Elite: Dangerous – Nostalgia

I remembered this video I first saw early on in 2015 of a time-lapse of Bixby Station and it sent me back to how amazing this game seemed with nearly limitless potential of adventure and game-world exploration. I had spent some time searching for this station, as it was supposed to have a lot of useful modules available (and it's also how I found this video of it on YouTube), but it was from an early time during testing before the game released, so not in the game any more.

In retrospect, I still enjoy the game, but I'm a bit more calloused and jaded now with my expectations and sense of adventure.

Do any of you have these same sort of nostalgic memories of the early game?

Cheers.

Beagle Point during DWE 3302 - Looking back on the Milky Way AS a galaxy and thinking, No light from Sol that has reached this place has anything to do with recorded history.

As to videos, there was one that inspired me, but I haven't been able to find it. It had the classic side on flyby as performed in Elite, and I want to say it was what led me to DWE 3302.

I'm nostalgic for the unforgiving early game, I have fond memories of landing too heavily and the overtly brutal collision detection taking 90% of my hull away. The other is going bankrupt and having to do...questionable things. Also Lugh, and the in game puzzles- I loved the point where people worked out the probe scans were wireframes of their own ships :D

Isinona inspired me to go full FAoff, which totally transformed the game for me.
I tried it myself but with an Xbox pad it's too much effort - though I do fly FA Off now and then if it feels beneficial to what I'm doing. I also tried following his 'no rebuy' approach but found that pretty tiresome very fast, but it's a nice idea on paper at least.

What they did inspire me with most is the minimalism - fly a ship, do basic tasks, and still manage to make an engaging story out of it (my favourite is episode "Tocci" - lol'd when I encountered an NPC with the same name later on).

First month of the game was utter joy, since there had been a dearth of spaceship flying games, and this one looked absolutely amazing. My first time landing was memorable.

First six months of the game was fantastic, slowly working my way up through the ranks to improve my ship (or if I'd been saving) actually BUYING a new ship. That used to be a very big deal, but didn't last.

Since then, it scratches the need to fly a spaceship, and I did all the engineering and other stuff over the years, but today it's mostly just an occasional hop in, pay my carrier dues, do a few things, and go play something else. I'm curious to see what Odyssey brings, mostly because I want to be excited about this game again.

Thanks for the replies.

Of course I have to also mention being a rare cargo rum runner in a zippy Cobra Mk III in 2015 (3301) as well – only the best Commander pirates had a chance of catching me in that ship, and only one ever did, but more than once. Sure, you can still trade rares in a Cobra these days, but the game has moved on since then, and the Cobra isn't what once was, comparatively. It didn't quite make the cut for the then new small ship thrusters that came with the Engineers.

I still have that Red Ignition paint job and several others hanging around for it at least.

Watching Kamzel's video series from gamma or early release where he crossed the galaxy and discovered Beagle Point, that's what got me hooked on Elite Dangerous, I bought the game myself not long after. I often feel nostalgic for those early days when we didn't know anything about the game or what was out there in the galaxy. Now we know differently !

I do remember that one too!

For me, the nostalgia factor looks like this:

I never did play the early games. They don't seem like they were as popular here in the States. Been meaning to get a hold on an Elite NES cart for a while now though. Kind of a shame, as I probably would have liked it quite a lot back in the day.

I didn't quite mean nostalgia in the fondness of retro things sense, but sort of the "can't go home again" sense for this game... if that makes sense. 🤷‍♂️

But it's all good. Cheers.

I enjoyed your video - the early E D interface certainly looked a bit different to today!
