Hold me, tell me everything's going to be ok.

If you can't refuel: call the Fuel Rats. They'll fill you up and give you a free lecture about route planning, refuelling and fuel scoops
Or, of course, you could place a call to Privateers Independent Trading Associates (Tag: PITA) and one of the Vermin will gladly relieve you of any cargo (to save weight) and ensure that you arrive at a 'safe' station virtually immediately... Naturally there is a fee for this service, often referred to, obscurely, as 'rebuy' - but is a nominal sum that rarely inconveniences the average pilot.

Wow what a fantastic reception ☺️

This morning I accepted a "black box retrieval" mission, was mildly confused scanning and using the FSS, was a bit more confused until I realised I'd "filtered out" signal sources, then like the Anti-Bono, found what I was looking for.

Not sure if I needed to FSS though.

Regarding "not being able to screw up" - oh yes... Although with respect, it's more a state of mind then anything related to game play. My screw-ups were based on staring at a screen with a torrent of "red words" telling me I had insufficient something, and you can't engage that and continuing down this avenue of button clicking will result in grave consequences.

...I went from literally delivering a bag of tea next-door, to being threatend with Space Piracy in 20 minutes.

As first days on the job go, it was a classic.

But that's more down to me not reading things properly and just clicking expecting everything to sort itself out.

I've chilled right out now.

But anyway! wow, so kind - I will definitely take up those offers of friend requests.

If any of you need some tea delivering - I'm your man.

Xxx

Oooo...
Plenty of opportunities to make a total Dog's Dinner of the game in the early days - but at least most can be made in the starter Sidey and the loss is 'easier' than having a big rebuy as well as any other loss :)

Ideally having a few ship losses early will break the attachment to the asset and make the almost inevitble 'losses' as you progress further into play have less impact.
(I have lost more ships to the Environment than any other 'feature')

Sorry, excuse the bad manners... Welcome (y)

I don't think so! I just skimmed the whole thread predating my post and I see no stuphz being hadz or zumphed.

Really? Then I stand erected, and offer my humblest apologies old chap!!
I petition the OP for his stuph to be royally hazzed by Mr Bill. Do it now.

(Apologies Bill, I must have been thinking of another thread - I think there were 3 "stuph hazzers" yesterday and I missed out on all 3 :( )

See, this is an example of how ED doesn't really give you hints that you're missing something.

As a rule, it'll be the same procedure for any mission that involves going to another system to find/scan/recover/explode something - as well as for other things, such as hunting for engineering mat's.
Jump into the system, target the system's nav buoy, travel to it, drop out of supercruise, target the nav-buoy and wait until the scan is complete.
This will, basically, give you ALL the information about a system; planets, stations, surface bases, signal sources and Points Of Interest (POIs) related to missions.

So, if you're doing a black-box mission, for example, you head to the target system, scan the nav-buoy there, jump back into supercruise, look at your nav-HUD (the one on the left side of your ship) and scroll down it until you see something that says "Mission Related Signal Source".
Target that, fly to it, drop out of SC and scoop your black boxes.

Also, while I'm at it, be aware that although most of the time collecting black boxes is straightforward, sometimes you'll get attacked while you're doing it.
In that case, feel free to just grab one or two black boxes (or none) and jump back into SC.
Another mission related POI will appear and you'll have another chance to collect them.
Don't feel like you have to collect them all at the same time if you're being attacked.
