Slave Carriers Update

That polygon article and other articles over "slavery".

You may chose to weather it and ignore it, or you may take steps against what happened.

I could've added "" to the phrase "PR disaster" because it's not necessarily really one.
But it can well be perceived as one by the managers.

Oh please no one takes what Polygon says remotely serious, Frontier should take a victory lap over them writing a typically miss-informed article that required two corrections.

All fun aside the discords sometimes get very heated and spicy, and that is phrased very benevolent. As does the ingame chat (Borann).
This is not ok and I agree FD has to take a stance here. Especially if there are screenshots going around from the discords to the press.

Apparently there was voice chat involved too, combine with racism, some poorly chosen ship and faction names, minors involved - it's easy to see how this escalated and someone at ED HQ had to do damage control...

Just parked at a random FC and will stay there for few days - maybe this will become a new trend :)

The simple "slaving" isn't enough though in my opinion.
In fairness, the CMDR in question, while initially annoyed, was grateful in the end I didn't destroy his ship (he limped away with 50% hull or so and a wrecked shield generator) - once I explained I was doing it 'for science' he even offered me some LTDs, unfortunately the party poopers system security showed up so I had to bail. Borann did indeed result in tons of emergent and fun gameplay alright - been a while since I experienced anything even remotely similarly enjoyable if I'm honest.

As for Discord & co, yes I can only imagine but for Frontier the line is (or at least should be) pretty clear - and that is sys/local chat (and of course the forum, forgot about that) and no further. Each platform is responsible to keep their own yard in order, just like Facepalm shouldn't interfere in Tw@er's business (though I consider them two sides of the same coin and wish they'd just disappear entirely).

And you're right, syschat continues to be a toxic cesspool I find rather unpleasant, almost to the extent of not bothering with CGs now (I know I can hide it, but sometimes useful info is being shared there) - if Frontier want to weed out that toxicity and its association with the game they could become more proactive in monitoring it rather than rely on the reporting function (and who knows, maybe they already are).

I would like to make a rather important point.

If Polygon have found this instance of alleged 'slaving' in game and racism on discord, they will sure as hell now be creating forum accounts in an attempt to find even more fodder for their second rate reporting, fine pieces of journalistic endeavours, what what
I'd stick with 'second rate reporting'
Sums up a good % of journalism

Why not ban for violence/harassment then? Reasoning with "Player misdirection" is flimsy as hell, and serves as bad precedent..

That's the point. at the moment everything is just rumors and hearsay and it will remain this way until FDev makes some official statement about the situation.

If there was some actual racism and other abusive/offensive stuff involved, I have zero issues with FDev throwing the book at the involved commanders for that. Just "abducting" newbies with a carrier shouldn't be a bannable offense though. It's a lesson learned for the newbies (as a noob I also had to learn the hard way that you do not bring your first meta alloys to Deciat in Open Mode)

I don't think I'd find them OK if done in my ship. Either would be a Block.
That's fair enough and certainly understandable. However such things have happened and it's not ended up with a ban.

That's what we need to know. There needs to be a clear line between acceptable and unacceptable behaviour if you want to hold players to account.

This still assumes that any action was for what happened in game, not anything said over comms or discord that shouldn't have been.

That would be a bad idea imho - unless someone comes out and plainly states he was banned for this affair, and even then it wouldn't be discussed in public.

Best to let it blow over and let it add to the mystique of the ED universe - which they seem to be doing with the Galnet article which was by Elite standards a lightning speed in-game reaction to player actions.

That alone leads me to suspect there was indeed a small fuss behind the scene ;)

Should have gone with a lore approach I think.
Something like :- The Pilots Federation fine them the amount they gained plus extra for damages caused.
Remove all ranks and access to any ships that need rank.
Stuff like that.

Would be funny if they now were in the red and owed the pilots fed billions :)
Loosing ships on rebuy because they cant pay the rebuy etc :)

Why?
Elite about blazing your own trail in a dangerous galaxy or should we now do away with that. It interesting that they dont fix the bugs, servers, and if this was against the rules then why dont we see some consistency and deal with these combat loggers.
