[GALNET] Warning of Ship Abductions by Fleet Carriers by nasty people

You're completely removing intent. The intent was clearly to deceive. You are placing zero responsibility on the FC guy to have any ethics.
Well, the deceived one might come across a situation in real life, and think "Hey, I know that one, I've heard it before in a video game I once played..." and jog on.
Glasses can be half full too, usually bad things have a positive side as well.

I think cool FDev waited for this scam, I love the Galnet article because probably inevitable there would have to be a disclaimer from FD about this, at some stage. People have been joking about stranding people since FC Beta.

Imagine if you had this pop up every time you docked on a carrier instead ..
"You do not own this vessel and are therefore docked at your own risk. Do you understand? Click Yes for No"
Imagine that every .. single .. time! Eep.

Blummin' slavers! Stay frosty Commanders. :D

Politics IS organized crime.

Taxes are just demanding money with menaces - cant remember who said it

I wish I had a FC so I could rescue those conned. But I just pootle along making cash the long way round. :)

Some FC owners already are apparently.

Why is nobody advising the noobs to just take the Krait and never dock again at that FC? And then come back 3 days later in the Sidey, these type of people probably dont keep accurate records.

I read an article about this from salon.com today (don't blame me, blame my newsfeed) where the writer managed to find a 7 year old player who got roped into this and then immediately dived into hyperbole about it being the "cyber equivalent of enticing children into vans with promises of puppies" - and all with no obvious signs of sarcasm.

Talk about "flying off the handle"!

Honestly, these "slavers" have my appreciation.
Anybody who's daft enough to get suckered and daft enough to not ask for help in-game, or on the forum, or on reddit, or on twitter, or on discord, deserves to spend the rest of their ED life mining VO's for somebody else.
And with no obvious signs of sarcasm you openly state you appreciate the white van owners for confidence tricking of minors,
appreciation for in-game grooming and targeting
Of minors?

We have laws and social ethics protecting children because they literally don’t have enough life experience to know they are being taken advantage of, or to know that this is not how the world normally operates.

A bit much I think. As far as I know, they laid a trap for the gullible, yes children fall into that category but I don’t believe these people were specifically targeting children. Some adults must have fallen for it, they didn’t go to online journo’s though to tell their tale, only the parents of the vulnerable children who were caught up in it seem to have done so. Children so vulnerable you have to wonder why parents let them into an MMO without tighter supervision.

I guess by that comment you don’t have your own kids (that you know off) the crazy absurdities that parents are willing to overlook just to be to *****ing sit down and have some *****peace and ****quiet before the Show culminating your life starring mountains of feces restarts the day afterwards, and that’s if you get sleep :)
Bitter-parenthood aside ;)

As you point out the adults feel like idiots and don’t complain, and the parents of the kids who give a partial care with what their kids are doing are the ones who have flagged it in the media, thus painting the story in such a manner.
Which by all accounts is the framing with which some will view this.

It’s not that I don’t agree with the sentiment that in-game lore supports slavery, or the game is supposed to be dog eat dog nastiness and we’ve all made mistakes. We learn that way.

But I have to play devils advocate because Of the manic “think of the children” spin and commanders have got to watch 6 with what they say at the moment with regards to the media framing what we say in the context of confidence tricking of kids.

I just say no to my children, who are the same age as the story. There is no way in hell I'd let them on the internet without supervision.

Yeah, me too; especially all the freaky “free to play” mobile&online communities - talk about your stranger-danger.
Thankfully it’s been a steady diet of Singleplayer or sofa-coops. My eldest has just started playing elite when there were cheap and free copies last autumn.
He still refuses to play on open - I don’t know whether I’ve succeeded or failed as a parent there :D

I do have kids and possibly some Idk about, when my kids were that age, I knew what they were doing in online games because I did it with them.

See? Y'all get your emergent gameplay and it gets minor coverage and folks start turning more eyes on Elite, and best of all, it all crops up in Galnet 'cause it's an ongoing story fitting for the game's crapsack universe.

It's win-win all the way around, really.

I've seen a screenshot of one of the supposed players claiming they had their FC taken away and were banned to solo only. Anyone know anything of this or is it false?
