay... the vibe will be uber cheap haha
You can already observe it in places like Dav's Hope - plop, an Anaconda appears out of nowhere - plop, an SRV vanishes into thin air. Thanks to relogging. I'm used to it now, and what you describe already happens in other MP games, including those with dedicated servers.

As for PvP FPS action, I remain sceptical about this being much of a thing outside focused player hotspots. I already barely run into other CMDRs (playing in Open all the time) let alone at random planetary settlement/base #5345359. I reckon we'll be fighting NPCs first and foremost so this won't really be much of an issue from that point of view.
